The next Netvibes: Wasabi Edition

Netvibes Wasabi Edition

Back in July, we revealed a few details about our work in progress on a new product and a breakthrough backend for the next Netvibes generation. Our goal was to make feed reading faster and easier.

Since then, not only we’ve been giving final touches to the architecture, but we have also designed a full-fledged feed reader. And today, we are happy to introduce you to our next version: Netvibes Wasabi Edition.

This edition makes Netvibes a truly unique and innovative 2-in-1 product offering both the widget view Netvibes pioneered and a brand new Smart Reader to improve the way your read feeds:

  • by streamlining feeds while keeping widgets only one click away
  • by offering faster updates
  • by showing articles as pictures in a beautiful mosaic view

wasabi-new

As mentionned above, this new Netvibes will be powered by new technologies. After comprehensive benchmarks, our technical team decided to step away from RDMS (Relational Database Management Systems) and picked Tokyo Tyrant (along with Tokyo Cabinet) as the main database for the feeds.

We might dive into the details later, but in a nutshell, it allows us to go much faster than traditional databases while using only a fraction of the disk space.

Like with any major release, we’re taking extra caution, hence this βeta period where users will upgrade progressively to Netvibes Wasabi Edition.

Here’s how it’s going to work:

  1. Sign up now to get your own βeta invitation
  2. Soon after, we will send out invite codes so you can have access to the new Smart Reader. We will send the codes progressively as we monitor the behavior of the new architecture.
  3. During the βeta period, we will collect feedbacks and regularly update Netvibes Wasabi Edition.
  4. When we’ll be satisfied with the new architecture and the Smart Reader, all Netvibes users will automatically be upgraded to Wasabi.

Before you apply for an invitation code, you need to know that once you’re upgraded to Netvibes Wasabi Edition, there’s no way back. Obviously, we are taking extra care of your data, but consider yourself warned.

Ready? Simply head toward http://wasabi.netvibes.com/ and follow the instructions.

Looks promising! Will the smart reader be able to sync with Google Reader? That’s crucial to me.

Wow, thumbs up guys! I am really excited about the new features coming with Wasabi. I hope you will support a simple J-K keyboard navigation for Smart Reader.

Chester, as I see you can forget Google Reader, it will be much better.

“No more hitting refresh. No more waiting minutes or hours for the next update.”

Nice..the current system was really annoying that it only updated once a day and you had to click the refresh button multiple times to get any feedback.

    Bring on wasabi!

Signed the beta queue and waiting. Has the invite codes been sent to users ?
Really hope that this could become an alternative to Google Reader.

Are invitations still being given out? What is the turn around time?

  14. #14 | evano | November 12th, 2009 at 21:32

I don’t get it… I applied for an invite code, but haven’t heard anything yet.

Today I got an email with subject, “Be the first to test the new Netvibes: enter Wasabi beta version !”

So, I click the big green “Test Wasabi!” button and I get to a page that tells me to enter my invite code. I haven’t gotten an invite code. The link from here goes to that same page.

Something is weird unless you’re intentionally playing tricks and leading me on a wild goose chase… What’s up?

@evano: Same here – I would really like to try it out though! It looks great from the screenshots!

Same problem as evano. What’s the holdup?

    @#14
I guess the mail was the first *official* announcement from Netvibes.

    @Marco

Ahh well hopefully we’ll get codes before the flood of people make their requests :D

They’re messing with my early adopter reputation… Once you lose that edge, it’s really difficult to get it back… :)
