Widgets update: weather, to-do lists and a new calculator

To start this year, we’ve put our focus on widgets by updating our Essential Widgets and introducing a new one.

The first to get a facelift is the weather widget. Now, it provides a 4-day forecast, displays gorgeous realistic icons and shows the current date (and the local time as an option). You can also change the background by picking a color in the widget palette. We wanted to add an option to have a sunny weather every day, but our developers couldn’t find any API to do it ;)

UPDATE : We’ve heard you guys. There are now 3 display modes. Pick the one you prefer in the widget settings.

Netvibes Weather Widget

The second widget we’ve updated is the to-do list. We’ve added two features to make you more productive:

  • you can color each individual task. This will help for categorizing or prioritizing the things you have to do.
  • by popular demand, you can now drag and drop a task from one list to another. Check out the video to see how it works.

Finally, we are introducing a new widget: a calculator. We know that there are already plenty in the Ecosystem, we wanted to do it our way. This widget works just like regular calculators for simple operations. Press the buttons to enter your operations. When the display is on (which means the widget has the focus), you can even use your keyboard to type faster. And like the weather widget, the color can be changed to read, pink, orange, green, blue or black.

We hope that this update will help you do more with Netvibes than before. More updates will come soon, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, tell us what you think.

The new weather widget is too big. I like the images, but make it all a bit smaller. Maybe put the date and temperature to the left, then a small weather image, and the three day forecast to the right, all in one row.

  2. #2 | Jacopo Gio | January 21st, 2009 at 17:55

Maurice, the weather widget is way too big !! I do not need it on 4 columns! Thanks to give a "reduced version" option. ;-)

  3. #3 | Enrique | January 21st, 2009 at 18:00

I love the new todolists. Awesome.
The weather widget is a way big but it fits on my screen (even on 4 columns)

    Congrats guys. Keep it up!

  4. #4 | Jacopo Gio | January 21st, 2009 at 18:01

    part2,
with FF3 and XP the Weather widget is showing 4 days in a row and there is no way to change the background colour.

check here the capture : img172.imageshack.us/my.p…

  5. #5 | Netvibes | January 21st, 2009 at 18:12

@Jacopo Try to clear your cache first maybe

  6. #6 | Milan | January 21st, 2009 at 18:16

Please make the weather widget smaller.

  7. #7 | Erica | January 21st, 2009 at 18:43

The new weather widget is way too big. Definitely needs to be an option for a condensed version. With the TO DO widget, only thing I would add is the ability to move/re-order tasks but other than that, I like it. Calculator widget…nice job.

  8. #8 | Dave | January 21st, 2009 at 18:46

So where does one find the new calculator? I don’t see it under "Essentials", and trying to find it using a search for "calculator" is fruitless since there are so many matches. Someone have a link to it?

  9. #9 | Bertrand | January 21st, 2009 at 18:51

    Hi,

I am not sure to understand how to get the new todo widget. If I go to Essential Widget, it’s still the old one. (I can’t change the color of the items.)

  10. #10 | Dave | January 21st, 2009 at 18:53

Bertrand- clear your browser’s cache and refresh the page. Worked for me.

  11. #11 | Maurice | January 21st, 2009 at 18:54

Dave, Bertrand: try to empty your browser cache then try again.

  12. #12 | JohnWW | January 21st, 2009 at 18:56

You guys are the best! I tried iGoogle for a week but man, Netvibes is definitely much better.
    Keep up the great job.

  13. #13 | Bertrand | January 21st, 2009 at 19:00

Answer to myself : I changed my settings to show actions as text and it worked, even when I switched back to ‘icon-actions’. I guess this is due to my reloading of the page…

  14. #14 | WHY | January 21st, 2009 at 19:10

Ahhhh the weather widget is too big! Please make it smaller, or I’ll have to write one of my own! And that’s not cool! It would be nice if it were at most the same size as the last one, or maybe even smaller would be better!! The graphics are nice, but honestly, text is even better for the literate people among us!

  15. #15 | Old Weather Widget Fan | January 21st, 2009 at 19:20

Can we please have the option of re-adding the previous weather widget?

  16. #16 | fjpoblam | January 21st, 2009 at 19:20

Keep up the good work, folks! Yer grrreeeaat! (Now, just concentrate on blowing away iGoogle’s load time…)

  17. #17 | Mike | January 21st, 2009 at 19:27

    Gotta shrink the weather widget!!!

  18. #18 | Chris | January 21st, 2009 at 19:29

Of course it is too big. Just like the "Add content" button which they say they will change but i dont see any option to change it

  19. #19 | Mr.doob | January 21st, 2009 at 19:29

    That’s what I’m talking about!

  20. #20 | timeuser | January 21st, 2009 at 19:34

That new weather widget is ridiculously huge. Please make a small version.

  21. #21 | Clay Anderson | January 21st, 2009 at 19:41

Let me add one more request to shrink the weather widget. It’s MUCH too big, and it pushed some important widgets below the fold on my page. I’ll probably hide/delete/find a different weather widget until you provide a different option.

  22. #22 | Claude | January 21st, 2009 at 19:41

The weather widget is too big. Please consider offering the option of bringing back the previous small version.
    Thanks!

  23. #23 | Clay Anderson | January 21st, 2009 at 19:45

(Also — I’m on a 1440×900 monitor with 4 columns on my page, and the copyright lines at the bottom of the weather widget are a bit too wide to fit.)

  24. #24 | Daniel | January 21st, 2009 at 19:51

All this work on previous widgets, which I like, but still, alas, the one thing that keeps me from switching, a sports scores widget in the Netvibes style.

    Yawn.

  25. #25 | Jak | January 21st, 2009 at 19:56

Love the colours of the weather widget, but please, please make it smaller. Same size as the old one would be wonderful.

