Introduce full customization features : Pimp your netvibes and import myspace and twitter themes
Your Netvibes won’t look the same anymore !
Today we are excited to introduce new customization features for Netvibes, which are available from the settings panel at the top right of your page.
Create your own theme

The first new functionality is a theme creator. Located in the new “Custom theme” tab of the themes section, it will allow you to create an infinite number of variants by changing the color. Simply pick a color from the palette and all your netvibes will dress up accordingly. In case you want to have a very specific color, you can also enter the exact value in hexadecimal format.

New themes
This update also introduces 4 new themes.
Veerle theme
Named after its author’s name, Veerle Pieters, this theme shows nice rounded modules and elegant new tabs. Veerle did an amazing job by pushing the limits of netvibes skinnability. The result is an exclusive theme showing her talent and style.

Dark theme
Featuring a dark background and low contrast, this theme will be perfect for those who prefer negative contrast.

Fresh theme
With it’s green header and vivid colors, this one will be refreshing during this hot summer.

Fluo theme
We heard you, no more washed colors. Let’s go with some fancy flashy fluo tones.

Wallpapers
Go to your “Settings” panel and you will notice a new entry in the options list: “Wallpapers”. This new option will let you change the background image for the header and the module area.
Naturally, we offer you a selection of netvibes images but there is more: you can grab pictures directly from flickr, myspace, twitter or choose a background color !
And for those of you who like things to be pixel perfect, we included options for alignment, text color and more.

Now it’s up to you
We have built the tools to let you customize more than ever your personal page. Now, unleash your creativity and pimp your netvibes! And, as we are curious to see how far you will go, we have created a flickr pool for you to post your screenshots. Also let us know what you think about these new features by sending us your feedback.
enjoy !

These are wonderful new features. However, until you are switching the graphics for tabs, module borders etc. to PNGs with a transparent alpha channel, 90% of the wallpaper/color/theme-combinations tend to look ugly.
If this is a compatibility issue, I’m sure you could detect the browser and use GIFs as a fallback for IE (or make it an option in the Settings).
#6 | ShinKo | May 5th, 2007 at 15:17
Hello there! I love the new theme!! Really! Especially the dark theme since white color occasionally hurts my eyes. And i love the ‘Veerle Pieters’ theme, it’s colourful with my favourite peach red~!
This update rocks!! Thanks alot for all the work!
#7 | Kai | May 5th, 2007 at 15:45
Could you make the "Header Height" setting more flexible? I would love to give it more room to user taller graphical header backgrounds.
#8 | Dr Nick | May 5th, 2007 at 15:49
This is an awesome update, I knew you were planning custom wallpapers but I didn’t expect this level of customisation! The ability to import pictures from Flickr etc. is really neat. Thanks!

I love you people. This is a long-awaited upgrade to Netvibes. Thanks for all your work.

Perfect!
We were waiting for it for so long…
Now we need also:
1) Possibiliy to use in the same WEBNOTE different fonts and sizes, bold, underline,…
2) Printing possibility.
It could be interesting to print the Netvibes Tab but at the moment it comes out in unpractical way as all modules are printed in a single column…
Thanks and good work!
We wait for the Personal Universes
#11 | durerca | May 5th, 2007 at 17:58
If I could make one request, it would be nicer if you can keep the rounded corners on modules like in Coriander when you choose a customized theme color.
#12 | JozhB | May 5th, 2007 at 18:30
Awesome!! I like the Verlee’s style, great designer.
Thanks Netvibes, you are the best.

#14 | Luke | May 5th, 2007 at 20:37
Could you please make thew background image ’stretch’ over the whole page. Now you get this white strip at the bottom of the website. It kinda screws up the overall look, especially with the dark theme selected.
Hope you guys understand what I’m talking about.

hey another great update, good job the Netvibes team, been using your service and i have to say i’m very pleased, keep up the good work
#16 | Jeff Staple | May 5th, 2007 at 21:42
Hmm, with all these new wallpaper options, I have to wonder why there’s no option for transparent modules. I found some really nice wallpapers, but you can’t really see them because the modules get in the way.
Always glad to see improvement though, and this is much more powerful than what iGoogle is offering.
#17 | Coconut TV | May 5th, 2007 at 22:08

