Netvibes maintenance this Wednesday

In order for us to deploy the next version of Netvibes we have a big maintenance job to do next week. We’ll have to bring the site offline Wednesday 23rd of April at 4am UTC (which makes it Tuesday 22nd at 9pm PST for our users on the West Coast).

During that time we’ll update the netvibes backend to improve performances.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this might cause you and would like to thank you for your support.

@2 Good news; the universes will no longer be mandatory.. it’ll up to you to decide if you want one or not

    @3 Approximatively 4 hours… but we’ll try to do it in 3.

@4 In the blog post or in Netvibes? I don’t see any strange behavior and I checked with the support team they received no feedback on this topic so it must be only you. Try to check in your browser: View / Text Size / Normal If it doesn’t work feel free to contact us thanks to the feedback form http://www.netvibes.com/static.php?show=feedback

@5 Il you click on the link you’ll see the converted time all around the world. In Germany it’ll be 6am.

Uh.. I get the following message when I try to go to Netvibes.com

    Service Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later.

Something must be wrong or my public page got zapped-> http://www.netvibes.com/paulhern... is missing half of my information. And I can only view if I’m logged in. If I don’t login it says "The page isn’t redirecting properly". Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue. Other then that the NetVibes is the best. -paul

  6. #6 | Chad | April 22nd, 2008 at 20:18

I’m having the same problem. It says service unavailable and please try again later. Is there some maintainance going on in preparation for the big update on Wed that is causing some problems?

  7. #7 | Sam | April 22nd, 2008 at 20:55

Only 3 modules are displaying on my page and i should ave 15. Strangely, I am not receiving a service error message…

  8. #8 | Kupo | April 23rd, 2008 at 03:35

Performance appears to have improved considerably since the upgrade. Thanks guys!

  9. #9 | martinus | April 23rd, 2008 at 08:17

I hope the whole transition is doing well. It’s 9 in the morning here in Austria, and I am so used to reading the netvibes feeds at this time that I don’t know where else to look at.

  10. #10 | gaRReTT | April 23rd, 2008 at 09:26

Eheh… same here in Italy, hope it’ll be back soon, I need netvibes! : D

  11. #11 | MadJo | April 23rd, 2008 at 09:26

I indeed hope the upgrade is going fine.
It’s now almost 10.30 CET, and I still see the "upgrade screen", meaning that the upgrade is going on for about 4 and a half hours already. :)
Good luck to the Netvibes people. I can imagine it being difficult to perform this operation.

  12. #12 | hs | April 23rd, 2008 at 09:27

    still getting the ‘…currently upgrading…’ message :-(
    any end in sight?

  13. #13 | Robin Wauters | April 23rd, 2008 at 09:58

Scheduled maintenance, ok, but please don’t say 3 hours downtime maximum if it’s going to be more than 4 (and counting).

Make better estimates, and at least share information if you see you made wrong assumptions. This is really unprofessional. I know it’s a free service, but it’s common courtesy.

  14. #14 | Dickson | April 23rd, 2008 at 09:58

    I miss my NetVibes homepage… It’s just 5 hours into upgrade…

  15. #15 | P. | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:00

Seeing the same message here in Cambodia :(

how long more ? more and more impatient !

the surprises to come must be big !

  16. #16 | PaladinPup | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:10

Still nothing here in Ontario, Canada. I knew nothing about the upgrade until it all went down. I wish I would have received a notice of some sort. I would missing access to some info I need.

It says it will be up soon. But does not how long..we talking hours or days?

    PP

  17. #17 | mafeu | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:17

This is going the same way as the Ginger update a couple of weeks ago … and Robin in comment 20 is right:

If the update takes 4h, don’t say 3h (as in comment 6) with everybody shouting at you after 5h, announce 8h and everybody will be happy when you’re done in 6h. As everybody knows who has to deal with deadlines: it’s always taking twice the time as planned in the beginning.

  18. #18 | Luke | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:27

I can’t wait for the next upgrade, hopefully the ‘Drive’ functionality will work then. Can’t wait to be able to just drag and drop files into my netvibes.