    Cheers

  26. #26 | fac51 | January 21st, 2009 at 20:03

Weather widget is bloody awful – too big and can’t pick a matching colour to my page – at least give us an option for the old one. Now archived.

  27. #27 | Debbie | January 21st, 2009 at 20:08

Mark me in the "weather widget is way too big." column!

  28. #28 | Webbster | January 21st, 2009 at 20:11

I hate it. Too big. Removed it from my page and found something else.

Another vote for the too big make it smaller.

  29. #29 | Robster | January 21st, 2009 at 20:13

I like the new widgets, great work!
Even the weather widget. I dont think its too big. Change the number of columns then it fits into size.

  30. #30 | mat | January 21st, 2009 at 20:24

the new weather is WAY TOO BIG! i was actually looking for a smaller one. it would be great to put several cities in the same widget to save space. one city below the other. 3 day forecast in one line.
it’s actually quite incredible that none of the weather widgets work. have you tried accuweather, weather channel, etc? all crap. what gives?
    thanks

  31. #31 | RM | January 21st, 2009 at 20:25

Weather widget is perfect for my page. I use 3 columns and it fits nicely in one.

  32. #32 | jordiv | January 21st, 2009 at 20:34

The weather widget is too big, I don’t like it.

  33. #33 | Laurie | January 21st, 2009 at 20:39

Brilliant, you took my two nice small concise weather widgets and made them take up half the page.

    Size option please!

  34. #34 | matt | January 21st, 2009 at 20:41

agreed…. weather is far too big now. please make the text size adjustable.

  35. #35 | Javier | January 21st, 2009 at 20:42

Aaaarg, all my to-do lists are empty!! I have lost my tasks!!

  36. #36 | bob sacamano | January 21st, 2009 at 20:43

i concur that weather is WAY too big.. also could use some additional info if it’s going to be that big, perhaps humidity or things of that nature.

  37. #37 | Asiji | January 21st, 2009 at 20:46

While I’ll second that the weather is too big, more importantly:

***ALL of my to-dos are gone!!***

They are now empty widgets with the correct titles, but each widget is completely empty. I tried the whole log-out, clear cache, log back in, and this did not help. (And hopefully did not get rid of my last chance to recover that data!!)

  38. #38 | Graeme | January 21st, 2009 at 20:58

The weather widget is too big now, but more importantly, it always shows the wrong temperatures for my city (Melbourne, Australia). Always! wrong! example: it’s currently 26.5 degrees C, but the widget says it’s 19. Forecast temp today is 34 degrees, but the widget says 31. I can’t understand why it doesn’t work, but it’s good for a laugh every day.

  39. #39 | Mogu | January 21st, 2009 at 21:09

Update for the todo-lists: VERY NICE!

  40. #40 | Javier | January 21st, 2009 at 21:15

    Yes; nice and blank :(

  41. #41 | jon | January 21st, 2009 at 21:18

my to-do lists are empty too. what happened?

  42. #42 | dm60462 | January 21st, 2009 at 21:25

WX widget too big. Can’t change the color. Going back to using the Natl WX Service widgets for now.

  43. #43 | chrissy | January 21st, 2009 at 21:26

Oh, come on guys, the weather widget is now freakin humongous. Please let us choose, I like the old one better. Don’t get me wrong, the new graphics are nice, but it’s taking way too much space on my screen. Judging on posts above, I hope you get the message.

  44. #44 | fatjoez | January 21st, 2009 at 21:26

The new weather widget is great & so is the todo

But as everyone else said, a Size option would be nice

Small Medium Large only a matter of switching the icons/fontsize. Easy

Personally I can live with this current size though

  45. #45 | newshoemedia | January 21st, 2009 at 21:30

I, for one, like the large weather widget – I have a large monitor so the size isn’t a problem at all.

  46. #46 | Marc | January 21st, 2009 at 21:30

I can’t add citys with german umlauts (äüö) to the weather widged.

  47. #47 | Markus | January 21st, 2009 at 21:39

All the items in my todo list have been removed!! Is that intentional or a bug? Is there any way to restore them? I can’t remember all of them!

  48. #48 | alison | January 21st, 2009 at 21:43

My WeatherUnderground widget fits in one column – small, concise, gives me two days of weather at a glance, along with current conditions. After reading about the new one – I’ll stick w/wunderground

  49. #49 | ZZ | January 21st, 2009 at 21:49

I think the whether widget is WAY too big. Allow us to reduce the size or create a second, compact widget with the same functionality.

  50. #50 | SHADOW-XIII | January 21st, 2009 at 22:02

good changes, but weather widget is waaay to big, should get options to show X days (like today only, or future forecast).
What’s more a bit annoying in Weather widget is that it colorize itself depending on block/titlebar color which looks very bad comparing to all other widgets on website.

  51. #51 | Clemens | January 21st, 2009 at 22:05

Wow a calculator. What a really useless thing. This is something programmers do to learn a new language. Not that every OS has one that’s faster to use and accessible anyway.

How about focussing on more important stuff like bringing back functionality to the still existing but not working EBAY WIDGET?

Love the drag and drop on the to-do list though.
A garbage bin to drop items off would be nice to complete the workflow of drag+drop.
The option to colorize seems not to be localized (it’s always in english).

  52. #52 | Guillaume Weill | January 21st, 2009 at 22:08

La mise à jour du widget liste de tâche a effacé toutes mes tâches. Y a-t-il des possibilités pour retrouver ces tâches à partir de sauvegardes précédentes ?

  53. #53 | iix | January 21st, 2009 at 22:13

Love the new weather module. The size is fine for me. Thank you, thank you!

  54. #54 | RS | January 21st, 2009 at 22:17

In case you didn’t get the idea from the previous 50 comments about the weather widget, here it is again:

    IT’S TOO BIG!

I like the smaller widget of the past. Remember, function over form.

