"I love it when a plan comes together!"

As you probably already know, yesterday, Netvibes.com went offline for an extended period of time. What was supposed to be a standard feature upgrade turned into a very long & stressful night for our team, all of that because of a hardware failure.

So what went wrong? To make a long story short, our master servers suddenly decided it would be fun to crash, right in the middle of the update, forcing us to promptly switch on our slave servers… which were not too happy about it, and eventually started acting out too, resulting in a dreadful “core dumped” message.

You know the rest.

Fortunately, we have plenty of backups and our tech team was able to get everything back to normal after a few hours of stress and hard work. In the end, no dashboards were harmed during the course of this unfortunate incident.

You might still experience a few hiccups in the next days while we put everything back in order and reconfigure the servers to work flawlessly. In any case, we are monitoring the situation very closely to make sure everything is now ok.

Thank you all for your patience, understanding, and support during the downtime. It was really motivating to see all the comments on Twitter about how much Netvibes was a part of your daily lives. For us, it is our daily life.

Dashboard Intelligence, Product Updates

Roland Garros 2011: the Live Dashboard your boss don't want you to see

Like every year, at the same period, productivity in thousands of businesses in France will drop significantly. The reason? Roland Garros, one of the most prestigious Grand Slam tournaments where the best tennis players from around the world come to compete.

And like every year, you’ll be torn between watching the matches and make any progress in wrapping up this urgent report your boss wanted 48 hours ago.

Don’t try and deny it, we know.

And we know that during the competition, you’ll be constantly staring at dozens of web pages, searching for the latest results, while elusively trying to hide your lack of motivation behind an Excel spreadsheet.

Fortunately, Netvibes is here to help. To make sure you won’t miss a single bit of this sports event, while keeping your computer desktop clean and tidy, we’ve set up a live Dashboard that will cover everything you need to know: Twitter and social networks monitoring, press releases, player profiles, scores, videos and much more. And all this in real time of course.

The only thing we can’t provide is an alibi generator to help you explain your loss of productivity to your boss.

All in all, a great showcase of all the tools we provide with our Dashboards to allow you to “listen, learn and act” in real-time: SmartTagging, SmartFilters and our new Bookmarklet.

Visit rolandgarros2011.netvibesbusiness.com now to discover this new live Dashboard!

A step towards a greener Netvibes

EDIT : Your various feedback has been taken into account and we have decided to push a new transparent idle mode 🙂

After implementing SmartTagging and Real-Time Advanced Search, Netvibes continues to seek new ways of improving your daily Dashboard experience.

Constantly listening to your suggestions, we have implemented a couple of new features and polished the interface.

Idle Mode

To give our servers some rest and limit their energy consumption, we’ve implemented a new “Idle Mode”. After a while, if you’re not doing anything on your Dashboard, it will automatically switch to an idle mode, while remaining available as soon as you’re ready to get back to work.

Multi-Select
Following a regular request from our users, we’ve added a “Multi-Select” feature to our Dashboards. From now on, you won’t have to select all the relevant elements one by one. Simply check the “Multi-Select” box, select the appropriate time period and that’s it!

Interface Polishing
In addition to these new features, we’ve also provided our Dashboards with a few cosmetic improvements: a smaller Facebook “Like” button, Reader View enhancements, better placement for “action” and “views” buttons, and many other things. All in all, improvements aimed at making the interface more discreet while leaving more space for content.

Log in to Dashboard right now to discover all those new things. And as usual, feel free to send us your feedback.

Live dashboarding in 2011

Following two previous successful experiments (LeWeb 2010 [link] and the CES [link]), in 2011 Netvibes is gearing up with Live Dashboarding. To follow the most important events and conferences of the year in real-time, we are going to set up dedicated dashboards over the coming months.

Netvibes’ Live Dashboarding allows you to follow specific events in real-time through all available media sources, including:

  • mentions on various social networks
  • exhibitors panel
  • and many other sources…

Mark your agenda for the forthcoming Live Dashboards:

Dashboard Intelligence

Netvibes Livebar gives easy access to your most important widgets

Last month we introduced the concept of Netvibes Dashboard Intelligence (DI), the next step in Business Intelligence 2.0 for the real-time Web which revolves around three key processes: Monitoring, Listening and Taking Action. (Check out our video presentation on Dashboard Intelligence here.)

