Netvibes now fully integrated with Google Search

A lot of you have asked for a way to fully integrate search within Netvibes. Today, we are really happy to bring you a new feature that will allow you to perform complete Google searches within your Netvibes page and have the results appear right in its own new tab. Since the beginning of the Web, people have constantly debated between starting via a homepage or by going to a search portal. Now you can have the best of both worlds, by accessing the full power of search without ever having to leave your personalized Netvibes page. Your widgets, feeds and friends will always be close at hand while you perform life’s daily searches, and you can save your results for as long as you’d like.

Nothing to do on your end: the search field will appear automatically on your page starting today. And since Netvibes is, as always, fully customizable you’ll be able to select a few options to make this new tool your very own!
Let me walk you through those easily configurable options:

Position
The search field can be positioned above or below the page title or you can even hide it if you don’t like the feature. But if you love this option as much as we do and replace your page title with a simple search bar, just uncheck the “display title” option.
Results
Every search result will by default open in a new Netvibes tab so you can easily compare, track or save different results. If you don’t like this behavior you can configure it so the results always show in the same tab. Now you can keep you search within your netvibes and switch, with a single click, between all result categories: Video, Blog, News, Images, Books…
Universes
The search engine can also be displayed on your public page but you’ll have to manually activate it since we didn’t want to break your existing designs. You can even create a tab which does a search on your name or company like I did on our own: http://www.netvibes.com/netvibes
Localization
Searches are performed on Google.com but we respect the local content configured on your Netvibes so you’ll always have results which suits the best your country. In the future we’ll add more search engines so you’ll be able to switch between them to have your prefered local provider.
Lastly, we wanted to give a quick shout out to the Google Search team. They’ve just been great to work with. Merci!
We’d love to hear your feedback, to please leave some thoughts in the comments once you play with our new features.