  55. #55 | lennox | January 21st, 2009 at 22:25

Please gimme a smaller one… I do like the graphics, but it’s way to big now…

    Thank you in advance…

  56. #56 | Mattybee | January 21st, 2009 at 22:29

I have also lost all my existing ‘to-do’s’. Please tell me they can be recovered or I might be a little cross.

I like the fact that you guys aim to continually improve your offering, but at the expense of losing a user’s existing information is not a good way to keep friends :)

  57. #57 | zeto | January 21st, 2009 at 22:29

The new weather widget is too big. I like the images, but make it all a bit smaller.

And i lost one of my webnotes.

  58. #58 | Lisa | January 21st, 2009 at 22:30

Nthing that the weather widget is now way too big. I have two locations I need to keep an eye on, and now have two of these huge things screaming the date at me and pushing other widgets down below the fold on my carefully-laid out page.

I agree with Bob Sacamano, if it must be that big, put humidity on it or something. But I can see the date in about five other places on my screen!

Most of the time, when I look at a weather widget, I do it to check the forecast, not the current conditions. The old version made it much easier to see the forecast at a glance.

I’m actually not a fan of the weather graphics, either. They look good, but they’re not that practical – every time I see a site that uses that style, I spend a lot of time trying to figure out if those lovely transparenty clouds have rain coming out of the bottom of them or not – especially on a netbook screen!

The old compact version was much better, and I always preferred it to iGoogle’s weather. Please bring it back as another option!

(For now, it’s time to hit Archive and go digging for another one.)

  59. #59 | ponche | January 21st, 2009 at 22:35

SMALL WEATHER WIDGET OPTION PLEASE !!!!

  60. #60 | George | January 21st, 2009 at 22:35

The weather widget is too large.

  61. #61 | rhythmrebel | January 21st, 2009 at 22:36

You guys probably need to refresh, or delete and put back the weather widget. It’s perfectly sized for my netvibes page, taking up only one column.

    i44.tinypic.com/6rlesj.jp…

  62. #62 | Chris | January 21st, 2009 at 22:40

    Thanks, good job, keep going.

  63. #63 | Ralf | January 21st, 2009 at 22:52

Is there any way to get the old weather widget back?

  64. #64 | SG | January 21st, 2009 at 23:18

Nice changes..but way too big…takes up precious screen real estate unnecessarily..

  65. #65 | Chris | January 21st, 2009 at 23:22

The weather widget is way too large, the icons are massive! The colours are too dark as well. Totally breaks up the visual style of my current page theme. I can’t seem to get the white version you are showing in this post either. Its transparent for me not white??

You seem to roll these changes out without getting a consensus from your users first. Please at least take on board the 40 odd comments here saying this new thing its too big.

  66. #66 | M | January 21st, 2009 at 23:24

    Nice work guys!

  67. #67 | Jon | January 21st, 2009 at 23:33

Sorry I have to agree with the others. While the new weather icons are nice, the widget is way too big. I was looking through the options in hope that there was an option to shrink it somehow.

  68. #68 | Randy Rhythm | January 21st, 2009 at 23:38

I think I’m the only one that likes the size of the weather widget. But I’m a weather geek, so I am biased.

  69. #69 | Mark | January 21st, 2009 at 23:55

Please give me back my to-do data! I don’t know what to do right now…
Although the changes are improvements, you might consider to keep old widgets and make the new ones available to add, instead of this brute update?

  70. #70 | R. | January 21st, 2009 at 23:59

Nice try, but I lost all my to-do content. Looking into the reactions, I am not the only one.
Errors like this one will make me looking after a provider who takes "content" more serious than looks.

  71. #71 | fuzzymuffins | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:01

add one more "weather app is too big" vote.

  72. #72 | Tamara | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:06

I like the graphics on the weather widget but I don’t like that it takes up twice the space that it used to… please provide us with the option to have a condensed version of it!

  73. #73 | Arnold | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:09

Another request to have a single row version of the weather widget. I have 3 weather widgets stacked on a page. I used to be able to see all 3 reports without scrolling. Now I cannot.

  74. #74 | ToddE | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:10

Please fix the to do bug and/or post how we can fix it!!!!!!

  75. #75 | retrogard | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:12

I loved the old widgets – simpe, small and accurate.

Please let them live and us to choose if we desire the new ones or want to stick to the old ones.

    Please!

  76. #76 | ac | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:14

DAMN! the weather widget is sick!!! don’t listen to these morons, the weather widget is a million times better than the old one.

  77. #77 | evan | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:16

all of these upgrades are very cool. i personally don’t mind the size of the weather widget, it’s a lot easier to read now.

  78. #78 | Susan Reid | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:18

All my to-dos are gone! And the weather widget is way too huge. Have cleared cache but no use.

Love your site and it is extremely useful to me, but you are fixing things that weren’t broke!

  79. #79 | gunnar | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:35

I think all of the essential widgets need to be as cool looking as the weather widget

  80. #80 | clay | January 22nd, 2009 at 00:44

@rhythmrebel: Um, the problem isn’t the width, it’s the height. Of course it only takes up one column. But it’s so tall, it pushes two entire feeds below the fold on my page. Those of us who are complaining want it to be shorter.

@ac: Seriously, do you have to be rude and offensive? (Heck, do you even realize you are rude and offensive?)

  81. #81 | me | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:03

it’s too big. get rid of the entire upper half — that adds not value

  82. #82 | Dynotaku | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:03

One thing I like about Netvibes is how compact it is. I have pages of to do lists and now all my to do lists are 50% taller than they were. I partially fixed it by making a customized stylish script (Firefox plugin) but I’d really like to see a minimized version of this. The functionality is great but I’m a minimalist. And the weather thing is huge too. Yes it’s pretty but if it’s so big that it’s ‘below the fold’ I may as well not use it.

  83. #83 | Chris | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:13

Please make the weather widget take up less vertical space! I like everything above the fold and now it’s pushing stuff below the fold.

