Web 2.0 integration: the Writely module

We are happy to announce our first collaboration with another web 2.0 company: writely.com. This is also a demonstration of how web 2.0 services can collaborate and how Netvibes can be a hub for any web 2.0 applications.

To use the module you need to be a Writely user. The module is quite similar to what we’ve done with the Gmail module. Use the edit button to enter your Writely account information’s and your documents are just one click away!

Netvibes and Writely

Enjoy and give us some feedback on what over web 2.0 applications we should get into Netvibes!

  3. #3 | Josh | October 21st, 2005 at 00:35

writely.com seems to be down at the moment!?

Maybe you could integrate something like Spurl.net and a little calendar :)

    salut,
    josh

  4. #4 | will | October 21st, 2005 at 00:43

    @josh

writely was advertsing a half down period

    Florent…. EXCELENT!!!

    calendar

  8. #8 | anchorboi | October 21st, 2005 at 02:26

Remember the Milk comes to mind, but an individual Todo-List + Calendar would be even better.

  9. #9 | Bob Rowlands | October 21st, 2005 at 02:54

You’ve done a good initial job with the Writely module. It seems that you’re showing some archived documents, whereas I would expect you to only show active documents (or give a choice). Also, it would be nice if I could click near the top of the module (on the Writely logo, for example) to go to the Writely site. This last comment also applies to the weather module – it would be great to go to the weather site by clicking somewhere in the module.

    Planzo.com

  11. #11 | sajsemegaloma | October 21st, 2005 at 04:48

Interesting… I’ve never heard of Writley before, seems like these apps are just popping up like japanese mushrooms after a rainstorm. I doubt I’ll be using this one much though, but I’m sure there are people who will.

Services I would like to see inegrated are Meebo and del.icio.us. Add that and I would hardly visit anything other than NV :)
And yeah, some sort of calendar would be nice too. Rolled up together with a to-do list preferably, I don’t see a reason for having two separate modules.

Also, the functionality that I need BAD is some way of splitting feeds into groups, via tabs or something. I have just too much stuff on the page, and it’s almost all feeds!

  12. #12 | Josh | October 21st, 2005 at 05:17

Nice job on the Writely widget. It would be nice to see one for delicious (add, delete, sort by tag, etc), a calendar (add, delete, edit events), flickr, digg, gmail (write new email, delete emails, archive emails, junk emails, delete all junk emails)

  13. #13 | DeX | October 21st, 2005 at 11:42

Nice module.. But I think there are some things that people want much harder:

    – Highlighted new items in feeds
    – Opera & Safari-support
    – Themes

  14. #14 | Clément | October 21st, 2005 at 12:15

I didn’t know this website, it can be useful, thanks :) . But I agree with the lasts comments about new services:
    – More options on the Gmail module would be great
    – Possibility to create tabs (i have too much feeds!)
    – Highlighted new items in feeds
    – Opera & Safari-support
    – Lock items option
    – Calendar and to-do list (like Rainlendar would be perfect)

    Thanks a lot !

  15. #15 | Rafael | October 21st, 2005 at 13:33

Excellent module, super original mais très utile!

Bravo pour votre super boulot !

  16. #16 | beholder | October 21st, 2005 at 15:24

    Yes, Opera 8 support please!

  17. #17 | Will | October 21st, 2005 at 18:42

If we are giving wishes: a stock quote module will finally allow me to only use you and stop also using similar competitive products

    Best regards

  18. #18 | Kyle | October 21st, 2005 at 18:59

As far as some web 2.0, it’d be great to see some intergration with kiko or remember the milk. Of course, del.icio.us and spurl support would be nice as well

  19. #19 | CP | October 21st, 2005 at 21:03

I don’t use writely, but that’s great it can be added. I would really like to see:
    – Remember the Milk and Del.icio.us modules
    – Tabbed modules
    – mouseover module expansion similar to what Protopage does
    – time and date on page like protopage
    – more options for layout of modules
    – more options for gMail module

  20. #20 | hobbitt | October 21st, 2005 at 21:52

    Desired:
    — Yahoo mail
    — Calendar w/appointments. Popups or some other mechanism to show when something is due or overdue.
    — Feed items status. I often have my feeds collapsed and would like to know if something new has arrived.
    — Instant messaging. Google, Jabber, etc., not proprietary networks.

    Tres bien,

Great stuff. You have said there is a Flickr Connection in the works. How about connections to other photo communities?

  22. #22 | kourge | October 22nd, 2005 at 01:16

When can the localizers localize this new module?

  23. #23 | =DC= | October 22nd, 2005 at 04:01

Duke of AJAX, "A" number one. Anything is possible now…

  24. #24 | =DC= | October 22nd, 2005 at 04:03

I would deffinately pay for the API for Netvibes technology if you decide to sell it.

  25. #25 | TiBlond | October 23rd, 2005 at 15:04

And what about a Meebo integration on Netvibes ?
It’s could be AMAZING and Usefull like a Calendar, tabs or some others stuff said before on this thread.

    See ya.