  19. #19 | Eia | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:36

I’m sorry for pointing this out (again) cause I really like Netvibes, but what would happen if e.g. Google took down google.com for a couple of hours because of upgrades? In this time and age, stuff like that just isn’t acceptable imho! Can’t you let some backup servers keep the site running, albeit maybe with read-only access?

  20. #20 | NetEx | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:45

Netvibes is now back for me :)
    Thanks to all team !!

  21. #21 | fivesilver | April 23rd, 2008 at 10:51

My netvibes is back. Doesn’t appear at first glance anything special has happened, although luke (comment 23) isn’t going to be overjoyed that ‘Drive’ appears to have been taken off completely.

  22. #22 | Nord | April 23rd, 2008 at 11:01

Did Ginger become mandatory? Or is it some error, that my account changed from Coriander to Ginger?

  23. #23 | anamorph | April 23rd, 2008 at 11:40

    netvibes is teh fast now!

  24. #24 | jl | April 23rd, 2008 at 14:49

so what’s new netvibes? we like details on improvements and upgrades!

  25. #25 | Dario | April 23rd, 2008 at 15:27

I want my old Netvibes look and feel back! What has it changed?

  26. #26 | BJ | April 23rd, 2008 at 16:33

looking for details on the netvibes blog about this upgrade.

Very curious as to what is new besides the wizard to create pages for NEW users, and the removal of the "drive" link.

I am sort of surprised that the blog is not used to communicate with the netvibes fans… clearly some of them got anxious about the slightly slower upgrade process and some of the changes.

really I am very surprised they don’t use the blog for this

  27. #27 | BR | April 23rd, 2008 at 18:23

First it’s up and very slow for a bit. And then there’s a network error and it’s kaput. Then the cycle repeats.

Netvibes is a professional product. Too bad the network operation is so utterly amateur.

  28. #28 | Rikostan | April 23rd, 2008 at 18:34

I have not had access to my home page for about 12 hours now.

It really makes you realize how dependent you are on other people when you don’t have access to a lot of your info for that long.

  29. #29 | Aaje | April 23rd, 2008 at 21:33

(im)patiently waiting.. haven’t been able to netvibe all day.. Fearing all my rss feeds are gone.. Going to bed now. hopefully the site will be back up again tomorrow.

Good luck sysadmins. Always a bitch when you can’t get the stuff up and running in time.

  30. #30 | wuzzup | April 24th, 2008 at 01:29

My netvibes been down for several hours now and still isnt loading my page.. how much longer? man needs his netvibes…

  31. #31 | Sleaz E | April 24th, 2008 at 01:40

No Netvibes = longest day of work ever.

  32. #32 | walter | April 24th, 2008 at 03:14

    regards walter

  33. #33 | Merja | April 24th, 2008 at 06:37

Are you going to fix those broken links? Yesterday I could’t get in and now my rss-feeds are broken.

  34. #34 | Bart | April 24th, 2008 at 07:54

all this wining about ginger… I love it but like it to be more reliable. Clearly upgrade is giving you guys some issues but I am sure you are on top of it. Perhaps send us an update via the blog on what is going on to calm some of us..

  35. #35 | Mithun Sreedharan | April 24th, 2008 at 08:37

Roughly four hours?? It is about more than 20 hours, i have been displayed your upgrade page,
    It is 1:15pm IST now, I can’t wait more…
Please bring my home page back….

  36. #36 | staticsirupflo | April 24th, 2008 at 08:39

I’m getting internal server errors all the time…yesterday there was this announcement then it work and now it’s broken again…Please turn it up again ;)

BTW great work and nice tool!