I don’t get why Netvibes makes these changes without asking first.

  84. #84 | Mariano | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:26

The result after the demo video of the calculator is 1337, as in l33t speech ;)
Nerds behind Netvibes? Or coincidence at work?

  85. #85 | Chris M. | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:38

The weather widget graphics are nice and everything, but it’s too big. Specifically, it’s too tall. The old one was small, compact, and useful.

I’m going to have to archive this thing until it gets fixed…

  86. #86 | JIe | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:47

The weather widget is extremely too big and looked quite ugly in my Eepc!

  87. #87 | JLM | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:55

Please add me to the list of those wanting a smaller weather widget. It was fine before.

  88. #88 | mw | January 22nd, 2009 at 01:59

and the giant ugly green button is gone!

  89. #89 | rhythmrebel | January 22nd, 2009 at 02:38

@clay: Some people are reporting that it is taking up the width of 3 columns, I was just offering to help fix the issue.

  90. #90 | me | January 22nd, 2009 at 03:10

just in case you haven’t heard……..
The weather widget is waaaaay too big!!!!!!

  91. #91 | Mike | January 22nd, 2009 at 03:13

One more vote for that the new weather widget is nice but too big.

  92. #92 | Dave | January 22nd, 2009 at 03:14

New weather is way too distracting.. Everything is laid out poorly and needs more negative space. Scale the icons and text down a bit.

  93. #93 | Mike | January 22nd, 2009 at 03:19

Also, I compared Netvibes temps to temps from The Weather Channel and they never seem to match.

  94. #94 | JohnT | January 22nd, 2009 at 03:48

Yes, the hight of the new weather widget is too high…another vote for a smaller version or hight option.

  95. #95 | nkls | January 22nd, 2009 at 04:10

Aren’t the red and purple color of the weather widget mixed up?
Also, 1+ for smaller weather widget!

  96. #96 | MSO | January 22nd, 2009 at 04:50

When you switched to the new list widget, it blew away everything that I had stored in the old list widgets. It’s just not there anymore. I had 6 lists with dozens of items – like phone numbers – stored in those lists. Who thought it would be a good idea to update the widget by blowing away all of the info in the old ones? I use Netvibes every day to organize my stuff. How could you just blow my information away? Really bad move.

  97. #97 | MSO | January 22nd, 2009 at 05:03

UPDATE to Previous Post: I am spitting mad about this. Those lists were important to me. I can’t just recover that data. I had no way to back it up. I guess that’s my bad. If you knew that it was going to blow away data, wouldn’t it occur to someone to put out a heads-up notice. Or make a provision for transferring the data? How can I continue to use Netvibes for organization now that I know that the next time I sign in, my info might be gone? Why invest the time to try to recreate it. Free site that makes no warranties – you can do what you like. It has been so convenient – until now. Can you tell, I’m angry? This sucks.

  98. #98 | JT | January 22nd, 2009 at 05:04

I like the changes to the To Do List widget as I rely heavily on that widget to help me organize my tasks at work. Which brings me to my point…WHY DID YOU ERASE ALL OF MY TO DOs!!!!!!!!!! What were you thinking? Do you expect me to trust that widget any longer if everytime you make a change to it you are going to erase all of my tasks? I have seven instances of that widget running on my page, one each for the major categories of tasks I do at work, and then I have many to do’s in each one. NOW THEY ARE ALL GONE!!!!!

  99. #99 | AS | January 22nd, 2009 at 05:23

My To Do lists are empty as well. How do we fix that?

  100. #100 | BRL | January 22nd, 2009 at 06:06

Somebody above side the ugly green button is gone. It’s still there for me.

We were told ages ago that we’d soon have the option of a more muted button. I’m still waiting … because that button really is ugly.

  101. #101 | Ross Martin | January 22nd, 2009 at 06:08

The weather widget is too big and shows less information than before.

  102. #102 | moogle | January 22nd, 2009 at 07:01

    All my tasks are gone!
I am a physician and these widgets (I had six of them) contained important patient data!
Now I will loose my job!

  103. #103 | gaelle muller | January 22nd, 2009 at 07:37

franchement monstrueux le gadget meteo, ça gache complétement l’amelioration graphique…;quelle drôle d’idée! je vais immediatement en chercher un autre (en plus weather channel sur l’europe, sont pas tres bons)

  104. #104 | kai | January 22nd, 2009 at 07:48

    about the TODO list
    1. i find it strange the lists are in grey font color but crossed out ones are in black. seems backwards
    2. the little edit pencil is useless and takes up space right next to the title that when clicked also edits the title. i vote to remove it, it’s too much clutter when clicking the title is already intuitive.

the lists are taller now but i guess it takes some getting used to. i guess some people like more space, i like to cram as much as possible in a small space. that’s why netvibes > all other start pages.

but awesome job on being able to drag n drop tasks. that made my day, keep up the good work

  105. #105 | Graham Jones | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:17

As many other people have said – the weather widget is way too big. I have three different towns (places I visit regularly – often on the same day) and they take up far too much space now. Bring back the old widget…!

  106. #106 | Lalalalalala | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:18

I did a quick mock-up of how I’d like the weather widget to be:

    i42.tinypic.com/19lgch.pn…

Also please take a look at the one of Protopage.com. It’s smaller than your current one, yet also features lots more information like humidity, wind and UV.

  107. #107 | Roy | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:23

As many other people have said – the weather widget is way too big.

  108. #108 | DJO | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:28

i agree that the weather widget should be smaller.

together with that i would love seeing an option of defining how many days you would like to see in the forecast (one is enough for me).

  109. #109 | Mafeu | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:31

    1) I like the new weather icons, but they are really big, so one more vote for downsizing the icons.

    2) Please, make the date display configurable. I know which day we have and don’t need to have it written across the icons in superlarge font.

    Otherwise, niche job!

