New sharing features, Facebook Connect and more

Today, we are happy to announce new sharing features: you can now share almost everything in your page with your family, friends or colleagues. Through a new interface, it’s now easier to share an article, a widget or a whole tab. Your page content can also be shared in many more ways than before, including the popular social network Facebook.

Social networks

Publishing an article, a widget or a tab to your public profiles is now just one click away. Available public profile include Netvibes Activities, Twitter and Facebook thanks to Facebook Connect.

To do so, activate Facebook and Twitter by clicking the corresponding buttons and follow the instructions for each social network. This step is only required for the first time. Once configured, links will be published in your Facebook News feed and Twitter stream.
Note:Facebook Connect only works with Firefox for the moment.

E-mail

Because everyone has an address, e-mail is the safest way to share an article, a widget or a tab.

Simply type your friends e-mail addresses and you’re good to go. It gets even easier if they are in your contact list thanks to the auto completion: type the first letters of a contact name and a list will complete against matching contacts.

Read later

Articles have an additional tab to save a link in your private activities. Handy when you need to mark an article so you can read it later.

Copy to your public page

If you have one, you can share a widget or a tab with the world by putting it on your public page.

We hope that these new features will make sharing, working and collaborating easier than before. Let us know what you think about them. Enjoy!

    How do I prevent the share links from displaying in my RSS widget? I notice that it’s tied to the "show more details setting". I need the show more details for my reddit RSS feed so I can get to the linked sites directly (and not the thread on reddit.com), but I most certainly do NOT want the share star icon below each item. It drastically reduces the number of entries I can display on a page.

  2. #2 | Chris | November 13th, 2008 at 18:01

    What Andrew said!!

  3. #3 | Jetlag | November 13th, 2008 at 18:09

    Thanks so much for this feature! LOVE IT!

  4. #4 | Tom | November 13th, 2008 at 18:11

    Ditto. Either put it on the top row or make it removable. I hate it.

  5. #5 | Dave | November 13th, 2008 at 18:13

    Ditto

  6. #6 | Dave | November 13th, 2008 at 18:17

    Please stop the social networking madness and add options to remove the "Share" link from each widget, and the star from each article. My beloved Netvibes is becoming a cluttered atrocity.

  7. #7 | Ruben | November 13th, 2008 at 18:18

    I agree. How can I remove those annoying Share icons?

  8. #8 | Benjamin | November 13th, 2008 at 18:19

    Same thing here. The star on the right was more than enough for this. A new line just eats up way too much space.

    Additionally I hate that the titlebar now always shows those links.

    Do we really have to make greasemonkey and stylish scripts to fix every new features netvibes puts out. come on!

  9. #9 | Don | November 13th, 2008 at 18:21

    Third! That star in the RSS feed is annoying – please make it go away or have it show up after the headline.

  10. #10 | Chris | November 13th, 2008 at 20:06

    Fourth. I use Netvibes because it gives me a clean interface for all of my feeds. The star is screwing it up.

  11. #11 | Steve | November 13th, 2008 at 20:35

    Why in the world burden every feed and widget with a big "Share" at the top? If something absolutely has to be at the top, an icon would suffice and would not interfere with headings nearly as much.

    The widgets are increasingly flaky and unreliable and Netvibes still won’t do something as simple as white text on a black background — but we have Shares and stars and Facebook and public pages and etc. The ongoing attempt to turn Netvibes into a social-networking platform is wasting programming resources and making the site clumsier and less useable.

  12. #12 | Pete | November 13th, 2008 at 20:43

    As above, please can we have an option to remove these Share links.

  13. #13 | Pikadude No. 1 | November 13th, 2008 at 21:07

    …Wow. A unanimous booing by ten different people, myself included. Guess what, Netvibes: You messed up.

  14. #14 | ptx | November 13th, 2008 at 21:31

    Plz do not waste my limited "above the fold" space with the starred row in "show more details" view, make it disappear.

    I am interested in reading the content, do not disturb attention with the very colourful star.. it’s better in "simple view" with the hover effect.

  15. #15 | Benjamin | November 13th, 2008 at 22:45

    I’m using a custom stylish style:

    @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

    @-moz-document domain("netvibes.com") {
    .share {
    visibility: hidden;
    height: 0px;
    width: 0px;
    position: absolute;
    left: -10px;
    top: -10px;
    }
    }

    this removes it for me. Hope that helps others and I also hope netvibes will fix it. It was not that intrusive right of the content items.