  26. #26 | turista | October 23rd, 2005 at 22:06

    great online app

  27. #27 | Philippe | October 23rd, 2005 at 22:55

    Salut,

Very cool website, i doscovered it through La Fraise, I think.

I also discovered Writely through this note here, and that rocks !

Now I’m testing Meebo, thx turista, it rocks too !

Anyway, go on with your great project guys, Netvibes will definitely be my launch page, especially now with the bookmark module.

  28. #28 | Thomas | October 24th, 2005 at 00:52

    Great work!
How about adding previewseek.com to the search engines?
Its only beta at this point, but also great work so far.

  29. #29 | sajsemegaloma | October 24th, 2005 at 05:40

    > Its only beta at this point

So are Netvibes, GMail and Writley ;)

It’s very fashionable to be beta these days :)

    Netvibes + Writely = web 2.0

Na briga pela preferência dos usuários, os agregadores de feeds rss deixaram de oferecer um simples leitor de texto e procuram agregar cada vez mais funções. Desde o dia 20/10/2005, o netvibes oferece integração com a…

    Bonjour !
I’m using netvibes for some weeks, now, and im’ very happy of that ! One online place to get all my online life and reach all my online places !
So (i don’t know if ti’s the place to say that but), what about a calendar ? http://www.kiko.com is providing one, totally web 2.0, of course ;)
Another point : what about a yahoo mail box ? but i don’t know if this one is possible..
    Vivement la suite :)

  32. #32 | wally | November 2nd, 2005 at 15:05

so pumped about the writely module, but the one thing i find it’s missing is a link to start a new document immediately. i have my own in my bookmarks, but one directly from the writely module is just intuitive.

  33. #33 | Alex | November 9th, 2005 at 20:42

    Hi,

    I’v just noticed this tool.
    It’s a Web 2.0 validator.
Imagine what I’ve done first when I’ve seen it ?
Well, it’s pretty disapoiting, it says that my favourite Web 2.0 website is just 1 of 10 valide (sometimes it’s 2 of 11 ????, so this tools sucks a litle bit).
Anyway, who cares, Netvibes is brilliant, but maybe you should check it ?
    Here’s is the link:

    Yes encore un module interessant

    Super developpement

  35. #35 | Borge | December 6th, 2005 at 15:39

Netvibes is a very, very nice product.

Suggestion for another wbb 2.0 application besides Writely:

    Rollyo

  36. #36 | Nico | December 7th, 2005 at 12:46

La liste des documents ne devrait pas faire apparaitre les documents archivés à mon avis

  37. #37 | Chris | December 14th, 2005 at 06:50

Calendar and contacts can be easily added to netvibes with Memotoo. Check it out at memotoo.com It seems to be a great combination. it simply turns all your calendar items into an RSS feed. I know that many of you want a layout of a calendar, and I’m sure with the demand, it will come. But this is a BTN solution for now. HTH

  38. #38 | Timtom | December 16th, 2005 at 16:27

I see the list of my documents, but instead of displaying their title and a content excerpt, it displays "restricted" instead.

  39. #39 | maida01 | December 20th, 2005 at 02:40

Appreciate your very nice tool. Also Writely became my main tool to develop document.
As Timtom reported, Netvibes cannot show Writely contents after their some migration.
Could you please announce your fix date for this probelm.

Thanks for your kind support and good tool.

    Makoto from Tokyo, Japan

  40. #40 | yuwei | December 31st, 2005 at 20:49

    Writely need Opera support!
And anyway the intergration is not working now in any browser

  41. #41 | tequila | January 5th, 2006 at 11:57

How can you remove the default entry "Instructions – Make documents public in order for them to appear on this feed"?
View and Edit – Buttons do not work.
    Thank you :)

  42. #42 | tor70 | January 25th, 2006 at 06:55

i would love to be able to see my "unpublished" docuements with a view and edit link.

  43. #43 | itchy | March 17th, 2006 at 22:02

It would be nice to have access to my writely docs without having to share them to the world. Basically, I can’t use this module as it is.

i just signed up for writely two days ago (by invitation) but i cannot use this module ("No infos for this account, check your email and password and try again")

ideas? do i have to wait still google finishes the merging with writely?

  46. #46 | Walter | July 29th, 2006 at 09:55

J’ai le même problème que Daniel, depuis quelques semaines, et pourtant ça fonctionnait très bien auparavant…
    Que se passe-t-il ?
    config : Macosx, Firefox

  47. #47 | Matts Lindström | August 1st, 2006 at 22:07

I have the same problem as Daniel (post 44): "No infos for this account, check your email and password and try again"

The module doesn’t work as it is right now.

  48. #48 | Steve Knowles | August 7th, 2006 at 16:42

Let me add my voice to Posts #44 and #46 above: the Writely module (Add content) also does not work for me.

After adding my Writely account information as instructed, the message that is returned is ‘No infos for this account, check your email and password and try again’

It would be great to see this one working!

  49. #49 | tim | August 8th, 2006 at 00:14

same as #44 – module does not work. i use mac osx and camino (should be the same as firefox) as browser.

