Netvibes launch a 1 GB personal web storage module !
This is an other move toward the web desktop.
Some of you have seen it on the side bar, the netvibes webstorage with box.net.
Now you have a 1 GB hard drive available all the time on your desktop. And if you add some MP3s you can clic on them, they will play automatically.
This module made in partnership with box.net and is a part of an ambitious projet to build a web 2.0 service ecosystem. If you own a box.net account you can log in but if you don’t you can in one click create one automatically. No more hassle and multiple forms to answer !
you can manage your box.net webdrive from the netvibes module adding and deleting any files from there (you can add files up to 10MB).
We also have some exciting features coming soon, including the ability to share your files and view images in the module.
We’d love to have your feedback on this, if you know some other services we should intégrate in our ecosystem, please let us know !

Very nice.
I would like to be able to select multiple file or even an entie directory as opposed to 1 file at a time. In any case, well done.

Hey all- Aaron from Box.net here- we’re working with netvibes to incorporate many of your suggestions. We wanted to launch the module in its current form to make sure we were giving people what they wanted. It’s basic now, but more to come!

"the ability to share your files and view images in the module."
This is what Im looking for. How`s your progress on this? Any spesific goals for this user interface?
#21 | Fanch | March 22nd, 2006 at 09:45
=> Perte de temps.
;o)
#22 | Henrik | March 22nd, 2006 at 09:45
Its working perfectly but I’d like to have a ‘reload’ or update button.
… And all that other wonderful functionality.
#23 | Marlin | March 22nd, 2006 at 10:01
To provide a direct link to a file that you’ve uploaded to your Box.net account, the receipient must first open an account there. Not cool. For this reason, I will not use the service.
#24 | Roman | March 22nd, 2006 at 10:14
Great! But how to delete?
#25 | jean | March 22nd, 2006 at 10:35
Errr…How many megas a single file can be?
i been looking on their website and thers is not
info about that.. Or if there is, who knows where,
I can’t see it.
Besides, they say that you get a free upgrade if
you get 5 friends to use the service but they don’t
say for how long your account will have the 5 gigs.. maybe just a month…
There is a few things about the service that are not
very nice.. like the fact that they have an advert. to
upgrade $$ in the module and also the miss information
to get you to sign up.
There must be a better service elsewhere..

Great feature, and box.net looks like a great provider too (too bad no Linux support).
But why not build a generic module too that supports WebDAV or SFTP? That way we could point to whatever repository we chose?

Sorry netvibes – back and staying.
iCal and Box are great additions – congrats on the funding – look forward to multiple pages.
#42 | Aaron | March 22nd, 2006 at 13:47
Geoffrey-
Box.net will be offering webdav support in a matter of weeks. We also have a desktop sync program coming out – so you can automatically have your latest files available in your box.net or netvibes account.
#43 | Rikostan | March 22nd, 2006 at 13:53
I have been using the box.net module for a few weeks now and even signed up for the 5 gig account. Love the idea and while it could use some more tweaks, the implementation is pretty decent for the first showing.
Nice work!
#44 | Unleaded | March 22nd, 2006 at 14:09
NIce, it works great. The only missing thing, is a search field, in order to find quickly our files
#45 | Michael | March 22nd, 2006 at 15:15
Nice module, didn’t know box.net before, its features look great! One thing though: it doesn’t seem to work if your e-mail address contains a ‘+’ (e.g. when using gmail).
#46 | Johannes | March 22nd, 2006 at 15:23
Danke für die großartige Arbeit!
#47 | Kasper | March 22nd, 2006 at 15:27
Nice feature!
The ability to play mp3s from netvibes is really great, but would be even more so, if you added the possibillity to play entire albums of mp3s.
for example you could make a special "music folder" which you could press play on, and then it would play all the music within. That would be a great way to always have your favorite cds on you
#48 | Julien C. | March 22nd, 2006 at 15:54
Simply fantastic, netvibes is far of the most personal page setvice available on Internet! Thanks for all!
#49 | mike arauz | March 22nd, 2006 at 16:17
this sounds great.
you know what i’d love to see added to this? RSS feeds for certain folders. this would be a great way to distribute podcasts. just upload the file to a box.net folder, and syndicate it to anywhere you like.
keep up the great work.
thanks.
#50 | Maxime | March 22nd, 2006 at 16:20
Hmmm I have a strange bug with this module. If i add a .ppt file, when i download it with opera 9 it’s downloaded as a .doc file. Works fine with firefox and IE. Just checker and it’s doing the same thing on the box.net website. Weird.
#51 | Tom | March 22nd, 2006 at 16:21
Anyone have this working with a 5 Gig paid account yet?
Also to #21 Direct links are available via public share (upgraded account feature)
to #23 Files can be 10megs and if you get the 5 friend upgrade it’s for a year.
to #24 multiple file upgrade is available 2 ways JAVA app drag and drop and multiple file select via Flash.
#52 | Aaron | March 22nd, 2006 at 16:41
Tom, or anyone else having difficulties – shoot me an email at aaron@box.net and I can see if there is a specific reason the module isn’t working for your account. Maxime – the mimetype settings we’re using is a bit off, this is being fixed.
#53 | Astro Boy | March 22nd, 2006 at 16:49
Bravo !