  16. #16 | Darryn | November 13th, 2008 at 22:46

    I agree, please remove the share links next to each feed post. it completely messes up the amount of items that can be displayed on a page

  17. #17 | Dave | November 13th, 2008 at 23:05

    Please put an end to all this social networking madness and add options for removing the star and the "Share" link. My beloved Netvibes is becoming a cluttered atrocity. I’ve always loved Netvibes for the clean interface, and things like this are slowly chipping away at my good will.

  18. #18 | junkwes | November 14th, 2008 at 01:17

    for goodness sakes, please remove the share Icon/link! it’s sooo distracting and annoying! What kind of hairbrained idea was this anyway, netvibes? I will switch if this is not removed in the next few days.

  19. #19 | Magoogirl | November 14th, 2008 at 02:52

    The sharing emphasist and the annoying, spacehogging sharing-star have finally forced me to move to google reader. I liked my netvibes nice and clean, with the option that interact out of the way but still usable if i wanted to access it. Now, it’s just clumsy and cluttered.

    *sigh*

  20. #20 | Kiwi | November 14th, 2008 at 03:05

    Adding my voice to the chorus – please allow us to remove the share buttons! Netvibes is now completely indispensible to me but I feel like I’ve lost half my real estate to a feature I don’t want and can’t remove. Thanks for continuing to offer new features guys but please don’t make them mandatory when they take up loads of room …

  21. #21 | Heminator | November 14th, 2008 at 05:56

    OH GOD IT BURNS!!! MAKE IT GO AWAY!!! THE PAIN!!!

    Seriously, lose the share link thingy. PRONTO. It’s taking up precious screen real estate on my small laptop screen.

  22. #22 | penfold | November 14th, 2008 at 06:51

    Please remove the star share from each feed entry Screen Real estate is too valuable for this. At least give the option to turn sharing off. It is something I personally never use.

    thanks

  23. #23 | Pikadude No. 1 | November 14th, 2008 at 07:55

    Now I’m really impressed – eighteen different people have commented on this blog entry, and *everyone is in agreement*. No dissenters. Do you have any idea how rare this is on the Internet? :-)

  24. #24 | Luke | November 14th, 2008 at 07:56

    The problem with placing so much stuff in the title bar of a feed is that the actual title of the feed has to be really short if you don’t want the ‘read all / number of unread items’ thing to disappear. I would vote for placing the ‘share’, ‘edit’ and ‘reload’ items all under the small ‘options’ arrow. This would be muuuch cleaner. Oh and please I want white text on a black background… out of the 80+ themes available only the darkvibes one does that… :s A bit more customization options would be nice

  25. #25 | Dirk | November 14th, 2008 at 10:28

    These Sharing-things are annoying. It’s a waste of space and focus. You shouldn’t make them mandatory.

  26. #26 | hans | November 14th, 2008 at 10:35

    remove.
    the.
    yellow.
    share.
    stars.
    please!

    (or give us at least an option to enable or disable this ennoying, distracting, ugly, space-taking thingies)

    Last night I couldn’t sleep because I saw yellow stars everywhere, aaah!

    I don’t wanna share anything, ever, I’m an egoist! ;-)
    (Seriously, personally I only use netvibes for myself, let everybody choose to use netvibes as they like it.)

  27. #27 | edukardo | November 14th, 2008 at 12:45

    Please remove the yellow star. Is annoying and unusefull.
    Please…

  28. #28 | Kukeltje | November 14th, 2008 at 12:54

    +1 (or +10 if it was allowed)

  29. #29 | Jambe | November 14th, 2008 at 13:28

    Please include an option to remove the Share star on each entry. It takes up too much vertical space.

    I had my tab feeds arranged in such a way as to use most of the screen real estate — now each of my tabs makes a scroll bar appear.

  30. #30 | Cim | November 14th, 2008 at 14:09

    I just wanted to say that I agree with the first poster. Love new features but it would be better if all things like this was optional. Being able to customize Netvibes to fit what you need is the best feature of all.

  31. #31 | Daniel | November 14th, 2008 at 14:37

    Sports Scores Widget that matches the Netvibes look and feel please…

  32. #32 | Dave | November 14th, 2008 at 15:50

    Benjamin, nice work with the Stlyish fix- works great. Unfortunately it seems like we need one of these for every new feature coming out of Netvibes these days.

  33. #33 | Lukas | November 14th, 2008 at 16:09

    This is a great feature and a very useful way to get Facebook Connect running!