  110. #110 | Netvibes | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:31

  111. #111 | Dennis | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:44

The new more realistic icons are a depressing sight, huge grey clouds with a lot of rain now dominate my screen. Not a nice way to start your day…. Would have liked and expected the option to keep the old version.

  112. #112 | gergo | January 22nd, 2009 at 08:53

The weather widget is not only too big, it also looks terrible!
Please put a checkbox into the "Edit" panel if the user wants to see the old or the new version.
I will definitely pick the old one.
    Thanks

  113. #113 | Jacopo Gio | January 22nd, 2009 at 09:07

Weather widget now is working like you said, but still is too big in height. Anyway to reduce it at least of half size ? Smzller icons ?

    Coulours are nice !

  114. #114 | Nono | January 22nd, 2009 at 09:11

The wather widget is annoying. Pleased!

  115. #115 | divydovy | January 22nd, 2009 at 09:38

The calculator widget is (now?) found under Essentials.

  116. #116 | Pella | January 22nd, 2009 at 10:00

Both the weather and the To Do widgets are way to big now. I have several To Do lists and for maximum usability (for me) I want all my stuff on ONE page – RSS’s, To Do lists etc. Anything on page 2 are inessential to me and won’t be noticed.
I think I’ll have to skip the weather widget.

Please add the possibility to show ‘reduced size’ versions of these 2 widgets!

  117. #117 | Dan Grossman | January 22nd, 2009 at 10:19

I’d also like to see a smaller weather widget. It takes up a lot of vertical real-estate on my main page, where the old one didn’t.

  118. #118 | Sorin | January 22nd, 2009 at 10:39

My tasks are gone too. Although creating a new one I got the title: New Todo #23, so it knew I had 22 before.

Oh, and, of course, THE WEATHER WIDGET SUCKS :p

Oh well, since those two were the only real widgets I was using (plus the box.net one, but that is kind of buggy and I don’t really use it that often), I might as well move to some plain RSS reader + the tasks in gmail + weather.com / other local weather site.

Got any recommendations for the RSS reader? :D The obvious choice seems google reader.

  119. #119 | Andreas | January 22nd, 2009 at 10:41

    hi!
the new todo-list widget has DELETED ALL my entries! what a great new feature..

  120. #120 | James | January 22nd, 2009 at 10:43

I have lost my to do items as well and I agree with everyone who preferred the old weather widget. I ahve dropped it in favour of the BBC RSS feed but would still like one with (small) icons. Also I totally agree with whoever said the beauty of Netvibes is its compactness – please don’t bloat it.

  121. #121 | Netvibes | January 22nd, 2009 at 10:55

Sorin, Andreas: could you send an e-mail with the feedback form: http://www.netvibes.com/static.p... ? It will help us investigate your problem.

  122. #122 | Jean fabre | January 22nd, 2009 at 11:46

    Weather is too big

You keep adding stuff and making modifications against common sense, AT least make the move nicely and always propose an option to let it how it was before or about the same size.

suggestion: instead of forcing us to adopt something we might not want: build a system that gently tells us that something new is there and the option to turn it on or not. Here you go less unhappy users. LET US IN CONTROL, THAT’S WHY WE USE NETVIBES IN THE FIRST PLACE: DON’T TAKE THAT OFF US NOW….

Making update for the sake of it without the need to is a sympton that something is not going ok with netvibes: you don’t fool people so easily. If you feel the pressure of concurrent; think about what makes netvibes so attractive instead of manking things bigger… is it to compensate something? really I wonder

  123. #123 | Chris | January 22nd, 2009 at 12:21

Nah they will let as forget how big it is just like the big green "Add content" button

  124. #124 | Fernando | January 22nd, 2009 at 13:46

I don’t like the new weather widget. Can I use the old one?

  125. #125 | Warren | January 22nd, 2009 at 13:58

Agree with most here–the weather widget is way too big. Takes up a third of the vertical page. Please reduce in size.

  126. #126 | Miki8 | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:18

    Too big!

  127. #127 | Craig | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:19

Sorry, I have to jump on the "weather widget is too big" bandwagon. I liked the old one better with the smaller size.

  128. #128 | jeff | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:31

Way too big. And why doesn’t the weather show current temperature? All I get is the high and the low. I want to know what it is outside now. It just doesn’t look good anymore.

  129. #129 | Bart | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:38

I miss the local time in the tittle bar. I had all the places around the world I have contact with to quickly remind me what the local time was. (all minimized on my page) and then I could expand if I wanted to see weather details.

What about adding a parameter to give the user an option to show large or small images and with or without time…

I know I should just be happy its free but clearly not everybody is happy with your improvement surprises. Perhaps it is better to release a "what do you guys think / give us feed back bata version" before we are "upgraded"

Anyway still love netvibes and happy to see new things. It is becoming more difficult however to convince friends to use netvibes as iGoogle also is making very interesting updates. Those that use Gmail / chat reader like what they have done on iGoogle to support those integrations. (can you copy a TAB like that with side menus?) … keep an eye on these guys are gaining ground…

  130. #130 | Nate | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:45

The weather widget needs an option for a smaller version (maybe smaller icons?). If it doesn’t shrink, I’ll probably have to get rid of it.

  131. #131 | John | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:50

Add me in for the "Weather widget is too big" crowd – can we get the old one back as an option? For now, I’m just going to use the feed from Weather Underground

  132. #132 | 0mark | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:56

I like the weather widget background. Would be cool if other widgets (calendar, todo, notes, …) could have it too.

  133. #133 | chris | January 22nd, 2009 at 15:57

i can’t rearrange my to do list like I used to. Every item is fixed in place. the odd one I could move any item. any chance to bring back that feature? or am I jsut too stupid to figure out how to move an item?