  37. #37 | chrholm.dk | April 24th, 2008 at 09:05

I NEED my netvibes, just like so many other people :|
I can understand maintenance, and I was glad that you informed about it in advance. But when something goes wrong, tell us about it.
Yesterday after maintenance my netvibes was working, and today it looks even more broken(stupid message).
I realize that you are having problems, and that you rather fix it then telling us about it. But please inform us.
We don’t like to mushroomed (Keep them in the dark, and feed them shit).
We need our netvibes, and you need us.
I agree with #24 about google, and when you make stunts like this – it makes me wonder if I should use iGoogle instead of netvibes

  38. #38 | Philippe | April 24th, 2008 at 09:17

    "Internal Server Error" since yesterday.
It worked at some point, but then nothing…

Do you think you’ll be able to fix it soon ?

  39. #39 | Joe | April 24th, 2008 at 09:20

And it’s dead again. "Internal Server Error"

I’d at least like an update on the progress. Maybe then I’d be a little more patient. But no. There’s no communication at all from Netvibes.

You people do realize that folks rely on your service, don’t you? Maybe you don’t. You act like you don’t.

Wonder how long it would take to get used to iGoogle.

  40. #40 | Anthony | April 24th, 2008 at 09:59

    Hi Netvibes team,

Please, could you give us an update on what’s going on ? It’s been more than 24 hours without my Netvibes page and I don’t see any explanation from you.
I love Netvibes and use it a lot, but I find it strange that you haven’t taken the time to write a small post about what’s happening.
    Thanks and good luck !

  41. #41 | Thomas | April 24th, 2008 at 10:07

Does somebody know at what time it is supposed to be back.
Since yesterday morning I can’t access Netvibes :-(

  42. #42 | David | April 24th, 2008 at 10:17

Oh my god, netvibes is down. It is now that I realize how much I depend on u guys… ;) Keep up the phantastic work! but bring the service back on the servers asap ;)

  43. #43 | dy | April 24th, 2008 at 10:21

    2nd day without netvibes. annoying.

  44. #44 | Frank Abrams | April 24th, 2008 at 10:28

I love netvibes but your business is going down the tubes this week. Crap.

  45. #45 | Eddie | April 24th, 2008 at 10:29

This is really bad, second working day down for users in the GMT time zone, people use Netvibes as a working tool, not just as a pretty thing to look at.
I’ll stick with Netvibes if you manage to get it back up and reliable again but I’m going to have to have an iGoogle set up to fall back on, possibly permanently if this happens again.
    Very disappointed.

  46. #46 | coco | April 24th, 2008 at 10:31

When you’re an online business, having your website down is a bad thing. But not giving timely updates is not just bad, it’s wrong.

  47. #47 | Yuri Vrancken | April 24th, 2008 at 10:32

Hi there, internal server errors everywhere…

    No good… :(

I guess you’re working like hell to fix this, good luck!

    Cheers, Yuri.

  48. #48 | bryan | April 24th, 2008 at 11:01

Here is the message I am getting. HELP!!!!!!!

"Sorry, we are unable to connect you to Netvibes.
Due to a network problem, your page is currently unavailable.
Rest assured, we’re working diligently to have your favorite
start page back online very soon.
    Thanks again for your patience.
    – The netvibes team"

    Is anyone out there??????
    I need my NetVibes……………..
I did not know how much I valued this service.

  49. #49 | James | April 24th, 2008 at 11:09

I’m getting the "Sorry, we are unable to connect you to Netvibes" message too. It would be the work of seconds to put a note on the blog explaining what’s going on. Please do so.

(Some kind of response to the support tickets I’ve been filing for the past fortnight wouldn’t hurt either.)

  50. #50 | fivesilver | April 24th, 2008 at 11:29

This is all looking a bit ominous.
We all know that these kind of outages can happen to a company with limited capital (Netvibes, of course, being a free service). However, the lack of any kind of engagement with users’ concerns suggests an attitude issue.
Looks like we may be entering the territory of "Well, we’ve shown we’ve got a great piece of software that’s gained great popularity; we just don’t have the resources/inclination to keep it going as a major concern. Time to sit back and make an instant fortune as one of the big boys buys us out."
Of course, the problem with this is that the big boys don’t buy out something just because it’s good; they buy it because it’s a potential competitior (e.g Flickr).
Judging by the series of comments about iGoogle above, it appears that sooner or later, if we want reliable service, we’re all being pushed into the arms of the oligarchs.