  34. #34 | leo | November 14th, 2008 at 16:12

    Oh and can you make netvibes work on the g1 google phone please¿

  35. #35 | últimas noticias | November 14th, 2008 at 16:46

    I think it’s great feature. Sharing and collaborating was never so easy

  36. #36 | StickmanInDC | November 14th, 2008 at 19:13

    Please, for the love of God, let me turn it off. The yellow star, the "share" link in the title bar, all of it. I don’t want to share, I just want to read my feeds…

  37. #37 | unnuagedecole | November 14th, 2008 at 19:42

    Yep, love the new features but NOT new ‘Share’ thing in title bar eating up all space
    as said all along

    + ongoing negative comments from friends on
    no so many options with light text / dark backgrounds

    annoying grey pop up at the right top end !

    not being able to choose whoever to be or not added as friend, specially when most unwanted content displayed 2 clics away]

    >Benjamin, I’d love to use your stylish fix…But dreaming of having a clue of how where when to play it ^^

    Voila

  38. #38 | JJTse | November 15th, 2008 at 01:11

    Totally disagree!
    I LOVE the new Share feature, especially sharing with my FB friends.

    Keep up the great work guys!

  39. #39 | oli | November 15th, 2008 at 18:25

    please don’t forget what you were great at
    (a pesonalized starting page) and make make netvibes faster easier simpler.

    you’re not a social network and we couldn’t care less.

  40. #40 | sero | November 16th, 2008 at 00:08

    Gotta chime in with the (unanimous?) response so far. If other people want to share their shit that’s cool, but having a big ol’ star under every item is bad design, simple as. Please ditch it or let me turn it off.

  41. #41 | West | November 16th, 2008 at 02:36

    I would like to turn the share "feature" off. How do I do it? It looks like someone posted a style band-aid to fix it. How do I apply this band-aid? Can someone spell it out for me so that I don’t have to wait for netvibes to respond to all of these requests to turn this horrible "feature" off.

  42. #42 | Dan | November 16th, 2008 at 04:15

    Please get rid of the stupid share garbage. It makes Netvibes unusable.

  43. #43 | Silver | November 16th, 2008 at 08:44

  44. #44 | gutschein | November 16th, 2008 at 13:54

    I Think so too. Thanks for this nice feature! I like it!

  45. #45 | nyblues | November 16th, 2008 at 16:51

    Thanks guys. I love this feature. Love sharing my readings with my fb friends

  46. #46 | Icantbelievehowbadthisfeatureis | November 17th, 2008 at 03:37

    I have never seen such a resounding dislike for a new feature than I’ve seen in these comments. Please, please, please listen to the people, Netvibes!

  47. #47 | Zak | November 17th, 2008 at 08:31

    Hello and greets for the great job with Netvibes. I’m a site user since 2006 and respect all new changes and improvements you’ve done so far.
    But I’m just curious is there a way to disable that ‘share’ stars on my feeds. I accidently click them so often and that makes me freaky. If there is an option to disable that future it will be great for the people who don’t want to use it for the moment.
    Thanks in advance for your reply, and keep up the good work!

  48. #48 | FireStorm | November 17th, 2008 at 08:47

    If you have Firefox and prefer the greasemonkey extension to stylish, here’s a little script that’ll get rid of that "feature"…

    // ==UserScript==
    // @name Netvibes – No share
    // @namespace FireStorm
    // @include http://www.netvibes.com/*
    // ==/UserScript==

    (function(){unsafeWindow.$$("a.share").hide();setTimeout(arguments.callee, 1000);})();

  49. #49 | Hotels | November 17th, 2008 at 12:49

    I love this feature. Many Thanks

  50. #50 | sharing-features | November 17th, 2008 at 12:54

    I join the others:
    * the share link in the title hides the real title
    * the share link in the feeds takes way too much space

    The star on the right was very good before, and in the title, share should be in the widget’s menu.

  51. #51 | Zak | November 17th, 2008 at 13:11

    Thank you for your suggestion FireStorm, but i am using different browsers and operating systems. That is the reason why your specific solution doesn’t suit me at all ;-)

  52. #52 | alex_mayorga | November 17th, 2008 at 16:44

    With *.facebook.com blocked down here the much hated star doesn’t do anything but to get stuck at "Transferring data from static.ak.connect.facebook.com" no I can’t even add items to the Netvibes public activity at least try to add the item to Netvibes first before going all Facebook crazy.
    Also, please give us a way to turn this off or select the services to use for sharing from the get go.

    Thanks and keep up the good work.

