Netvibes Labs

At Netvibes, we like to play with technology, remix the web and imagine what your favorite personalizable page will be in the future. To make you be a part of it, we’re happy to open the doors to our labs : http://www.netvibes.com/labs. In the labs, you’ll be able to make wishes for new widgets and play with cool experimental toys.

Widget wishlist

Since the beginning, we’ve always been rolling new widgets regularly. These widgets were built thanks to your incredible feedbacks. With the widget wishlist, we would like to make the process more collaborative. Here is how it works:

  • you can make 3 wishes per day. All wishes must be about widgets only. Other wishes will be deleted;
  • you can vote for a wish. Once done, you get another wish to vote for. Think it as “hot or not” for widgets;
  • we’re maintaining a list of the top wishes;

This list will help us and third-party developers determine which widgets should be created. If you’ve always wished for a particular widget, go make your wish now!

Experimental projects

Along with the Widget Wishlist, we’re releasing three experimental projects for you to play with. All are directly related to your page and we would love to know what you think about them. Find a project useless? Want it integrated directly in Netvibes? Tell us! But keep in mind that those projects are experimental.

The three projects we’re releasing today are:

  • Spring cleaning, a tool for analyzing your feeds and tell you which you can remove: feeds you never read and feeds that haven’t been updated recently;
  • Tag cloud, a tool for analyzing your feeds and generate a tag cloud. It’s both beautiful and useful: click a keyword and you get recommendations, straight from our Ecosystem;
  • Theme designer, a graphical user interface for creating XML theme. You no longer have to write XML. Simply pick colors, change an image and voilà!

You’ll find all the details at http://www.netvibes.com/labs. We are willing to release more experimental projects in the future and will keep you posted when we do. For now, play with them and let us know what you think by leaving a comment or by sending us an e-mail!

    Upon my first visit, it’s telling me I can’t make any wishes. Not off to a good start IMHO.

  2. #2 | Lorraine | April 15th, 2009 at 19:57

    I too an unable to make any wishes. This can’t bode well.

  3. #3 | Bertrand | April 16th, 2009 at 02:47

    And it seems like a lot of people missunderstand the comment feature as the make a new wish feature.
    Maybe you should change the page style to make it more obvious…

    There was a problem in limiting the number of wishes per user. It should be fixed now :)

    Free at last! Free at last!

    I am free of the Big Ugly Green Button at last!

    One more thing: You need to provide a complete list of all the wishes. There are already some duplicates because nobody can check to see if their wish has already been made. This dilutes the results. I’m particularly concerned about this because I think an Evernote widget would be a great idea. But the votes are being divided between two effectively identical wishes.

    i told you my wish about 5 times, i want a button (if you make it as a widget, fine, taken) "mark all (really all, all tabs…) as read. i want to leave my netvives site sometimes "all read" and dont want to click on 10 tabs.

  8. #8 | Dave | April 16th, 2009 at 18:57

    Would love the ability to have sub-menu tabs. And more tools to monitor key words through out the internet.

  9. #9 | Rollo | April 16th, 2009 at 19:37

    An option to fix the height of feed widgets, in order to stop the pagination links bouncing up and down according to the content. This is so obvious and I’ve wanted it forever.

    Any chance you can interface Evernote and GetDropBox.net for Netvibes modules?

    @Rollo

    Seconded! Thirded and… er, ‘fourthed’! It’s infuriating to see those RSS widget page links bounce from underneath my mouse cursor. I’d also like to see ‘first page’ and ‘last page’ buttons added akin to this rudimentary doodle:

    Why is it that every time I visit this blog I find mostly whiny and complaining comments from Netvibes users? Yeah, the site can always be improved – but Netvibes is providing a FREE and superior service in a space dominated by Google. We shouldn’t forget to thank them for that. Keep up the great work!

    Since this isn’t a widget request, I’ll put it here. I love Netvibes, but I’d love the ability to put column headers manually over each column on a tab. For example: I have a DESIGN tab with four columns: UX design, Photoshop, Usability, and Competitors. I would love to be able to clearly label each column instead of having to remember that on my own.

  14. #14 | Ian | April 17th, 2009 at 03:54

    Yup, well done to the NetVibes team, the service aint 100% perfect but is well ahead of anything else I have tried before!

    this is a great way to do it, I would like to get to interview the founder on ArabCrunch I think he is Muslim or org. Arabic.

    Can I wish for a widget that would grant me unlimited wishes?

    People are having a real hard time grasping that the comments section is not the Make a Wish section, aren’t they?

  21. #21 | Cathy Booth | April 18th, 2009 at 14:32

    I’d like sub-menu tabs too eg. to set up tabs for Places eg. for my home city, parents’ town, annual holiday resorts. I’d have local weather, transport info, restaurant recommendations etc. under each.

    @Brandon Milner: an easy way to to this is to use webnotes to label each column

    I am developing an apollo Dashboard program that has multiple draggable panel sbased on different business metrics (panel for accounting, panel for HR etc) so I need it to be extensible and easily reusable. Any shortcomings you can think of?