  50. #50 | david | August 10th, 2006 at 11:58

Agree with all comments above. The module currently DOES NOT WORK. However it certainly worked previously as I used it alot. Can we get a response and a fix soon?

  51. #51 | alex | August 10th, 2006 at 12:57

david et al. this should be finally fixed.

  52. #52 | Steve Knowles | August 10th, 2006 at 20:13

    He Alex,

Thanks for getting the Writely module working (more or less). There are two things still not quite right:

[1] After successfully passing my login information to Writely, what is returned is generic, rather than specific. So, instead of seeing document titles (I have two at Writely), I get three listed (i – ‘Instructions’; ii – ‘Restricted’; and iii – ‘Restricted’). All three have the two options of ‘View’ – ‘Edit’. The two ‘Restricted’ options *do* lead to my two Writely documents. The ‘Instructions’ option returns a 404.

[2] If you choose the ‘View’ link on one of those listed (see above), you don’t seem to get the latest version of the document. The URL that is used in the Writely module is in this format – ‘http://www.writely.com/View.aspx... I believe if the following format is used instead – ‘http://www.writely.com/View.aspx... then the most recent document will be returned properly.

Having said all that, thanks for getting some of the basics for the Writely module back in place.

    Netvibes is incredible …

  53. #53 | Nick | August 13th, 2006 at 04:30

I am an ancient (6+ months) writely user but have the same problem as 51- writely module does not work anymore!

I love netvibes and we are sharing the account as a basecamp for a 6-person startup with 30b, writely, to-dos, webnotes, rss feeds, del.icio.us links, and box.net. writely is critical, please fix!

    big fan of netvibes regardless…

  54. #54 | Walter | August 18th, 2006 at 18:02

Thank you for fixing it ! It worked, but only a few days… :(
Now, the returned message is now : "Pas de documents" ("no files")…
But I have à lots of published files on Writely…

  55. #55 | Tiago Stutz | August 27th, 2006 at 18:54

I’m using netvibes in our development team…. it’s just perfect!

But I’m having the same problem as #53… i succesful log in but it appears "no documents".. but I have some documents active and published on my writely account…

    Thanx in advance!!

  56. #56 | Patrick | August 28th, 2006 at 18:20

    Hello,
How can you remove the default entry "Instructions – Make documents public in order for them to appear on this feed"?
    Thanks for your answer ;)

  57. #57 | sankar | September 13th, 2006 at 22:41

I added writely in my netvibe. I signed in writely recently and created 2 docuents.
But in netvibe, It says "NO DOCUMENTS"

  58. #58 | Ulrik | September 20th, 2006 at 18:08

I was a happy user of the writely module but now it doesn’t work anymore. Saying "No documents" – however, If I log in on writely using the same username and password I see my documents. It doesn’t matter if I publish or not they don’t get to the module.

It’s a shame that this blog seemingly has no support, and that all the questions remain unanswered, except by other users.

  59. #59 | john | September 21st, 2006 at 20:41

The writely module is broken, you get this message when you try to login: ‘Account not configured, use the Edit button to set your email and password’

  60. #60 | Ulrik | September 21st, 2006 at 21:35

Writely has a problem with characters that translates into htmltags with & in them. E.g. Danish letter ø becomes ø and this breakes the title in the rss feed.

  61. #61 | urosk | September 25th, 2006 at 19:41

Writely module is not working for several days now.

Does somebody know when will start working?

  62. #62 | wh.3dxy | September 30th, 2006 at 11:59

yes,i can’t login Writely module ,i get this message when i try to login: ‘Account not configured, use the Edit button to set your email and password’

  63. #63 | wes | October 1st, 2006 at 18:12

Yes, the Writely module is broken. Must have something to do with the recent switch to Google Accounts integration. Hopefully the author of the Writely Netvibes module is aware of this and is busy at making a fix.

  64. #64 | Henrique | October 16th, 2006 at 23:48

I just discovered netvibes 3 days ago, I’ve tried to subscribe to writely.com which I didn’t know either and I’ve found Google as Wes says on #62 (Google has bought writely.com). So I have now an account at Google’s. Would it be difficult to switch writely.com to docs.google.com ?

  65. #65 | jlcollet | November 2nd, 2006 at 09:47

    Netvibes is perfect!
However the integration of Writely should be very usefull! For the time, as said by other people, it doesnot work, at least for me (with my Google account)
    How to have it working?

  66. #66 | Sam | November 20th, 2006 at 10:18

Hey dudes, what’s with the integration of docs.google (and spredsheet?) in tyhe writely module…??

    Give us some news!! ;-)

  67. #67 | stark | November 22nd, 2006 at 12:28

    Yes encore un module interessant
    Super developpement

  68. #68 | Collet | November 27th, 2006 at 12:30

Absolument d’accord : writely est parfait. Mais quid de son support? Comment faire pour l’intégrer dans netvibes quand ca ne marche pas? Quel support/forum faut-il utiliser ?
    Merci