  134. #134 | AJ | January 22nd, 2009 at 16:27

Weather widget is so big i have temp removed it. make it smaller. Are you guys designing with your eyes shut. Pretty basic mistake

  135. #135 | Haydur | January 22nd, 2009 at 16:31

The problem with the Weather Widget is that you are forcing those humongous font sizes on us. It should be the same font-family and font-size as all the other widgets. I like the new graphics and the background gradients, but please make the text smaller. Then, perhaps you can even include other stuff, like the wind chill factor.

  136. #136 | dale | January 22nd, 2009 at 16:36

Weather widget is a MASSIVE back step. bad move guys. do you even ask your users what they want, or ever user test something before release. Maybe add a test widget section where users can try out a replacement widget before you storm in and make elementary mistakes. I’ve removed the widget for now but hope to have it back when you create a much smaller version.

  137. #137 | JT | January 22nd, 2009 at 16:57

Whew!!!!!! To Do’s are back. Sorry for the meltdown earlier.

I don’t hate the new weather widget as most seem to. I like the colors, etc. However, I did like the old one better. Nice and tight with more days on it. The new one is nicer looking but it’s much larger and has fewer days forecasted (go figure.) My vote would be to maybe take the old one and spice it up a little.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s just my suggestion. I don’t care that much one way or the other as long as I get the weather. I’m surprised by how passionate some people are about their weather widgets. :)

  138. #138 | Kenny | January 22nd, 2009 at 16:57

I like the look of the new weather widget, but I prefer the compact size of the older version. Please put the old version back and make the new version a new widget on the ecosystem.

  139. #139 | Nicholas Overstreet | January 22nd, 2009 at 17:06

The new weather widget is awful.
It’s way way way too big.
I use netvibes because of it’s clean sleek look.
You’re killing my reason for using it by introducing this monstrosity of a widget. Maybe I should just call you guys iGoogle? Switching end user’s layouts with no warning or no way to revert… seems like I left iGoogle when they did that…

  140. #140 | JT | January 22nd, 2009 at 17:11

Sorry, this is my last post, I promise…

Now that my to do’s are back and I’m playing with the widget, I really like the new To Do widget. The ability to drag and move them around to change the order and move them from list to list is really a plus. I hated the immobility of them in the old widget. Being able to change the color is a huge step forward. While I realize the old widget was intended to be simple it was too simple.

Suggestions for futre releases: It would be great to be able to prioritize them. I know you can use colors but it would be nice to be able to designate "high, med, low" priority or something to that effect in addition to the use of colors. Also, I don’t know how complicated this would be (I’m not a developer) but being able to designate due dates with with perhaps even reminders would be nice as well. It would also be cool to have some options in the sort order such as alphabetically, by priority (if that became a feature), color, due date (if that became a feature) or by completion (where items checked off moved to the bottom), etc…

Anyway, I realize those suggestions would take it from a nice simple widget to something much more complicated but as a heavy user of the To Do List widget that’s my wishlist for it.

Keep up the good work guys (and gals)!!!

  141. #141 | Joel | January 22nd, 2009 at 17:14

Is the new weather widget a joke? Seriously? I should be able to see the weather for 2+ cities in one screen. The new widget takes up half a screen.

  142. #142 | Mitzwinkel | January 22nd, 2009 at 17:58

The calculator does not produce correct results.

    E. G.: 3+4*5 is for the netvibes-Calculator 35.
It should be 23. I guess the program does not order operations correctly. Multiplication does not take precedence over addition.

  143. #143 | Javier | January 22nd, 2009 at 18:59

To-do’s are back and kicking :)

  144. #144 | James | January 22nd, 2009 at 20:43

Seems the coloring works poorly with the ‘Dark Vibes’ theme. Even when picking background color from color palette. As it seems it re-acts poorly to the color the theme has. Minus this drastic eye soar on my dark page the app is ok.

  145. #145 | Shadowhand | January 22nd, 2009 at 21:20

You guys have totally failed me. This omg-awesome new weather widget STINKS! I used to love netvibes for being minimalist and fast, and now it feels like netvibes has become enthralled with Vista and is trying to make "improvements" on something that was already perfected.

From the looks of these comments, you have upset a lot of users. I’ll be going to iGoogle now. Thanks for the fond memories, and best of luck.

  146. #146 | shakti | January 22nd, 2009 at 22:29

PLEASE give us the old weather widget back as a choice.
The new widget looks great, but the layout is not ideal for everyone!

  147. #147 | Garock | January 23rd, 2009 at 00:06

And now Netvibes becomes as bad as iGoogle… it starts with annoyingly large and stupid widget changes… then it goes to ??? C’mon, quit "fixing" what is not broken!!

  148. #148 | bobafred | January 23rd, 2009 at 01:12

yeah, so not going to read all these comments, but would love a condensed option for the weather widget. it’s way too big.

  149. #149 | June A. Yasol | January 23rd, 2009 at 02:10

It’s good to see that Netvibes is attune with the times!

  150. #150 | John Kenney | January 23rd, 2009 at 05:25

+1 on weather widget being too large now.

i used to be able to see weather in several locations within single screen. not possible now.

    looks quite lovely though.

  151. #151 | Martin | January 23rd, 2009 at 06:00

When I saw a big splash about new to-do list features, I expected a whole lot more than just colours and D&D. Still no Priority, still no Category, still no sorting, still no sub-items. Come on, guys, surely you can do better than that?

  152. #152 | MSO | January 23rd, 2009 at 06:27

I was really upset about losing my to-do list data. See posts 96 & 97 in this thread. I wrote <<<How can I continue to use Netvibes for organization now that I know that the next time I sign in, my info might be gone? >>> I was invited via a post (#110) to send the complaint via email through the Netvibes site. This morning, I had an email from Netvibes apologizing for the inconvenience and the email included my to-do list information. It also said that they would restore it. By this afternoon, my to-do’s were restored in the new widgets. It was a very impressive response. I’m not only satisfied with the way this was handled but, candidly, walk away with a new-found respect for the Netvibes team. Thank you for handling it as you did.