As you know, Netvibes dashboards are the perfect solution to monitor, listen and act on everything using hundreds of professional widgets for performing real-time analysis, trend reporting, team tasks and other business processes. You’ve always been able to monitor all your feeds and run all your widgets side by side in our Widget view.

But what about when you’re in Reader view?

Today we’re pleased to introduce a new feature in our Reader view called the Livebar. The Livebar is an active sidebar that lets you run your favorite listening widgets and professional apps side-by-side with the Reader. Now you can instantly pull up your work tools for quick tasks without interrupting your concentrated reading experience.

For example, you can quickly access your Twitter widget so you can track new trending topics you find or talk with your followers about a cool new article you read. You can also access professional analytics services, like Radian6, and perform searches and analysis related to what you’re reading.

You can also use it to maintain a quick and easy access to the things that matter to you: audio sources for instance (like podcasts and webradio widgets) or any other kind of medias (wallpapers feeds, pictures of the day, videos, etc.).

To try it out, log on to your dashboard, then switch to Reader view. Edit any widget and click on the brand new “Add to Livebar” option at the top to copy it to the Livebar. Notice that you can open and close the Livebar simply by clicking the vertical border on the right side of the screen. So it’s never in the way when you want more space for your feeds.

Netvibes is the first and only reader designed for real, professional use – for busy people who need to monitor many things at once, listen to key trends and sentiments at once, and take action using multiple work tools at once. SmartTagging and Livebar are two important new features we’ve introduced recently to help professionals self-organize all their content and access all their work tools, respectively.

This year, we’ll continue to add other powerful Dashboarding Intelligence features to help transform your dashboard into the ultimate business intelligence solution for Monitoring, Listening and Taking Action across the real-time Web and your organization.

So stay tuned and give us your feedback!

LeWeb 2010: SmartTagging put into practice

If you read our blog on a regular basis, you already now that during LeWeb, the big annual gathering about all things Internet, we launched a big scale live test of our new SmartTagging feature. The time has come to assess this first full scale test.

If you’ve never heard of SmartTagging or Dashboard Intelligence, you’ll find all the information you need in our previous post entitled Business Intelligence Reinvented for the Real-Time Web.

In short, if you don’t have time to read it all, let’s just say that SmartTagging is a process implemented on our professional dashboards through which you can tag all relevant information with sentiments and then share this expertise with your collaborators.

A useful tool to monitor the competition on the Web or centralize the information feeds on a particular subject and then bring a qualitative added value.

During LeWeb 2010, using our dedicated dashboard, SmartTagging allowed us to convert the intangible chaos of information (from feeds, blogs, videos, photos, etc.) into tangible trends.

For instance, it allowed us to get a grasp of the general feeling from LeWeb visitors who used our feature.

It also allowed us to identify keywords (brands, people, topics, etc.) for which people gave an “awesome” sentiment (but this works with other sentiments as well, whether good or bad).

Finally, it allowed us to also identify key trends (i.e. the most tagged keywords) during the event.

And this is only a fraction of the possibilities of what SmartTagging can help you achieve. SmartTagging can assist you in getting the best of specific events (like LeWeb in our example) or help your company on a daily basis to transform everyday work actions into key trends, reports and alerts, trigger business processes and enable real-time decision making within organizations.

Dashboard Anytime. Introducing new Offline mobile access.

First we promised to help you “dashboard everything” on the real-time Web and fulfilled this promise with 1-Click Dashboards and Wasabi’s 2-in-1 Smart Reader. Then we helped you “dashboard anywhere” with new mobile versions for Android, iPad and iPhone, featuring real read/unread syncing across all platforms.

Starting today, now you can “dashboard anytime” and continue to read your favorite feeds even when you’re offline. Now when you go offline, you will see a special notification that you’re in “offline mode” and you can still continue to read articles. Even better, you can organize articles and mark posts to read them later when you get back online.

The next time you go back online, your read/unread counts and Read Later lists will automatically be synced to your account and all of your other devices. This means that even if you’re in a subway under the ocean or on a plane up in the sky, you can continue to read all your feeds, and when you get back to your home or office, it will all be synced up! How cool is that?

As you know, Netvibes is not a startpage. It’s an enterprise strength real-time dashboard that’s also used by agencies, brands, governments and enterprises around the world. Our latest innovations this year enable world-class organizations to “dashboard everything, anywhere, anytime across all devices”, even while traveling in locations without Internet access. This makes sure that you can be always on, even when you’re on the go.
