A few months ago, Yahoo! announced that they were planning to retire their Yahoo! Pipes service. Fortunately, Netvibes already has a native alternative to offer: Tracked topics. Let’s see how this feature works.
Yahoo! will no longer allow you to create any new pipes after August 30th. Your existing pipes will still be working until the end of September, but after that, they will be completely deprecated, meaning that they will no longer crunch new content nor will they be retrievable into your Netvibes dashboard.
Your Netvibes dashboard allows you to add as many sources as you wish — RSS feeds, your own social network timelines, searches, etc. The content you aggregate may quickly become overwhelming. And even if you try to revolve around one specific topic, some of your feeds may also publish items that are not relevant to you, which is probably why you resorted to Yahoo! pipes in the first place.
Clearing the noise from your dashboard is actually easy: create Tracked Topic apps.
Your dashboard may include a wide range of feeds: General news from the New York Times, tech news from TechCrunch and The Next Web, sport news from ESPN, your best friend’s personal blog, your mom’s cooking blog, etc.
What if you wanted to create an RSS feed that would gather all the articles about a specific topic but that is not tied down to a unique source? Now you can!
If you are a VIP or a Premium Netvibes user, you probably already know our Tracked Topics feature: When you use Universal Search, you can save your search by creating a Tracked Topic app. Once added to your dashboard, the app will be automatically updated as new related content comes into your dashboard via your feeds so that you never miss a piece of news that matters to you.
As much requested, you can now create an RSS feed from any Tracked Topic app – and in as few as 3 clicks:
Following our recent updates to MisoData and app design, it’s now time for the Search & Compare apps to get their shiny upgrade.
As always, the Search & Compare apps allow you to search for people and brands on Twitter and for pages on Facebook to monitor their social activity over time.
You can then easily drag-and-compare each app to create a new competitive analysis chart showing all the data. It’s so easy that it even works with MisoData apps so you can compare social media data with your own internal data. For example, analyze the relationship between your sales numbers and Facebook likes, or see how Twitter mentions correlate with your website traffic.
Now upgraded, the Search & Compare apps provide you even more flexibility and a deeper understanding of what you see:
If you subscribed to our new VIP offer, you now have access to a new feature (previously only available on Premium Dashboards): Universal Search.
Universal Search is a new easy and powerful way to search the content of your dashboards. To learn more, read our post on the subject.
How To Use Universal Search ?
Universal Search works with three elements: keywords, parameters and operators. What makes the tool so powerful is the ability to combine these elements into a single query.
Let’s see how to use it through a few practical examples.
Examples of use
Good news for Premium users: we just updated our Active Blacklisting feature to make it even easier to use. Here’s a quick look at what’s new…
What is Active Blacklisting? Active Blacklisting allows you to refine your sources by filtering out data from certain domains or authors.
In its previous iteration, Blacklisting was only available through the Manager (Premium for Teams) or Account Page (Premium for One), which could turn out to be time-consuming if you had a lot of sources to blacklist. So we made it better and more accessible.
From now on, you’ll be able to blacklist articles, authors (by domain) or entire domains on your Premium Dashboard by simply clicking on the blacklist icon (the barred circle under the title of the article) in any item from any SmartFilters result.
After blacklisting, articles from this author or domain will no longer be displayed in SmartFilters, and will no more be analyzed in the Social Pack widgets. An easy way to get rid of the noise! Better sources, better results.
Try it now by logging into your Premium dashboard. And as usual, let us know what you think in the comments section or on our UserVoice page.
To allow us to upgrade our databases, we’re gonna need to roll out a Premium update and perform some maintenance.
Maintenance will take place this Tuesday, January 21st between 10AM and 12AM CET (check this time and date for your timezone).
During this operation, there will be no updates for analytics and filters and no way to use Universal Search.
Thank you for your understanding.

“MisoData begins where Excel ends.” Launched in June for Netvibes Premium, MisoData is a new technology that makes it easy to compare internal data alongside external social trends, just by dragging & dropping.
And today we’re taking MisoData to the next level! Until now, to use MisoData, you had three options: upload a pre-formated XLS/CSV datasheet, link to a datasheet in the cloud or input the numbers by hand, which was already a great & easy way to import all your internal data directly into your dashboard.
But what if you could connect your data source with MisoData directly, without the need of an intermediate datasheet? Wouldn’t that be even better?
Introducing MisoData API for Netvibes Premium.
Now with its brand new API, MisoData can directly grab the data at its source and integrate seemlessly with Netvibes.
- connect MisoData API with your website, your software, your own data source.
- collect data and use the API to generate MisoData apps on the fly via a special URL.
- get your data right from the source, no need to process your data via the MisoData wizard.
This new feature is available for all Premium users. If you want access to the API and its documentation, please contact us.

Last year, we released our Facebook Search & Compare app for Netvibes Premium which allowed you, as the name aptly suggests, to compare different Facebook fan pages over time. Today we’re happy to introduce our brand new Twitter Search & Compare app which will allow you to do the same with search trends on Twitter, for a more comprehensive social media coverage.
Many companies need multiple Twitter & Facebook handles for different product lines and countries. And social managers need to be able to monitor their social media in different ways. One view doesn’t tell you the whole story.
With our new Twitter Search & Compare App, you’ll be able to:
- monitor & compare followers, following and tweets
- include them in your analytics
- track all of them side-by-side
- compare them with other data (using our “drag & compare” feature)
We’ve also updated our Facebook Search & Compare app to include the “talk about” metric, which allow you to better track and compare Fan Pages and their followers.
Whether it’s on Facebook or Twitter, just search for the keywords, Fan Pages or Twitter users you want to track. Then add them to compare them with others. It’s that easy!
Want to go beyond monitoring? With Netvibes Premium, you can use our adaptive social analytics tools to spot real-time trends, uncover key influencers, and understand public sentiment and keyword clouds on Facebook, Twitter, forums, blogs and the entire Web. If you want to discover how powerful Netvibes Premium is for monitoring your brand, including social media, take a look at our demonstration video here.
