Winter Plain theme for Netvibes

We are happy to introduce a new default theme for Netvibes, named “Winter Plain”. It has been designed to bring you a nicer and more readable interface and let you feel more comfortable with your own page.

Winter Plain

From now, it will become the default theme for new users but it will also be available to all Netvibers in the theme section of the “Settings” panel. If you want to enjoy it right now, you can also use the following link:

Argh! I’ve been here for ages but my netvibes just switched to that without warning!

  2. #2 | Luke | December 15th, 2006 at 11:38

Can’t read the tabs very well.
Please make more like the Halloween theme instead of all those light ones.
For now I’m sticking with the Halloween theme.

  3. #3 | effisk | December 15th, 2006 at 11:45

That was quite a surprise this morning. All this blue…
not sure I like it though.

So if I understand well, I can revert to the old theme in my settings.

  4. #4 | Calico182 | December 15th, 2006 at 11:45

Very nice. How about a Summer theme for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere :)

PS – agreed about the tabs being hard to read – the text and background colours of the tabs are very similiar

  5. #5 | AnA-l | December 15th, 2006 at 12:09

i don’t care about the tab readability, there’s no text on my tabs ;) only icons (i have 15+tabs, so text make them on 2 lines :/)

Btw, this theme is super cool ! great job !

  6. #6 | Cyloo | December 15th, 2006 at 12:09

I confirm that it’s really hard to read the tabs with this theme. But good idea anyway.

  7. #7 | Maurice | December 15th, 2006 at 12:11

Contrast should be improved now, does it feel better ?

  8. #8 | Tom | December 15th, 2006 at 12:12

I like the theme very much, nice colours although i agree on the tab readability.

  9. #9 | Inbal | December 15th, 2006 at 12:12

Nice to finally be able to choose stronger colours! Shame it means that some of the older colours are gone (where’s my yellow?). I agree about the tabs, it would have been smarter to turn the font to white or the background to a (darker than the current tab) shade of grey.
As to the winter concept – I would love a Winter Naturalistic theme to compliment the Plain theme, with more wintery shades of blue and grey, black and white, or to see these qualities integrated. I think it would satisfy the dark themes lovers, especially considering the fact that it’s the dark season.

This new theme is too ’shouty’ for my taste. By all means leave it as an option, but I think newcomers might find it a bit offputting, in an XP default theme kind of way. Just tried them all again, and the classic is still probably the best.

  11. #11 | Maurice | December 15th, 2006 at 12:46

Following popular demand, we have updated the tabs so the text is white on blue:

    Plain tabs

  12. #12 | Turbo | December 15th, 2006 at 13:20

Not bad, but there’s a couple of things…
Gradients in box titles should be avoided. Also I don’t like the the purple colour of the numbers (number of non-read items).

  13. #13 | Sebastian | December 15th, 2006 at 13:20

    Hey, that’s PERFECT!!

I liked the old Netvibes-design, but it was just "good" (better than Google and the others, though).

But this one is making my Netvibes-experience MUCH better!

    Perfectly done, dudes.

  14. #14 | Snakey | December 15th, 2006 at 13:24

Yay, I like this one, it’s nice and bright! I don’t really like dark themes.

  15. #15 | Matt | December 15th, 2006 at 13:37

That’s a nice theme; I wish you guys would add some more in, though. For some reason, I like lime green and dary grey these days…

Keep up the awesome work over there!

  16. #16 | mestdagh | December 15th, 2006 at 13:45

Excellent job! Good choice on the new colors also. I was tired of the WASHED OUT colors. I was using halloween. I switch to this for awhile. Thanks much!

  17. #17 | AnA-l | December 15th, 2006 at 14:40

    Maurice> It’s better, thanks :)

  18. #18 | Ted | December 15th, 2006 at 14:58

    NetVibes copying PageFlakes.com!

Never would have expected that. This new themes looks remarkably similar to the PageFlakes.com redesign.

  19. #19 | alex | December 15th, 2006 at 15:28

The best theme i’ve seen :)

  20. #20 | Mattb | December 15th, 2006 at 17:06

Tried it out. Like the Halloween theme better because it has better contrast between the different feeds. I agree with comment # 2- please make more themes with a darker background, or allow option for users to adjust background color. Thanks.

  21. #21 | Régis Freyd | December 15th, 2006 at 17:28

    Nice :-)
    Well done, Maurice (Svay ??)

  22. #22 | Régis Freyd | December 15th, 2006 at 17:32

Btw, I’m really impressed by the fact that you guys from Netvibes reply that quick to our requests (I’ve read in the comments that you’ve already made modifications to the theme).
Good work, Netvibes Team, and very good communication too :-)

  23. #23 | Rich G. | December 15th, 2006 at 18:08

    Thank you! More themes!!!
Customization of the interface is a HUGE deal to me.

Nobody does ajax ugly on purpose (OK, del.ico.us does).

