Netvibes new features review

Netvibes is coming with a set of new requested features !

You already know that there are keyboard shortcuts now, but there is more.

First, your tabs can have their own layout with a different column number for each. This setting can be changed in the redesigned tab option menu or with the new keyboard shortcuts 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Second, your account login is displayed (at the top right of the screen) so you always know what was the e-mail address you used for Netvibes.

Your account displayed

By clicking on it, you will be able to change your password and enter additional information about yourself.

Changing your information

Finally, some bugs were fixed in the iCal module and the subscription system has been improved to support iCal and HTML API autodetection.

All theses improvements were made possible thanks to your feedback, so keep sending us your impressions !

please add a module for Yodlee

  2. #2 | LM | June 2nd, 2006 at 20:33

    Thanks! Great improvements!

But my Agenda on my ical module is starting on 15/5, not today… =/

  3. #3 | Wendy | June 2nd, 2006 at 20:44

I use Yodlee too! I second adding a module for it.

  4. #4 | Inbal | June 2nd, 2006 at 21:05

Same as LM, the dates are off on the Agenda display. The days are a nice touch.

  5. #5 | Darryn van der Walt | June 2nd, 2006 at 21:08

    Thanks for the updates.

I have the same problem as above with the Agenda view of the calendar – it’s displaying events from the 12/5.
It used to work before the upgrade.

  6. #6 | Diogo Serra | June 2nd, 2006 at 21:18

It would be great if ical support add events and have one link direct to google calendar.

  7. #7 | cc | June 2nd, 2006 at 21:40

    Good work Netvibes, loving it.
A question – is there a way to get rid of the solid box line around each module? I thought we had that option a month or so ago.
    thanks

    Bonjour.
    Merci pour Netvibes.
Impossible de mettre à jour mon profil avec mon vrai nom dans le champ Fullname en raison de l’accent non supporté.

  10. #10 | Ron | June 2nd, 2006 at 22:41

I see no changes to the iCal Viewer. It still will not show the event name of all day events.

  11. #11 | Guido | June 2nd, 2006 at 22:55

is there a feature requests section?

Anyway, personally I’d like the option added to the "link »" tag that takes you to a new window/tab for the full story.

The option I’d like is to open that page directly in the popup dhtml div, so I can read the whole page in the div rather than a new window.

  12. #12 | Willy | June 2nd, 2006 at 23:23

iCal viewer still has bugs. It still shows some of my events on the wrong days. (I have a 7-8pm CST event for this Sunday but it’s showing on the Monday [next day] block). I have past events that are like this still as well.

    @cc
you can remove a module`s border with Netvibes Customize module — look for it in modules, it`s somewhere on top.

Actually, I`ve got a question myself. I`ve asked it a million times, but never recieved an answer.

Guys. Is there any way to use Ajax.Updater instead of Ajax.PeriodicalUpdater in your rss module? Now I can`t stay on netvibes all the time, it generates too much traffic. I don`t want to close netvibes each time I`ve checked one of my lots-of-feeds tabs, but I have to: it continues to update and update and update…
This is even more ridiculous as some of rss feeds actually update once a week or rarer.

  14. #14 | cc | June 3rd, 2006 at 01:04

    @sp
Thanks for the answer, sorry I can’t help you with your question

Support for Hebrew & Arabic, i.e. right-to-left alignment, would be great. Feed boxes should be configurable for RTL so that Hebrew and Arabic news feeds will not be difficult to read. Also, the feed reader should support RTL.
    Regardless, netvibes is fantastic!

  16. #16 | Daniel | June 3rd, 2006 at 03:56

I agree with sp. Netvibes is generating way too much traffic, wich makes is ok if you only have a few feeds, not my gazillion feeds.

Plus, and this is clearly a bug, sometimes it starts updating all the feeds in an endless cycle until I close it down. I’ve seen other people complain about this, and you should make it a priority of fixing this.

Still a great site, keep up the good work!

  17. #17 | granny | June 3rd, 2006 at 04:51

The updates are marvelous as always. However, my browser (IE6) no longer controls the text size. Is there another way to increase the size of text? These old eyes tire quickly reading tiny type.