  153. #153 | Way too big | January 23rd, 2009 at 07:30

    Yep. Waaaaaaaaaaaay too big

  154. #154 | bob | January 23rd, 2009 at 08:59

Appreciate the much needed calculator and to do list updates.

People have custom designed their pages around the size of the "essential" widgets as originally presented.

In future mods to essential widgets, that can be planned into the new design.

Otherwise, every "improvement" to an existing size will meet with the same reaction as to the weather widget.

I like it. It is better in many ways.

    But it just doesn’t fit.

Not only that, I liked the compact day, date, and time displayed in the collapsed mode. Lot of info in little space. That’s the name of the game.

  155. #155 | Emanuel | January 23rd, 2009 at 10:29

I’d also like to see a smaller weather widget!!
    as a option?

  156. #156 | Maxstormix | January 23rd, 2009 at 13:09

The weather widget (powered by the weather channel) is too big. Reduce to previous version of the same widget. Also, the local time is 30 minutes behind the actual time. Kindly rectify it. Thanks!!

  157. #157 | Anna | January 23rd, 2009 at 16:20

Could you also build a weather widget from a European provider? The weather channel is mostly wrong here in Europe. Eg. news.bbc.co.uk/weather/

  158. #158 | slabounty | January 23rd, 2009 at 17:36

It doesn’t seem like the refresh button works on the weather widget.

  159. #159 | Jak | January 23rd, 2009 at 17:44

Just logged back in and seen the revised size of the weather widget. So came here to say thanks, only to find it now has 3 size options. Excellent news and thank you.

Have to agree with Anna above that the temp reading compared to both the bbc widget right below on my page and the yahoo widget on my desktop are slightly different here in the uk. e.g. today min/max -1/5 according to the widget and the others 2/6 bbc or so far a max of 9 on the yahoo widget (though the yahoo widget does constantly update and show just the current temp not a min/max) and it’s now only showing -1 as the temp which at quarter to 5 in the evening seems a bit early to lose the daytime temp reading as it’s well warmer than -1 outside at the moment.

Would love to be able to use other weather feeds with this widget layout and design for a more accurate local weather (hate to say but yahoo’s seems to be the most accurate for local temp, could be due to it’s regular updating for temp/weather not just min/max expected).

  160. #160 | Netvibes | January 23rd, 2009 at 17:44

We’ve updated the widget to make it smaller. We even added different modes. Thanks for your feedback!

  161. #161 | Chris | January 23rd, 2009 at 17:46

It did not update for me yet. Also update the netvibes activities with the blog posts.

  162. #162 | Jak | January 23rd, 2009 at 17:48

Just to add. Tried the "show time" option and yes it’s correct here in the UK, but please, please remove the seconds from the time so it’s just hh/mm.

    Cheers

Constantly impressed by your continuing updates, changes and that you take note of users views.

  163. #163 | Jak | January 23rd, 2009 at 18:04

    @Chris

Try deleting you browser cache without netvibes open then try netvibes again. Might sort it out.

  164. #164 | Stuart | January 23rd, 2009 at 18:29

Thanks for the ‘compact’ weather widget option.

I switched from iGoogle precisely because their recent unnanounced non-option changes killed the real estate on my eeepc and even made it lok uncomfortable on larger displays.

Success will be by being different to iGoogle and remembering the objective is to get as much info as can be clearly read onto any screen. Oh and being responsive to us awkward folks!

Thanks again and wishing you success.

  165. #165 | fuzzymuffins | January 23rd, 2009 at 18:45

I just want to say thank you very much for the new size fix to the weather widget!

  167. #167 | leo | January 23rd, 2009 at 19:15

thanks for the new weather widget size options!

  168. #168 | Kevin | January 23rd, 2009 at 19:49

Ok, I don’t know what you guys are doing, but the display is seriously messed up. You guys need to fix this and fast! Compact mode WAS working, but now all the items are stacked on top of each other and are unreadable.

And was there any serious thought about this change to start with? Who came up with the idea that "yeah, lets suddenly expand the widget to take up HALF THE BROWSER SCREEN???" C’mon… I know you can do better.

…and yes, I’ve already closed my browser / flushed cache and it still looks horrible.

  169. #169 | Maurice | January 23rd, 2009 at 20:50

Kevin: the only layouts are the ones being shown in the updated screenshot. None of them should have the items stacked on top of each other.

Could you send us an e-mail via the form http://www.netvibes.com/static.p...? Tell that you already tried to empty your browser cache. It will help us debug your problem as soon as possible.

  170. #170 | Benjamin | January 23rd, 2009 at 21:16

Thank you for listening about the weather widget Netvibes!

  175. #175 | Garock | January 24th, 2009 at 04:31

I must say I have to take back what I said… You actually listened to the users… Thank you, I much prefer the new option to make it smaller, it saves space and looks even better than ever! Go Netvibes Team!!

  176. #176 | fatjoez | January 24th, 2009 at 05:26

The font size on the Compact mode of weather widget for Day / Temperatures is about 2sizes too small to be honest and is hard to read

Can you upsize it a bit, there is room..

  177. #177 | Injerto | January 24th, 2009 at 08:05

Thank you VERY MUCH. I didn’t post my opinion about the old-new weather gadget but I agreed it was too big, now I post to thank you for listening to everybody, me included (even though I said nothing ’cause I though it was already said).

    :)

  178. #178 | Freakizoid | January 24th, 2009 at 17:30

I had the stacked text issue, cleared my cache in Firefox and all is perfect now. Suggest you try it for those who haven’t

  179. #179 | ZZ | January 24th, 2009 at 22:13

You guys rock! Thank you for listening.
they say "the company with the smartest customers wins…" but that is only if the company listens. You do, you should win ;-)

  182. #182 | pullupyourdamnpants | January 25th, 2009 at 22:58

Please PLEASE can you make the bookmarks widget sortable in any way I want? Into groups, but not using tabs?