  24. #24 | JOJOFACE | December 15th, 2006 at 19:24

Eh. It’s okay. I don’t think it should be the default though. It’s not as pretty as Tonic Blue.

  25. #25 | deol | December 15th, 2006 at 20:19

Wow! I know you can’t ever please everyone when it comes to themes but I absolutely love this one. You guys are great, keep it up!

  26. #26 | BbC | December 15th, 2006 at 22:31

Wow, what a beautiful and pleasant theme! It’s the best I have tried on Netvibes. Go on :)

  27. #27 | jake | December 16th, 2006 at 00:44

I like the increased contrast, but i am not a fan of this blue and the new fonts. First, the whole thing now has a very Windows-y feel. That’s not a positive thing… The bold font for the tabs and the names of my modules is very hard to read as it is not crisp. I will be switching back to the original theme.

You’re on the right track with this, but it’s not quite there.

  28. #28 | Woody Gilk | December 16th, 2006 at 01:17

Your best theme yet… If the "content area" (white area "behind" the boxes) was just a gray color, or had a pattern, or… something, it would be perfect.

  29. #29 | Amy | December 16th, 2006 at 01:28

What a pleasant change! I really like that high contrast.

I can’t believe how demanding and whiny your users seem to be, though.

  30. #30 | Adam | December 16th, 2006 at 04:38

I love it. Contrast is king.

  31. #31 | simpleblob | December 16th, 2006 at 11:14

Love this one, but the old default — "light blue" — is the best for me.

  32. #32 | Opo | December 16th, 2006 at 12:18

    Hi,

What is the reason we can not customize ourself our Netvibes page ?
At least with choice of colours?
I like green, you like blue, charles wants yellow…

Is it a server loading problem?
or a too much data to be recorded?

    Opo

  33. #33 | tariq KRIM | December 16th, 2006 at 12:32

we are working on it, fully customzing is quite tricky but we should let you do some customization too, watch out for the next theme to come, you’ll see some surprises

  34. #34 | Jean | December 16th, 2006 at 12:56

Yesss… we want a module ton skin netvibes ourself!!!!

  35. #35 | Jez | December 16th, 2006 at 14:08

I love this theme! It’s a nice change from the light blue one I’ve been using from the start. Nice contrast brings out the modules.

  36. #36 | Dyon | December 16th, 2006 at 19:46

    This is great!
    I really love this!

  37. #37 | grawity | December 16th, 2006 at 20:05

    Best. Theme. Ever.

  38. #38 | kebe | December 16th, 2006 at 20:38

I would change "Add content" sidebar. The rest is great.

  39. #39 | Robert | December 17th, 2006 at 00:28

Even though it is summer here in New Zealand, I love it! My page seems to have more soul now, and is much less wishy-washy.

I don’t usually like new designs straight away, but this is an exception.

  40. #40 | Ellen | December 17th, 2006 at 03:45

Thanks for a great theme. I like the bright colors better than the muted tones. Can’t wait for spring though :)

  41. #41 | neokilly | December 17th, 2006 at 11:56

And what about a whole customizable theme like drupal 5’s new one, named Garland?

They added a color picker built in javascript that allows people to change the design in live!

    See drupal.org/node/91964 for a screenshot

    Good chance for the future!

  42. #42 | steve-o | December 17th, 2006 at 19:28

    looks great. thanks for this…

  43. #43 | Opo | December 18th, 2006 at 15:55

    Hey,
why have you deleted my Hallowin theme with out asking me?
    I prefer darker backgrounds!

  44. #44 | Woland783 | December 18th, 2006 at 16:41

    I like it but i think it’s too… heavy

  45. #45 | Samy | December 18th, 2006 at 19:07

Opo> This theme was intented to be the new default one for new users, but not changing anything for existing users. We have fixed this shortly after. Sorry for the inconvenience. Of course you can still change your theme anytime via the settings panel.

  46. #46 | Sean | December 19th, 2006 at 06:24

Please make more dark themes like the Halloween theme. I’ve been using it since Halloween because it’s much easier on my eyes. Thanks!

  47. #47 | maYO | December 19th, 2006 at 08:24

Good work. It’s really a big improvement as it gives the site a whole lot of structure, just through the use of stronger colours.

  48. #48 | Thomas SOUDAZ | December 24th, 2006 at 13:47

Les bouttons du player de podcast audio ne sont pas complètement raccord avec le skin.

Thomas> yes we know… the podcast player is yet not skinable. We will work on this.

The UWA widgets are supported on the Iphone, but it’s a particular platform and for example there is some issues with iframes and Flash is not supported.

UWA widgets are rendered through an iframe (like in Netvibes) but the ugly scrollbars that you can see on your regular browser will be nicely handled automatically by the Iphone browser.

You can’t edit preferences yet (it’s read only).

when I read an actual feed item – I want to be able to go back to ‘all tabs’ – so it’s simply adding a link to m.netvibes.com/tabs on all pages – both at the top and the bottom of each page