It’s taking up too much space.
#2 | Dylan Parry | June 30th, 2008 at 09:24
How are you supposed to configure this new feature? Clicking on the Google logo, as the tooltip suggested, in both Firefox 3 and IE7 doesn’t seem to do anything when I try…
#3 | Dylan Parry | June 30th, 2008 at 09:27
Ah never mind. A full refresh of the page caused the options to appear in the "settings -> general settings" panel. That said, clicking the logo still doesn’t seem to do what it said it would do.
#4 | Chris | June 30th, 2008 at 09:30
Thanks, but its not very useful for me. I have Google search in my browser. I was freaking out until I found the hide function.
Most netvibes users go to great lengths to fit as much on one tab as possible. We tune our RSS feeds and arranging stuff so they all fit and look nice. Having that search bar means too much wasted space.
I do hope you are getting a kick back from Google. In that regard I think its a good move by Netvibes, afterall Google aren’t evil (yet) :p
#5 | Bart | June 30th, 2008 at 09:43
Ok for new users this might be good to make it more like iGoogle…
But really this should be a drop-down function in the "in my page" search. Most of us probably use the browser’s search box itself but to keep them within Netvibes you could make it act like the browsers search functionality. Just making it like iGoogle … well eh I think you should differentiate and improve upon it.
Also by adding this to the "in my page" search might encourage people to use this functionality – This (in page search) btw is one of those differentiating features that make you BETTER then iGoogle.
Hope others will encourage you to make these changes as well.
#6 | Tonio | June 30th, 2008 at 09:44
Nice !
Would be better if there’s no need to validate search tabs close. With close validation it’s much longer to use than browser’s tabs.
Nice job though.
#7 | Twinside | June 30th, 2008 at 09:46
Please give an option to hide it, it’s to big (and unuseful for me)
#8 | Andrew | June 30th, 2008 at 09:54
Every modern browser already has an integrated search box, I can’t see the purpose of this for the end user.
#9 | Mickael | June 30th, 2008 at 09:54
A search around maps would have been VERY usefull for this feature.
#10 | Jan | June 30th, 2008 at 10:03
Please provide an option to hide. I have search bar in my browser and this takes too much space.
#11 | guillirojo | June 30th, 2008 at 10:03
#12 | Detour | June 30th, 2008 at 10:04
You can hide it under settings.
#13 | Martin | June 30th, 2008 at 10:16
What’s the use? Everybody has the Google search bar already in their browser. It’s just taking too much space.
#14 | Caesar | June 30th, 2008 at 10:24
Thank God there’s a hide option!!!
I wonder how many users would take the 3-4 steps to hide this uglification of netvibes?
Will the netvibes team publish this statistic in due time
Although I don’t blame them, I don’t get this? Although Mozilla/FF seem to survive almost only on Google search, netvibes’ userbase (I am assuming) are very screen-space conscious. What worked for a browser might not necessarily work for an online feed reader.
Unless…
#15 | Farny | June 30th, 2008 at 11:12
The hide option, hides the search in the page, not the Google Annoying and Redundant stuff…
Please rollback the version it is useless !!!
#16 | Keith Peters | June 30th, 2008 at 11:38
Unfortunately, I agree with others here on the main points: 1. it’s too big. 2. it’s a pain to close / "delete" the tab and confirm deletion. 3. my browser already has a superior search box. There’s not much value in this feature.
#17 | Keith Peters | June 30th, 2008 at 11:44
ok, after playing with it some more, if you choose to show it above title, it seems to take up much less space, but now seems a bit crammed in there. And the open in option is a bit misleading. open in same tab still opens a new tab, but subsequent searches keep opening up in THAT same tab. switching those two options helps a lot, but still not sure if this is better than the built in browser search.
#18 | NetEx | June 30th, 2008 at 11:55
I like it! Yes I have already a Search box in my browser but as an heavy Netvibes user, I prefer to have some of my results saved in my Netvibes page directly.
Good move!
PS:
1) would love to be able to choose my own Google site (as in your Google search widget)
2) for space conscious users a few options could be added to where to place it
#19 | tomh | June 30th, 2008 at 11:55
You need to explain clearly how to get rid of it. I had to do a full refresh of the page before the search options appeared in the Settings dialogue.
I don’t need another google search box – I’m already using Firefox. I suspect you only added this feature so that you get paid for referrals by google.
If you’re going to add more features, how enhancing the podcast playback facilities – things like fast-forward and rewind would be really handy. Plus the mobile version of netvibes needs some SERIOUS improvement! It constantly requests my password when I use it on my (admittedly crappy) Nokia. Facebook’s mobile site by comparison always works perfectly…
#20 | William | June 30th, 2008 at 11:58
I can’t stand it, sorry. a) each of the three browsers i use (Safari for windows, Firefox 3, and IE7 has a search box at the top right. This is totally superfluous. Additionally, my netvibes already has a search box!
I am presuming this comes down to REVENUE – which is fair enough, as I don’t pay anything, but i can assure you, i will neither use the box to search in (I am already perfectly happy with the browser integrated ones!) and ultimately this may well deter me from using netvibes, as this defeats the whole point of the one page structure. it takes up valuable screen-estate. please, as a compromise, consider combing the Search boxes, so that those who DO find it useful don’t loose that screen space.
#21 | Chris Osborne | June 30th, 2008 at 13:16
Yeah, I’ve hidden it as well. With FireFox there’s no reason to add another search bar. It’s already Ctrl+K to do a search no matter what else I’m doing.
#22 | Rachel Mills | June 30th, 2008 at 13:51