  18. #18 | Mark Wheeler | June 3rd, 2006 at 13:42

Can I just ask what the advantage of entering extra profile information is?

  19. #19 | AnA-l | June 3rd, 2006 at 14:26

hum, nothing really important i think, just in case, btw, you don’t enter a lot of information :)

For a few screenshots of what available and possible with netvibes, just loook around here : jbriguet.free.fr/Divers/I…

(and excuse my poor script, still not compatible with php5…)

  20. #20 | cc | June 3rd, 2006 at 20:02

    @AnA-l
Screenshots are great. That’s more like I’d like my Netvibes to look.
    cc

  21. #21 | Rodrigo Reis | June 4th, 2006 at 15:07

I can´t "sign in". The message Carregando… (loading…) don´t change (to login and pass boxes)

  22. #22 | AnA-l | June 5th, 2006 at 10:09

@cc : just add the customize module, it change the netvibes interface from something simple, to sthing wonderfull :)
    then, find modules, rss, stuff.
(all my modules come from ecosystem)

  23. #23 | pdw63 | June 5th, 2006 at 10:52

ICal module is improving but still doesn’t show all day events, as noted by Ron.

Birthdays and anniversarys (created using the 30 Boxes feature) do appear but the mouseover popup is empty – these are all-day repeating events with a note.

Lastly, if you click the refresh button on the module header there isn’t any indication that the refresh is in progress. An "Updating…" message would be useful.

Thanks to all the people working on netvibes. Keep up the good work.

  24. #24 | Diogo Serra | June 5th, 2006 at 10:55

    @ pdw63
created using the 30 Boxes feature what feature is that? thanks

  25. #25 | pdw63 | June 5th, 2006 at 15:15

    @Diogo
When you enter an event into the 30 Boxes (www.30boxes.com) calendar app it recognises certain words (eg birthday and anniversary) and gives you additional options to make the entry repeating and/or specify the start date. The resulting entry causes the problems I mentioned in my original post.

  26. #26 | LL | June 5th, 2006 at 20:23

    hello,

I lost one tab this morning !!!!

I launch netvibes.com today, and what did I see ?
My "general" tab is missing !!!
    WTF !?

I didn’t delete it, I’m sure of that
(and even If I deleted it, all the module are supposed to go to another tab)

Here, I have no tab, and all the modules inside it are GONE !!!

    Is there any backup ?
Can I retrieve my data ?

    please answer me !
I have important data in a webnote applet !

I’m asking for a feature : import/export in order to prevent something like this !!!

    thx

    LL.

  27. #27 | ThomasB | June 6th, 2006 at 00:00

Could you please add a del.icio.us button to the window which shows the feed teaser (after you click on a feed item) ? Should be easy enough to implement.

Sometimes I want to tag feed items to read the blog later. Another alternative would be an option to save feed items in netvibes (like Google Reader etc does).

  28. #28 | ThomasB | June 6th, 2006 at 10:32

Also an ical viewer for several icals (several Google Calendars) would be nice.

And RSS viewer for password protected feeds.

  29. #29 | ThomasB | June 6th, 2006 at 10:40

ALSO… what about a wap version of each users netvibes account ? Like Google Reader has. Then I could check out my feeds and read them on my mobile phone as well. This is essential in the future.

  30. #30 | ThomasB | June 6th, 2006 at 10:45

Super-also… what about the possibility to send a tab to other users or share tabs with selected users instead of all ? It’s not always desirable to show everyone what feeds you’re watching, and you may want to share your icals feed only with trusted users.

  31. #31 | Bart | June 6th, 2006 at 17:39

I seem not to be able to change my column layout in the setting window any more. Is it just me?

  32. #32 | ChoiZ | June 6th, 2006 at 21:28

Cool now we can show our account name :)

I have 2 account on netvibes and i don’t know how reconise and now it’s ok when the mail is displayed :)

  33. #33 | cc | June 6th, 2006 at 22:08

    @ ChoiZ
click on the down arrow on the right edge of the ‘tab’ to change columns now.

sorry, but have some serious problems with netvibes – and no answer from your support.

