Netvibes unveils Social Widgets and its next release called Ginger

Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about OpenSocial. As launch partners we agree that it’s really a good initiative but it doesn’t answer the main question: What about the application container?
Will Developers have to code several versions of their Apps using different containers depending on the platform?

So that’s why we have decided that the moment the technology matures, to include all the existing Social APIs as plugins for UWA, our Universal Widget API.

To add, we want to share with you 2 cool videos demonstrating some of the social features in our next release called “Ginger”. The videos provide examples of how Netvibes allows you to follow content and widgets that your friends want to share with you. You’ll also see some examples of social widgets created using the Social APIs.

disappointing (in relation to ginger). these seem to be trivial social features that don’t play to the real potential of the netvibes proposition, and that are essentially just facebook-esque copycat efforts. i’m hoping that there’s much more to ginger than is shown here. i want to see netvibes creating communities of interest around content (i.e. when users are connected by using the same content), applying collective knowledge in terms of highlighting other content that you might be interested in based on your content usage, and providing tools that help you to see what content is most valuable to you based on your usage of the feeds that you have installed (amongst other things). so underwhelmed, but still a loyal netvibes user.

focus on where there’s real value, as opposed to just mirroring stuff that’s already been done elsewhere. start pages can be social, and the social functionality can be highly valuable, but just trying to replicate the functionality of social networks is not the way to achieve this (unless the objective is just to become a social network, which would be disappointing, as the potential is so much greater).