I do not want the Google search option where it has been placed (so I’ve hidden it). However, I do want to use the search widget that includes Google search, Yahoo Search and a couple of other search engine. But the Google option for this widget doesn’t seem to work now. Am I forced to use Google the way you want me to? I do not like lack of flexibility.
#23 | Rik | June 30th, 2008 at 14:26
+1 Useless and annoying
#24 | Jeff | June 30th, 2008 at 14:41
Another vote for useless. This sort of thing should not be a negative option – also took me forever to hide it as well since a full refresh was needed before the hide option showed up, so I didn’t go looking back in that pulldown for it for quite a while.
Announce a new feature here and tell people how to enable, not disable stuff.
#25 | Andrew | June 30th, 2008 at 14:41
Ah, ok, so the setting to hide it is NOT where I’d expect. I clicked Settings and unchecked "Display Search Area" and nothing happened!
What you have to do is click "Settings" and go to the second box "Search" and change the "Search Position" to hidden for it to hide this feature.
This could be useful but would be better as a widget instead of a big box taking up way too much space at the top. That’s what moved me from NetVibes from iGoogle in the first place. The fact that I use browser search and didn’t want a big box taking up half my screen!
#26 | mr.mike | June 30th, 2008 at 15:34
Much like what everybody else is saying, it is a massive waste of space. Perhaps you could put a big "x" in the corner to get rid of it, instead of hiding the setting in the middle of nowhere? Nothing like coming to work on Monday morning and seeing a change that gets the anger going.
#27 | simonvx | June 30th, 2008 at 15:40
How useless and annoying! I did a full reload 3 times and there’s nothing new in my settings (like, as some folks mentioned, a hide options). Please Netvibes, act quickly — this is taking up waaay too much space on my MacBook.
#28 | Vanion | June 30th, 2008 at 16:02
Where’s that fancy hide feature everybody is chatting about?
First things first: Netvibes is a great service, I really love it. But that google search bar integration is useless. At least to me.
I’ve read about some configuring options (especially switching it off) but I don’t find it. If I click on the google image, it does not open a configuration bar, just a scrolldown menu of my recent searches copied from firefox integrated search bar.
Please, switch it off. It’s that anoying.
#29 | Detour | June 30th, 2008 at 16:08
Its a bit tricky but its under search position. (Also mentioned in this newsitem about this new feature.)There you can select hidden.
#30 | bommel | June 30th, 2008 at 16:19
feature is ok and probably useful for many. i hope it helps you to monetize nv.
i would like to see two things improved:
– please do away with the black top bar. this thing is so nasty. please offer a setting to make it slide-in, display at the bottom or something like that. the space at the top is precious for the users content.
– the star features has to be enhanced a lot. i want to tag the "starred" articles and import/export them from/to a bookmarks.html file (like del.icio.us). i also would like to see a top twenty of articles which are hot now for – for each of the main languages de, en, fr and es. the slide down space is not enough for this. the star feature needs an entire page.
#31 | Discovia | June 30th, 2008 at 16:24
Good effort, but…
It really is redundant given that most browers have it integrated.
No page should have multiple search boxes. Better to integrate it into the ‘Search my page’.
Should not get a confirmation dialog to close search results tab.
The ‘More results’ link opens up a new tab directly to google. So i may as well have gone there in the 1st place.
If you really want to make this useful, then do something different. Have the option to show search results in a pane view. How about tagging search results, preview results, like Snap, etc.
As it is it’s pretty useless, so i’ll probably opt to hide for now…
#32 | L.Rawlins | June 30th, 2008 at 16:46
Terrible idea. The big three browsers offer the ability to do this sans webpage anyway.
All I do for example in Opera is type ‘g netvibes’ in my url bar to search Google for netvibes.
I’ve removed the feature entirely. Thanks but no thanks. It simply wouldn’t get used and visually took up an obscene amount of the title bar region. Knocking the actual content I care about even furthur below a scroll bar.
#33 | Jay D | June 30th, 2008 at 16:50
Agree with many of the above comments. Real estate on a site like this is crucial — losing that much to something that’s already built into firefox is a step back for me. It was also not intuitive to figure out how to remove it.
#34 | Minishlink | June 30th, 2008 at 17:00
Nice !
But it’s not shown correctly :
minishlink.lyokoproject.c…
#35 | Foo | June 30th, 2008 at 17:18
Okay… so for those of us who *don’t* use Google, when will other search engines be added to the mix??
For right now, just one more thing to switch off.
#36 | Gsnerf | June 30th, 2008 at 17:44
Really NetVibez team: WHY would someone ask for something like this? Why would someone want to have a google search bar on this page when every single modern webbrowser has exactly the same thing directly besides the address bar???
Besides the fact that this is an absolutely useless "feature" why do you only offer "google" search? What about yahoo, msn, altavista or whatever? Where is the "fully configurable" search option? …
I guess this was more a money related issue than anything userfriendly feature adding…
#37 | Ben | June 30th, 2008 at 18:04
I strongly suggest two other "show search results" options:
1. New Window
2. New FF/IE Tab
#38 | gmcle454 | June 30th, 2008 at 18:20
HOW DO I HIDE THE DAMN THING?
If i wanted a Google start page, I’d use iGoogle! I use netvibes because the don’t do stupid stuff like take up a ton of room at the top of my start page–well until now that is. Guess i’m stuck till I find something else or it can be turned off.
#39 | calway | June 30th, 2008 at 18:50