    1. I cannot read protected posts in livejournal (digest) – the API enabled feed just won’t start

    2. I cannot import an OPML with my livejournal friends – it simply won’t add…

*I would also like to be able to export OPML from netvibes….

    3. I can’t read delicious bookmarks in cyrillic!

  35. #35 | eugene | June 7th, 2006 at 11:08

    3 is solved. thanks!

  36. #36 | GianLuca | June 7th, 2006 at 11:32

    Eugene,
You can export OPML from Netvibes :
Add content >My feeds > Export to OPML

  37. #37 | Deol | June 7th, 2006 at 19:31

Looks great and runs great. Keep up the great work!

  38. #38 | Willy | June 7th, 2006 at 20:41

How hard would it be to make a module where I can view, compose, send, delete and sort my email? Could be almost any providor, I don’t care. Yahoo, Hotmail, anything. Would be awesome to never have to leave Netvibes!!!!!!

  39. #39 | Wazoo | June 7th, 2006 at 20:49

    Salut,

    Hi,

first, thanks for the efficient service that Netvibes is.
Just an idea: could there be an archiving of the feeds (as Google do for search) to be abble to find again a post or a info that’s no more in the 5 or 6 items displayed by feeds?

    wazoo

  40. #40 | rodrigo diniz | June 7th, 2006 at 22:42

Hi is there any plan to make possible to export favorites?
Any api to access then outside netvibes?
    thanks for the updates !

  41. #41 | Wazoo | June 8th, 2006 at 00:54

    re-

et serait-il possible d’exporter ses preferences (config, flux, etc…) pour sauvegarder sa config? juste au cas ou il y ait des pertes sur le serveur de netvibes…

    hi,

could it be possible to export settings (feeds, config.. etc) to save prefernces?
just if Netvibes server lose somethings…

There is a small problem with gmail module when used to check an account which uses "gmail for your domain:http://www.google.com/hosted/&qu... service. I configured it for myself by entering my full email address and it could check for new email and display the list. But when I click on an email to view it ,it redirects to a not-found page on google web site (perhaps because page address is not a correct one for this service).

  44. #44 | eugene | June 8th, 2006 at 11:02

sorry – a qyestion about gmail:

does it connect via SSL? Am I giving my pass to netvibes too, or only to google? :)

the only really big problem is to read livejournal protected posts via netvibes…

  46. #46 | Tariq KRIM | June 8th, 2006 at 13:08

Hi to every one, blogs won’t be the place where we can do support. You really need to use the feedback button in the botton of the page to report (precisely, don’t work is not enough) your pb so we can replicate it and correct it if needed.

  47. #47 | lbcd78 | June 8th, 2006 at 21:15

could it be possible to choose the number of colonne by tab?

  48. #48 | granny | June 8th, 2006 at 23:46

Coooool… for a couple of minutes there, I had somewhere else’s bookmarks on my page. It’s fixed now apparently, but I had fun investigating the links of a fellow sudoku fan!

Maybe netvibes should do this on purpose, now and then? LOL

I love Netvibes, and I’ll stay right here on the bleeding edge with you. Bless you all.

  49. #49 | Titus | June 9th, 2006 at 09:01

The shortcut "Ctrl+N" to open a new window doesn’t work anymore then !

  50. #50 | BenTremblay | June 9th, 2006 at 13:46

Fabulous *No email on my page!* really … I’ve tried so many different systems, and thought about this stuff so long *Web2.0 as though Web2.0 really works!*

I sure hope the login problem clears … I get my page, without EMail display … and cannot log in … but all changes work, except for Modules (Adding them requires login, for some odd reason.) so I’m ok, but …

No email display … no password recovery or login … coincidence?

    cheers
    ben

  51. #51 | Christopher | June 10th, 2006 at 01:24

We need something like this for netvibes: http://www.google.com/ig/add?mod...

There is a soccer module for netvibes but it is not specifically for the world cup and it’s pretty lousy anyway.