Thank you for the wonderful new module. It is extremely useful. I will second the requests for a refresh button, a delete button, as well as the "play folder" option for the MP3’s. That would be fabulous. All in all though, this is very solid. Thank you.
#63 | stuart | March 23rd, 2006 at 00:10
PROBLEM FIXED!!!
@jekyl (comment 52) – you’re right, the module doens’t work with special characters in your password. I had an exclamation mark in mine and it just sat there with a "Loading" message. I changed my password on the box.net site and now it works perfectly. I’ll update my blog entrty to reflect this fix: beta.amanzi.co.nz/2006/03…
Cheers – Stuart
#64 | Sinaptik | March 23rd, 2006 at 00:51
@Astro Boy
#65 | roto | March 23rd, 2006 at 02:17
Box.net integration is great! Now, we just have to keep netvibes from being purchased by Google (who’ll inevitably make it "less cool")…then all will be right with this here Interweb. Viva Netvibes!
Now…about that much needed DELETE link…
#66 | shinynew | March 23rd, 2006 at 03:02
GOOD LORD PEOPLE!
this isnt a netvibes exculsive, you, supriseingly enough, can go to box.net and use things such as delete, and multiple uploading and even drag and drop. You can do it netvibes doesnt have to do it for you
#67 | JesseJstreet | March 23rd, 2006 at 03:18
Thanks shinynew… took the words right out of my…uhm… fingers. Great addition Netvibes! I love the service!

Anyone else been experiencing wierd issues with Netvibes today. Throughout the day I have been getting someone else’s page (2 different users).
Luckily, neither of their Gmail account modules worked while I was viewing their pages but but this is still a bit freaky.
Just for the record. At least one of the appeared to be out of the country… Or at least the default weather they track was.
Any ideas about what’s happening?
#69 | Skor | March 23rd, 2006 at 04:20
#70 | Scottie | March 23rd, 2006 at 05:37

"building a web 2.0 service ecosystem"
Why not choose a service then that is platform independent?
#72 | xabi | March 23rd, 2006 at 10:04
Car moi j’utilise uniquement l’interface netvibes…
Continuer !
#73 | Astro Boy | March 23rd, 2006 at 11:29
@ Sinaptik
:]
Encore désolé. Bye.

Can anybody from netvives tell us more about the problem from comment #66
#75 | John | March 23rd, 2006 at 14:31
Sorry, I also forgot to mention that it’s a great tool and that we want tabs
#76 | Gedas | March 23rd, 2006 at 15:30
A link in the module that logs you into your account on box.net site would solve most of the requests.
#77 | JesseJstreet | March 23rd, 2006 at 16:03
I’m also interested in hearing an answer on comment #66. Netvibes? Anyone?
#78 | hensleyjh | March 23rd, 2006 at 16:30
An Update to Comment #66
It is still happening today. I emailed netvibes more details and screenshots. Hopefully, we’ll hear something soon.
#79 | Zek | March 23rd, 2006 at 18:09
Ok… Now, with a functionnality like this, how we can use another homepage/portal system ? Live.com and others are definitely far away… I can throw my usb-key to garbage. Thx Netvibes.
#80 | Nick | March 23rd, 2006 at 19:28
I want the tabs, play button, delete, link to login to box.net module, drag and drop files, select multiple files, et. al. But what about security? I know that Box.net is working on a SSL version of their site. How will that work when uploading files in through Netvibes. I’m new to Netvibes and Box.net….I like both; but am very concerned with security.

This feature .. has more problems than it’s worth.
On linux .. the hidden files aren’t opened by the "File" button.
So if you have any files/.directories with . in front of them .. sorry .. you’ll have a tough time.
How great it is to create files and not be able to delete anything?
I guess you fill up your 1G .. then you ask for 5G and get a delete button
)

WoW really nice Box.net. I am really enjoying this future.
#100 | Dex | March 27th, 2006 at 14:05
You should rename the options at the bottom to "Create Folder" and "Upload File", right now you’d think that you could upload both files and folders. Speaking of that, multiple file upload to Box.net via the Netvibes API would be sweet…
#101 | Daniel | March 27th, 2006 at 16:24
If the email has a +, the module stays "loading".
an email as myname+netvibes@gmail.com make the module fail.
I hope you’ll fix it.
#102 | runemail | March 27th, 2006 at 16:34
The mp3 player is the best feature so far on netvibes (box.net)! 1gb of free strage for mp3 and files is just brilliant.
Puts you ahead of the competition right now.

1 GB storage size & 10 Mo maximum size is a very good start…

The future is in your hands…

This module is nice BUT how do I delete a file from Netvibes? No way! I have to go on box.net to do it.

Funny, I created a "test" folder and went into it. Then I upload a file BUT appears on root folder, not on "test" folder.

I’d like to see Java auto encryption plugins for box.net. Just select a java plugin in the edit menu and that’s it, the extention takes care of the rest.

Keep on the good work !