Alternative: Why not allow more than one Bookmark widget, and each starts out blank instead of all of them having to contain the same bookmarks? This is so frustrating.

    But netvibes still rocks.

I am so hating your new weather widget. Could you bring the old one back? The option to display one day only – or three days – does not appear on any browser on the side in normal sized lettering, but rather huge and over everything.

I want the old widget back.

  184. #184 | Francesca | January 26th, 2009 at 12:36

Hi guys, I am 100% with Maria who says "I am so hating your new weather widget. Could you bring the old one back?"
This one is much uglier :( (

I’d like to have the old widget back. And my husband too.. the graphics was much, much nicer.
Can you please put an option for it, e.g. "choose your weather widget: old-fashioned ot new-look", something like that?

Thank you guys, the rest is great as usual.
    Francesca

Also, it would seem this widget is NOT respecting the font color. So if you have no background, and it is all black. Then you select the transparent on the color palette the text disappears at it too is black, yet all other widget have visible text.

  186. #186 | Daniel | January 26th, 2009 at 16:36

I too have the awful stacking text issue in FF. Flushed Cache and Refreshed to the same awful problem. Please fix this, now it’s just a mess.

  187. #187 | Curt | January 26th, 2009 at 17:52

The new weather widget is not compatible with Safari – you know, the default Mac browser?

Fix it or revert to the old version, or expect defections to Google Reader.

  188. #188 | randy | January 26th, 2009 at 18:19

Looks great in FF 3.0.5 Win. Doesn’t really work in Google Chrome. If you fix it in Chrome, should be fixed in Safari as well.

  189. #189 | JT | January 26th, 2009 at 19:10

I also just saw the updated weather widget and logged in to say thanks. I wasn’t that too upset about the large widget but it’s great to see you guys actually listen to and care about your customers (who aren’t paying anything.)

  190. #190 | bobby sacs | January 26th, 2009 at 19:13

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE THE WEATHER WIDGET AS SMALL AS IT USED TO BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SMAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR

  191. #191 | Heather | January 27th, 2009 at 10:35

The new weather widget is TOO BIG. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reduce it.

I have to have it completely minimised now because it pushes my other content too far down otherwise. I do like this widget, but if it doesn’t get smaller I will have to archive it.

  192. #192 | Kredit | January 27th, 2009 at 10:47

Thank you very much for the weather gadget update! Looks very nice. Glad you guys are listening. Netvibes is simply the best start page out there!

  193. #193 | James | January 27th, 2009 at 12:29

There has been a lot of comment about the formt of the Weather widget but my concern is more fundamental – the content. Why is it that the widget is forecasting about 34-35 for the next few days in Melbourne, Australia yet our Bureau of Meterology is forecasting 40-41? Discrepancies of this size mean that regardless of how good the widget looks, it is quite useless.

  194. #194 | Webseite eintragen | January 27th, 2009 at 18:55

I’ve sent feedback with the same issue Kevin is having; text overlapping and stacked. Hopefully it’s just a temporary problem :)

  195. #195 | Clay Anderson | January 27th, 2009 at 22:55

BIG thanks for addressing the size issue for the weather widget.

But a new problem: it worked once. (And beautifully, might I add.) But now I’m getting the stacked/garbled text problem that others have commented about. I’ve cleared cache, cleared cookies, deleted and re-added the widget, but nothing seems to do the trick.

    Sharing a to do list…
I thought I would share my TO DO list to show that I get things done.

But this back fired. Those that I shared the list with think I don’t do anything as they do not see my updates, when I complete items.

That’s not sharing that is simply saying "want me to send you a COPY".
Security issue you say… no if I share I meant to share. I did not mean to send you a soon to be stale copy of my list.

I like the cross To Do dragability from one to do to another. Well done. Just wish i could share instead of copy. ;-)

  197. #197 | bobby s | January 28th, 2009 at 23:56

thanks for listening! you guys are great!

i still think an option to change the graphics back to the original or some other mode would be better. i like the more cartoony few of the old one.

    but great work! thanks!

  198. #198 | Francesca | January 29th, 2009 at 09:03

thanks for reducing the size. But I am still with the "old style" supporters, can we have an option to have that widget back? It was really much nicer, this one looks like an ugly newspaper :)
Like the song goes, so please, please pleaaaaaaaaaseeeee… let me get what I want, this timeeeee

I haven’t checked out the new widgets, but Netvibes is excellent. No. 1 app on the web (and i work for one of the largest development companies in the EU)
    Keep it up!

  208. #208 | Sarah | January 30th, 2009 at 16:07

ARGH! I like the new to do list but that old problem has cropped up – I updated my list, gave a few items a background colour, then just went back to it and all my updated items have dropped away! I relied on that to do list!!! I’m going to have to try to remember what was on there and put it back, and they were really important tasks. Thanks a lot, netvibes.

  209. #209 | Lililala | January 31st, 2009 at 12:04

I noticed the Firefox extension, but how about an IE8 extension (or WebSlice?)

  211. #211 | Debby | February 2nd, 2009 at 07:21

Netvibes: I’m new to all these widgets, etc. I posted my Google Calendar widget. Is there a view Only ONE day? Options just show Agenda, Week, Month. Then when I updates on main calendar, the netvibes does not update. Thank you.

  212. #212 | seo services | February 4th, 2009 at 06:38

in fact To Do widget is my favorite one as I have real useful tool for GTD – planning, prioritising, everything in one convenient place

  213. #213 | Phil | February 9th, 2009 at 13:23

Great to have this widget but,its little too big.
    Thanks anywhere.

  214. #214 | tetoro | February 12th, 2009 at 01:58

A little off topic but how do you get rid of the message "Widgets update. Learn more" on top of my netvibes page??
    It’s taking space for nothing..