  52. #52 | Twisterss | June 10th, 2006 at 11:59

    @Christopher :
    perhaps this one :
    eco.netvibes.com/modules/…

  53. #53 | Christopher | June 10th, 2006 at 13:12

that’s the slightly crappy one i meant. just compare it to google’s. i’d rather see more world cup information instead of south american soccer scores.

  54. #54 | mike | June 10th, 2006 at 20:26

reply to post 38: pageflakes just introduced that feature. i am sure netvibes will add it soon too.

  55. #55 | Lu | June 12th, 2006 at 20:39

    Can’t login neither… :(

  56. #56 | cc | June 12th, 2006 at 22:04

I would also like a better weather module.
Would anyone know how to get this weather –
    weather.msn.com/local.asp…
to work on Netvibes please? It’s actually the weather from ‘live.com’ but I don’t want to use ‘live.com’, Netvibes is much better.
I tried "add content – add my feed" but all I get is 2 text links to click on. Doesn’t show as test and graphics as it does on live.com
    Thanks to anyone reading this.

This is very odd, I liked Netvibes from the day one, and after 1 year or so, I still find it very nice and fresh.

  59. #59 | BenTremblay | June 12th, 2006 at 23:33

My email still doesn’t display as in your screenshot … not at all.

And I still can’t login … or get password / username feedback. Which means I cannot install modules (though I can modify my destop and add feeds … go figure).

Still: a gorgeous system … love it … hope to login someday!

Hi, I love Netvibes but I can´t sign in. When I click on it a small window opens and says it´s loading but it never really loads the Profile box.
    I access Netvibes from Brazil.

  77. #77 | Pedro Paulo | June 24th, 2006 at 19:07

Attention to all people that can’t login on Netvibes:

The pt-BR (I don’t know about the others) localization has a bug, witch don’t allow you to login, to correct that, go in the footer and click in "English". This will change the interface to English, with this you will be able to login with no problems.

Uh… I’ve searched this setting for the number of columns for hours!?!?? The position of this settings menu is pretty stupid if you ask me! :/ Thanks a lot!
Now who of you knows how to remove an icon once you’ve selected one for a tab??

  79. #79 | granny | June 27th, 2006 at 12:25

    @Andy

With the tab active, select the tiny down arrow (it appears under the tiny x) on the right edge of the active tab. You can change the column layout and icon from there.

  80. #80 | Lu | June 28th, 2006 at 22:39

It seems the login problem with pt-BR users is solved. I was able to login today, without change the language option. Just don’t know if Netvibes is enough trustworthy now…

Parece que o problema de login com os usuários pt-BR está resolvido. Consegui logar hoje sem alterar a opção de idioma. Só não sei se o Netvibes é suficientemente confiável agora…

Since yesterday I have a very annoying problem with netvibes. It keeps me asking for username and password of preview.netvibes.com although i use the regular http://www.netvibes.com. This problem makes using the site nearly impossible. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem as 86. Seems to be related to the tabs icons.

  89. #89 | Joshua | July 9th, 2006 at 13:32

Luckily there’s an active communtiy around! ;-)

  90. #90 | Amar0k | July 9th, 2006 at 16:31

    Seems to be fixed. :)

  91. #91 | ph | July 9th, 2006 at 19:29

I agree with eugene (87) about having a mobile version for phones/pdas – also it could start out as a massively simplified version. The only thing taking me back to Google homepage is that if I read my rss on my pda it is marked read when I log onto the desktop version. A mobile netvibes would be great!

  92. #92 | Christopher | July 9th, 2006 at 21:10

    Yeah, it’s fixed :>

  93. #93 | Tom | July 11th, 2006 at 09:57

Great page! I’m new to the whole Netvibes thing.

One thing, When the div opens with the story from the rss feed, it would be nice to see a ‘next / previous’ link to go to the next story in the feed.

  94. #94 | Kirk | July 11th, 2006 at 21:38

I would really LOVE to see a forum for Netvibes where people can discuss topics such as feature requests, module development, etc.