  51. #51 | James | April 24th, 2008 at 11:33

I agree with that chrholm.dk says above:
"We don’t like to mushroomed (Keep them in the dark, and feed them shit)."

I realise things like server upgrades can go wrong sometimes, but it would be great if you could tell us what is happening and when you expect it to be fixed. Although we are paying customers in the traditional sense, that doesn’t mean you can alienate us in this way, it is incredibly unprofessional.

    -James

  52. #52 | Dom | April 24th, 2008 at 11:37

I love netvibes, but now i use pageflakes…

  53. #53 | Tom | April 24th, 2008 at 12:01

I love Netvibes .. but these outages suck bigtime and they are not rare anymore. If there is no communication and the problem is not fixed today i will check out iGoogle again. Google might be a privacy nightmare .. but at least they have a high uptime :-P

  54. #54 | Richard | April 24th, 2008 at 12:03

What is going on ?? Has someone switched the lights off and forgotten to tell the users.

    Where is the update ??

We all know shit happens and can accept it but not to provide an update is just plain unprofessional and is also handing your hard earned user base over to your competitors.

Very disappointing – I hope your investors (if you have any left) give you a swift kick up the backside.

  55. #55 | Frank Abrams | April 24th, 2008 at 12:07

guess what — it ain’t Wed. anymore!

someone list reliable alternatives please please!

  56. #56 | Sam | April 24th, 2008 at 12:10

Hey guys ! What are you expecting from a beta software ?

Trust the netvibes team. Wait & see…

  57. #57 | Marcello | April 24th, 2008 at 12:13

I just left Windows Live because Microsoft’s sites were constantly non-functional and they didn’t provide service updates on their blogs. So I signed up for Netvibes. There’s a joke in there somewhere, and I feel like the punchline is *me*…

  58. #58 | Eia | April 24th, 2008 at 12:21

    Sorry Netvibes …
We had some great times …

    When I was seventeen
    I registered at Netvibes.

    I registered at Netvibes
after hearing about it on digg.com.

    My name was Brian McGee.
I stayed up adding more feeds.

    When I was seventeen.

    When I was twenty five
    I registered at iGoogle.

    I registered at iGoogle
after Netvibes was down for days.

    My name was Brian McGee.
I stayed up adding my feeds.

    When I was twenty five.

  60. #60 | jmiguel.rodriguez | April 24th, 2008 at 12:37

More than 24 hours without netvibes it’s being a real pain, but much worse it’s the lack of feedback about what’s going on.

Please tell us what’s happening!. If you need one more day I’ll suffer it but PLEASE TELL!

  61. #61 | Karl | April 24th, 2008 at 12:59

Must say I am really dependend on netvibes, almost addicted, as I experienced the last few hours. All my news updates, mail accounts, web tools and hobby related things are on my netvibes desk. I can’t live and work without it. Please keep it running ad infinitum, only very necessary maintainance is allowed ;-) I tried other tools (feedreader) and pages (mashups), but netvibes is the one and only!!!

  62. #62 | Kerwin | April 24th, 2008 at 14:48

It feels like… there is no internet…

I’m heading Out Californee Way, maybe there is still some Netvibes there…

  63. #63 | nicole | April 24th, 2008 at 14:58

after coming back from being down — all my feeds were in one tab labeled "Lost & found"

it’s going to take me FOREVER to reorganize… thanks for chewing up half my day netvibes

I wish there was a way to have saved/exported my data

F**k it, I have tried accessing Netvibes every day since 23rd and got the message "we’re upgrading our servers, blah, blah". Today I realised I have to delete all my cookies to get the Netvibes back…Maybe this information comes handy for others out there still trying to get Netvibes working. Or maybe someone already posted this before me, I was just too tired to read all the posts…

More than a day without Netvibes will be difficult. I need Netvibes but i think it is good there are new features soon