#40 | me | June 30th, 2008 at 19:18
hidden, thank you for the tip.
#41 | shyster | June 30th, 2008 at 19:18
What’s next? Advertisements? This, especially after the non-improvements brought by Ginger and the fact that my iframes modules haven’t worked in two days, is very disappointing.
#42 | Parker | June 30th, 2008 at 19:27
I think it’s pretty rad. Having it show "Above" the title made it take up less space (though now it seems just a tiny bit squished), but the process of "deleting" the Google search results tab always makes me do a double-take.
Just a few tweaks and it’ll be great. Replace my ‘Web Search’ widget for sure,
#43 | Jean-marie | June 30th, 2008 at 19:28
Super fonctionnalité,merci et bravo netvibes, du bon boulot en tout cas ! …
#44 | Kdhuk | June 30th, 2008 at 19:30
Netvibes has to gain revenue from somewhere – better this than a future immovable advertising module??
A suggestion – if searches are to open in the same tab each time then the tab should be named "Google" rather than "Google -search subject" – this has privacy issues as the search subject is recorded as the tab name even if search is then cleared.
If the search tab is completely closed then Netvibes should return to the first tab rather than the last?
The "confirm deletion" should be removed also
How are previous searches cleared?
Google search in the original websearch module no longer works – coincidence or deliberate?
Please add other search engines soon with localized versions eg Yahoo.co.uk was never an option in the UK for the Web search module
Otherwise keep up the good work!!!
#45 | Amanda | June 30th, 2008 at 20:24
Thank you! This saves me the hassle of keeping a separate Google search homepage.
#46 | Martin | June 30th, 2008 at 20:41
what happened to the line height in the headline boxes? It seems the distance went from 1.5 to 1.0 or something and it really annoys me.
(this happens since today, XP, Firefox 3)
#47 | enough | June 30th, 2008 at 20:47
please simply remove this google thing
#48 | remifasol | June 30th, 2008 at 21:11
It’s way too big!
And I think if you want a quick way to use google, the toolbar in Firefox, IE or any other software should do the trick…
#49 | Bauer | June 30th, 2008 at 21:21
Thanks for the option to remove this. I’m with most people, it’s rather redundant however as long as there’s an ‘off’ button, I’m sure most people will deal with it!
#50 | un.named | June 30th, 2008 at 22:08
I prefer to use the toolbar in my browser, so I too have used the hide option. I agree it is too big, not really necessary, and should be more customizable (as to position) for those who may want to keep it.
#51 | justME | June 30th, 2008 at 23:24
BANG! … just hidden the uglyfication. don’t like it, never will use it.
#52 | Lee | July 1st, 2008 at 01:25
Thank you for the great addition. Just to have the results within Netvibes is a huge plus for me.
#53 | 'son | July 1st, 2008 at 01:29
Yo, I don’t think that the implementation of this functionality was particularly good. I also started freaking out when I first saw the Google search box. I couldn’t figure out how to make it go away (it takes up too much room). It wasn’t until I thought to check the blog that I began to calm down. I’m really happy that the feature was added, but the implementation could have been less intrusive.
#54 | Régis | July 1st, 2008 at 02:01
#55 | Tony | July 1st, 2008 at 02:37
I use Netvibes every day and I immediately turned this feature off because I search with my browser (Firefox).
#56 | Johan | July 1st, 2008 at 09:51
Let this be known; I love netvibes.
And now you piss me off with this ugly searchfield, why?
I don’t need this on my startpage.
I tought the idea was to let me build my own startpage.
why?
#57 | Maradona | July 1st, 2008 at 11:26
Most of comments are negative in regards or googlesearch addin. So who asked netvibes to implement this stupid solution? Google?
#58 | William | July 1st, 2008 at 11:27
I should follow up with
a) thanks for having an option to hide it. That, to me, is a key bonus. I appreciate it! Credit where credit is due. Many wouldnt have that option.
b) I realise you dont want people hiding it, for revenue purposes, but I really do think the "hide" option should be more obvious. It’s not really a "position" issue.
#59 | Kdhuk | July 1st, 2008 at 11:36
It’s disappointingly using Google.com in the UK – Google.co.uk would be better!
#60 | Peter | July 1st, 2008 at 13:11