  95. #95 | AnA-l | July 12th, 2006 at 10:02

    i agree a mort !
seting up a forum would be great, in conjonction with the ecosystem.
(i’m ready to moderate it if needed)
Just think to sections like :
    – Netvibes General
    – Netvibes Requests
    – Netvibes Bugs
    – Netvibes Ecosystem (rss infos, request for a known rss, Modules, Modules Development)
    – Last but not least : a Bar ;)

  96. #96 | Amar0k | July 12th, 2006 at 17:36

Alright! A Bar! Now we’re talking!

  97. #97 | Filipe | July 14th, 2006 at 14:48

what about beeing able to delete the account if you don’t like or don’t want it anymore?

I belive many people don’t sign up at netvibes.com due to this limitation.

  98. #98 | shean | July 14th, 2006 at 19:09

Hi guys I’ve just find here and use your fantastic tool and I’m failing in love with it.
but just one thing bothers me, and that’s i cant arrange feeds to right to left.
I’m Iranian and you know Persian language is from right to left. can you do any thing about it, please?

  101. #101 | matt | July 16th, 2006 at 07:40

is there any talk about the site remembering your password so you don’t have to type it in everytime?

  102. #102 | paul | July 16th, 2006 at 20:01

WTF? I got this web note "message" that makes me wonder about security..!

"Oh, and I thought we had lost you Working man.

    Working today are we?

Hey, I’ve been asking you questions for weeks but you haven’t responded. Avoidance appears to be a large factor in your efforts here. At least as much as the distorted.

Hey, how are all those apprentices holding up?"

How secure is the nv system? anyone else had problems? very confused here.

  103. #103 | paul | July 16th, 2006 at 20:02

Or.. is this a default/example note?

    help! :-P

  105. #105 | Mike | July 18th, 2006 at 22:35

Well, I finally created a Pageflakes page. I’ve been waiting over a month for a fix for the del.icio.us feeds, sent feedback numerous times (no reply), and no feedback forum. I really loved Netvibes and used it since it launched. I thought the ecosystem idea was pretty cool too, was even working on my own module. Without the delicious feeds though, it’s not worth it for me.

  106. #106 | flexeril | July 18th, 2006 at 22:38

Hmm… very interesting thought but I’am not agree for 100%…

  107. #107 | scud | July 26th, 2006 at 17:09

great site, i’m hooked on it !
But is there a chat room or a ‘forum’ where netvibes users can share their experiences and do some troubleshooting? For instance, I would like to add a background image with Netvibes Customize module but it asks me for an URL, not a file on my hard drive so I am quite confused.

Thanks again for the great job!

  108. #108 | Greg | July 28th, 2006 at 05:51

Great product, but please, please, give us a mobile version!!

  109. #109 | LFDLM | July 30th, 2006 at 11:27

J’ai perdu mon mot de passe et, étrangement, quand je demande qu’on m’en donne un autre, on me confirme l’envoi, mais je ne reçois rien… C’est très embêtant pour moi, car j’utilisais netvibes de façon très intensive.
Quelle solution peut-on me proposer ?

  110. #110 | François | August 16th, 2006 at 09:07

Pourriez-vous nous envoyer un feedback en précisant l’adresse mail que vous avez utilisé lors de votre inscription, nous allons vérifier qu’il n’y a pas d’erreurs dedans

  111. #111 | Justin | September 5th, 2006 at 18:01

I have been using netvibes for several months, but may have to switch to bloglines because of the need to coordinate my rss feeds between desktop and mobile. If netvibes introduces some kind of simple reader for mobiles, I could continue to be exclusive to netvibes!

  112. #112 | Alex | September 8th, 2006 at 06:56

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this question – I have set up an RSS feed, but the latest items appear at the end, so when I limit the number of items displayed in the box to 10, the latest items don’t appear. How do I reverse the order of the items so the latest items show on top, (like the default setting in Outlook :) ) and better still, scroll bars inside the boxes?

It seems netvibes requires that all files of an widget you want run on its page must be stored in one directory. And if you want access another file for example ‘/dir1/page.php’ from ‘dir5/here.php’ (your current directory) within netvibes you can’t if your server mod_rewrite is unactivated!!! the resulting URL looks like dir1/dir/5/here.php and netvibes throw on you an error message such as "Not valid XML…". Could anyone give some solutions or advice on it?