I am so glad to be a netvibes user and I have personally converted maybe 10 people!!!
#19 | aprii | May 5th, 2007 at 22:29
Great, but I notice one bug/problem. Theme fluo in the Firefox (Windows XP) require too many memory. When I use Coriander, computer use 329MB swap. When I use fluo, computer use 458MB.
#20 | xxdesmus | May 5th, 2007 at 22:49
Amazing work guys. You just keep proving how far ahead of the competition netvibes really is.
#21 | duran | May 5th, 2007 at 23:12
Looks like a great step!
though all of my icons from RSS sites aren’t set up with good anti aliasing against the dark themes, which I love btw.
I’ll keep playing!

#25 | Alan | May 6th, 2007 at 03:29
Nice looking themes!
#26 | Inbal | May 6th, 2007 at 12:29
I appreciate what you did here, but this theme-based thinking is needlessly restrictive in my opinion. You could have added a full colour palette to each part of the page, through the modules and tabs menus and the wallpapers settings section (instead of the current colour choices on the modules menus), so themes would only determine the structure but offer colours as a recommendation. That would solve the whole complication of having to choose between different parts of a theme.
#27 | Dexter | May 6th, 2007 at 16:51
Netvibes’ memory footprint is starting to become HUGE. With the Veerle theme applied, it brings Firefox from 70 to about 180MB!
#28 | lime | May 7th, 2007 at 11:39
great new features but I agree with Dexter: the memory usage of netvibes is becoming a problem… using new themes, especially the rounded themes, the switch between tabs (I mean netvibes tabs but also FF tabs) takes nearly a second… while using other theme (like the new "fresh") it’s immediate.
I think this is an annoying new features…
(I’m using a Core Duo 1.66 with 1GB DDR2 on win XP)
#29 | ZullCore | May 7th, 2007 at 13:10
Great new fatures.
In theme verler.. these colors he was ugly in modules.
Please put several colors in modules.
Thx
#30 | Andrew | May 7th, 2007 at 17:17
I love the fact that i found this because i had a digg module on my page and it showed it on there. :p
Great work guys!
#31 | Patrick Beer | May 7th, 2007 at 17:39
This is obviously a great work. This updates was announced such along time.
The only thing that annoys me is the footer line that seperates the modules from the imprint. I dont mind having the imprint there, but this line screws up the overall view a bit.
There probally is a workaround by using Greasemonkey, but i dont like using lots of firefox addons..
so I wondered if you can just remove it or make it a setting, so the user has the choice.
but great work guys anyway. I appreciate your work!
Pat
#32 | Zaarch | May 7th, 2007 at 18:58
Yeah, I love it.
A few thoughts…
I agree w./ durerca above, it would be nice to have a personalized theme w./ the rounded corners that are currently available only with the Verlees theme applied.
Also, stretch would be great for background images.
Re transparent modules I’ve set transparency through the older (Fazibear) Netvibes customization mudule. The only problem there is that transparency is set for everything including text so text can become hard to read.
In the long run it would be nice if Netvibes let you set transparency through settings.
Anyway, as always 200% better than Google homepage.
#33 | Luke | May 8th, 2007 at 16:10
I’m sorry to mention this again, but the tooltips that just won’t disappear when they are supposed to are driving *** crrrazy. It’s so damn annoying. Would really appreciate it if something could be done to fix it.

cheers.

I’ve noticed that the memory usage problems with the Veerle and Fluo themes, for some reason, only happen with Firefox under Windows. In Linux it seems to work fine. I’m using FF 2.0.0.3 on both systems.

looks like the new feature made the pages really slow for me. netvibes takes ages to load, even on my fast cable connection. also looks like the slow loading affects the visits: snapshot.compete.com/netv…
just make netvibes fast please. makes no sense otherwise.