  53. #53 | FireStorm | November 17th, 2008 at 18:49

    Some people didn’t know how to install the greasemonkey script on the french blog, so here’s a "cleaner" version with a simpler installation. Just install the greasemonkey extension then paste that to the URL bar and hit enter:

    data:text/javascript;charset=utf-8,%2F%2F %3D%3DUserScript%3D%3D%0D%0A%2F%2F %40name Netvibes – No share%0D%0A%2F%2F %40namespace FireStorm%0D%0A%2F%2F %40include http%3A%2F%2Fwww.netvibes.com%2F*%0D%0A%2F%2F %3D%3D%2FUserScript%3D%3D%0D%0A%0D%0Avar style %3D document.createElement("style")%3B%0D%0Astyle.setAttribute("type"%2C "text%2Fcss")%3B%0D%0Avar text %3D document.createTextNode("a.share { display%3A none !important%3B }")%3B%0D%0Astyle.appendChild(text)%3B%0D%0Adocument.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(style)%3B%0D%0A%2F%2F.user.js

  54. #54 | theywillignoretheplea | November 18th, 2008 at 04:38

    I don’t think they’ll take these comments into consideration. When they launched that huge green Add Content button, people in the comments hated it (overwhelmingly) and that was like a month ago. The green button is still there…

    I think they put this "share" feature there because they want it to be used more which will theoretically increase netvibes visibility. I have no problem with making it the default, but I sure hope they put an option in that will allow us to choose for ourselves whether we want to use this feature.

  55. #55 | Maurice (Netvibes) | November 18th, 2008 at 14:54

    Thanks to everyone for your feedback. We tweaked a little bit this new feature. The "Share" link now uses less space on your page and looks more integrated. We strongly hope that these changes are helpful.

    We also have tips for those of you who want to cram more into your page: when you Edit your feeds, you can uncheck "Show more details" to reduce the level of details displayed.
    Moreover, you can go to "Settings/General settings" and uncheck "Give items more space". It will make your feeds more compact.

  56. #56 | Chris | November 19th, 2008 at 17:14

    Awesome tweak Netbvibes… thanks!

  57. #57 | Laurent | November 19th, 2008 at 21:28

    Still, the Edit etc used to be hidden till you hovered over the heading. Now, having 30 or so boxes / feeds on my page, all I see when I come to my Netvibes page is the number of Edit / Share on the page. Its irritating. I kept Netvibes for how clean I could make it compared to a cluttered igoogle. I hope this gets removed or gets an option to be removed as I would hate to have to go to igoogle.
    I was already disappointed by the quality of the iphone version, please stop making Netvibes worse!

  58. #58 | SEO Links | November 21st, 2008 at 13:56

    Sharing features are great………I use them everyday

  59. #59 | Benjamin | November 22nd, 2008 at 05:04

    I’m with Laurent:
    The share, edit etc. links should hide until I hover over the widget. All my Google Mail widgets now only show "Google Mail: " and no title after that. Good thing I know my order but still annoying.

  60. #60 | tarusexpert | November 23rd, 2008 at 15:58

    I think this service it is very important for those who wishes to find a maximum of friends, without paying attention to their accessory. Fine!

  61. #61 | ID Security | November 23rd, 2008 at 17:02

    My Facebook friends love the sharing features…….thanks guys !

  62. #62 | eduk | November 24th, 2008 at 12:45

    Just put the "share" options into the feed reader, not the front page. It`s boring and annoying.

  63. #63 | eduk | November 24th, 2008 at 12:55

    Another thing, Maurice. When you turn details off, you don’t see the share options any more, but you loose content. It’s not the idea. KEEP NETVIBES SIMPLE AND USEFULL. It’s the best option.
    I’m thinking in another start page…

  64. #64 | eduk | November 24th, 2008 at 13:00

    I simply can’t read it without open the rss reader. It confuses. P l e a s e r e m o v e t h e a r r o w

  65. #65 | naf | November 24th, 2008 at 21:16

    The "share" is still too dominant even it takes maybe a bit less space than before. With the photo at the start, and the "share" at the end, what’s left is not enough for the content. I guess "share" is useful for people who really use it. Could it be an option in the general setting and simply leaves the user to decide if they want this function or not?

  66. #66 | Evgeny | November 26th, 2008 at 22:28

    Maybe you guys use English interface language most of the time, but I use Russian. In English this is "Share", in Russian it’s "Redaktirovat’" (not using actual Cyrillic letters ’cause you may not see it). It’s 13 letters! Only 5 in English variant… It’s truly annoying! I’ve wrote an ugly Greasemonkey script to remove it, but yours are much better; will use either of two posted above instead.
    Netvibes seems like not listening to us.

  67. #67 | SEO | November 27th, 2008 at 16:13

    I appreciate your share features……..they are wonderful and telling my Facebook friends about them

  68. #68 | Sinergio | November 28th, 2008 at 14:03

    And again an awesome contribution! You guys just rule! I still have to get familiar with it but as far as I gave it a try it’s great. You develop your features faster than we can use them:)