#62 | drvono | July 1st, 2008 at 15:50
*phew* glad I can hide it
#63 | Dan Grossman | July 1st, 2008 at 15:54
Mmhmm. It’s easy to turn off, while making it on by default will lead to search revenue for Netvibes. Considering how data intensive this amazing application is, I’m all for them finding way to monetize it and run it at a profit. I want Netvibes to be around for years, not just until the VC funding runs out.
#64 | J.D. | July 1st, 2008 at 21:50
Thanks for making it hideable, even if the option to hide it is hidden….
#65 | Gillian | July 2nd, 2008 at 09:16
Oh, so much complaining!! I think it’s brilliant. No more closing a tab by mistake, only to find I’ve lost my search. I love it.
#66 | Lurcherjohn | July 2nd, 2008 at 11:22
Settings>Search position>hidden (drop down) removes it.
1) Annoying having to close tab with confirmation
2) Takes up space
3) Google for UK not available.
#67 | fraNcesco | July 2nd, 2008 at 13:04
Traditional google search widget doesn’t work.
Please solve it.

I can’t install the Add2netvibes plugin for firefox 3.0.
When I click on the green Install button on your web page, it leads me to a new page (the xpi file) that says "Error 404".
I’m not the only one who has got this problem, so please, FIX IT !
I NEED to download this plugin right now, or else my family, my dog, my green plant, my grandma, bruce springsteen and britney spears are all going to DIE !!

I have never asked for it and deactivating it in the settings doesn’t do anything, it just stays where it is.
#76 | jp | July 4th, 2008 at 09:54
Too much space. We don’t need google search here. I don’t think the feature has been requested by many people. This is only a way to monetize your plateform, don’t think your users are dumb.

#78 | Shona | July 4th, 2008 at 19:39
This is worse than useless! I live in France but am English-speaking – if I type "Bristol airport" it’s because I’ve chosen to search in English, as French sites are unlikely to have the info I need. So when all I get are English pages "translated" into French …like I say, worse than useless!! And my Google search widget has suddenly stopped working. never mind, as several others have pointed out, there’s always my navigator tool bar.

#80 | FEATURE REQUEST | July 5th, 2008 at 13:35
Hi Netvibes Team!
When I want to mark all feeds on a tab read, I always have to acknowledge that. This is very annoying. Can you make this acknowledge message optional, please?
I’d also like to have a small refresh button, which refreshes all tabs without reloading the entire window.
These two features would make Netvibes even better!
Thanks!
#81 | goblogging | July 8th, 2008 at 14:10
Yups, Netvibes has become even better
really simple and save my time in browsing the assembled contents
#82 | Dean | July 9th, 2008 at 22:16
Pointless. Please make it go away. I am perfectly capable of going to Google if I need too.
#83 | Quikboy | July 10th, 2008 at 04:45
Why the heck is it Google, and not other choices like Ask, Live Search, Yahoo!, or any other search engines?
Not everybody uses Google you know. I think it’s a bit unfair that the Netvibes team chooses to toss in Google search, without giving us other search engine options. It’s not a wonder why Google search gets results top-ranked, site developers keep putting in Google by default, so that more and more people can get sucked into Google’s monopoly and power their search engine.
After all, search engines are powered when people click link after link. If other search engines had fair game, they’d probably be as great, if not better than Google.
At least there’s a hide option. I thought Netvibes was suppose to be cool about letting users customize as much as they want, without being associated to ONE particular company to push their content in front of us.
So much for that. You do know that iGoogle is in competition with you guys, right?
#84 | kdhuk | July 13th, 2008 at 15:26
Good to see the original Web Search module working again – would be great to see a Yahoo.co.uk search option and Live.co.uk – the Live search is currently only in French
#85 | Jeff | July 13th, 2008 at 22:26
Even when ‘hidden’ its a pain. I use a comics module that displays comics when I hover over the title of the comic – if the comic is large, it will display above that – and then gets chopped in the middle by the ‘hidden’ google search or whatever it is that hides it. This was just broken (rushed?) disfunctionality.

Too much space. We don’t need google search here. I don’t think the feature has been requested by many people. This is only a way to monetize your plateform, don’t think your users are dumb.

Really nice and useful idea, but the implementation isn´t as good as I first expected…it takes too much room and all the new browser already have a google search-bar or something like that…anyway, don´t mind. I love your blog and all your ideas, suggestions and tips. Go on.