#44 | Andy | May 15th, 2007 at 07:11
Looking at the sidebar of this page under "Features in the works" the point "Read/Unread status" is striked out. What does that mean?
I would appreciate an easy (one-click) way to mark a whole feed read without the need to open the feed and then click the appropriate button in the title bar.
#45 | brandon | May 16th, 2007 at 00:13
themes are really great looking…
however, are others noticing a spike in cpu usage and a bit slower performance with these new ones?
i decided to stick to my old one for this reason.
#46 | Jonas | May 16th, 2007 at 10:20
Nice to see this.
I want to remind you, that you have no-that-often updated "Features in the Works" list on the right. It’s time to strike through the "User Background Image" item.
And I believe it’s time to remove this panel at all.
#47 | Paulão | May 16th, 2007 at 21:43
Hey, here in Brazil, if there’s something popular in internet, that’s Orkut (from Google). If Netvibes could provide a module that allow the user to see his ’scrapbook’ of Orkut, it would be awesome.
Thanks.
#48 | Nanaki | May 17th, 2007 at 12:52
Nice features, but using Fluo really fried my cpu and memory.
Making it quite unusable, I switched back to my previous one (the bluey gradient one) and it’s a bit better, even though it still seems to use a bit more memory. Using Fx 2.0.0.3 on a WinXP box.
#49 | johnus | May 24th, 2007 at 16:53

I’m sad there’s no option for transparent modules. Wallpapers are good, but can’t be all. You can’t take so much of space while loading netvibes.
I haven’t used Safari, but Firefox is still now trouble free for Netvibes.. any clues??

A man is trying a very unusual way to propose to his girlfriend. He wants people to forward an email to as many people as possible and he hopes that it will eventually get to his girlfriend. Details here: http://www.proposal-to-mary.com
Here is what he wants people to send by email:
You could help me a lot to spread my proposal to Mary – it is important that it is distributed as widely as possible so that it eventually reaches Mary. If you would like to support my proposal to Mary, please send the following text by email to a lot of people
————- SNIP (email text end) —————
WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS, PLEASE HELP TO DISTRIBUTE IT TO OTHER PEOPLE!
For a long time I have tried to find a special way to propose marriage to my girlfriend Mary, whom I know for five years now. I wanted it very special, romantic and memorable, something our grandchildren would still remember.
And here is my idea: I will send out the proposal to Mary to 50 complete strangers, people I don’t know – hoping, that they will forward my proposal to as many people as possible, which in turn forward it etc. And some day, I hope, it will reach Mary, after it has travelled a very long way. I know, it will take a long time and I am quite nervous…
From the poem MY Mary will know immediately that the proposal is for her.
I have created a homepage ( http://www.proposal-to-mary.com ) where you can find the current status of my quest. You can use the homepage to check if the proposal has already reached Mary (in that case it is not necessary anymore to forward the mail).
Once the proposal has reached Mary, I will put a note on these pages. Also I will publish there how many people have read the proposal so that everybody can see how far it has spread and that it is getting closer to Mary.
And of course you will find there what I am waiting for most: Mary’s answer! I can’t tell you, how nervous I am… Will she accept my proposal? Will she like the unusual way how she got it, through the hands of thousands of messengers all over the world?
Please cross your fingers for me! And please – help me by sending the mail to as many people as possible, to help it spread, so that it eventually reaches Mary.
And here is my proposal:
Mary, please forgive me, as you know English is not my native language. And I am not a poet. But I mean it from my heart.
My angel,
Five years ago, I will always remember the day When fate made us meet, blissful Alaskan moments in May Earth spun around us and a journey began Love, warmth, happiness, enough the years to span.
The longer it lasts the more grows our bond And with 80 still – of you I will be fond Whatever happens, I will stay at your side Through good and bad, together let us stride
No second with you was ever wasted
You are the sweetest I have ever tasted
We have spent so many years – why not a life?
Mary, will you marry me – and become my wife?
Mary, if you have received that and have recognized me, then give me a sign so that I can continue with the romantic part of my proposal…

The UWA widgets are supported on the Iphone, but it’s a particular platform and for example there is some issues with iframes and Flash is not supported.
UWA widgets are rendered through an iframe (like in Netvibes) but the ugly scrollbars that you can see on your regular browser will be nicely handled automatically by the Iphone browser.
You can’t edit preferences yet (it’s read only).

thankssCould you please make thew background image ’stretch’ over the whole page. Now you get this white strip at the bottom of the website. It kinda screws up the overall look, especially with the dark theme selected.
Hope you guys understand what I’m talking about.
