Netvibes introduce Keyboard control
Tired of using the mouse ?
Some actions can now be triggered with your keyboard to make you work faster. There are keyboard shortcuts for navigation, the feedreader, tabs and the content panel. For example, press “N” in the feedreader to read the next item and “P” to read the previous one. When you’re done, simply press “Escape” to close the feedreader. There are a lot more shortcuts, so, anytime, you can press “H” to get the list of available keyboard shortcuts for the current context.

You will also find the complete list in the help section of eco.netvibes.com.

I’ve noticed this yesterday, but i noticed a problem with it as well. It seems that when you’re entering text into the settings of the "custom" modules from the ecosystem (try the last.fm one for example) the shortcut keys are triggered and the page starts doing unexpected things like showing the "add content" bar etc…

Wow . How many new features in 24h!
Good it will help us improve our productivity in NetVibes.

)
Did you think about "Read all" action? If it’s posible, we thank it a lot.
(Sorry for my english

Dude, if you could improve a little bit the average speed of netvibes, optimizing it a bit, because, i have 9 tabs, beetwen 5 and 10 Modules on each pages, and with maxthon (IE6 XPSP2 Engine) it frozes often, too often.
Thanks ! Netvibes FTW
#5 | frofro | June 1st, 2006 at 17:11
Awesome, I’ve always wanted at least a close feed reader keyboard shortcut.
#6 | Schmots | June 1st, 2006 at 17:17
I want to be able to turn this off. I can’t type my username into any "custome" fields anymore.. the help keeps popping up
#7 | jay | June 1st, 2006 at 17:21
wow you guys are on a feature spree…loads of changes in 24hrs…all of em are greatt!! keep up the great job…
#8 | durerca | June 1st, 2006 at 17:35
The shortcut keys are very useful. I don’t know if it’s just my Maxthon browser though, but some of the shortcuts don’t work smoothly. The T to escape the content panel, the Esc to remove the focus from a module, and sometimes the J,K to switch tabs. Also, for people using the popular Customize Netvibes module, if you have "remove borders" selected for the tabs, you won’t see the focus ring around the module. Finally, the one shortcut key I don’t like is the down arrow because that interferes when I’m trying to scroll the page with my keyboard. Thank you for all the work on Netvibes.
#9 | Marc | June 1st, 2006 at 17:50
I love shortcuts! Thanks for all the hard work.
#10 | ctang | June 1st, 2006 at 18:17
I don’t use shortcut keys too often, however it would be nice just to use the up and down arrows to read through feeds instead of N and P.
#11 | Brad | June 1st, 2006 at 18:37
This is fantastic. How about a mark all as read shortcut for tabs? (Same as clicking on the red new items number on the tab.)
#12 | Komat | June 1st, 2006 at 18:45
really cool feature it’s going to change my surfing style.the all read would defenitly be a plus. And this maybe : ctrl to go in a module browse trough its titles with up and down + hitting space to open it in a new tab
#13 | Josh | June 1st, 2006 at 19:13
Any chance we could get the "change number of columns" setting back in the screen panel?
#14 | Rupert | June 1st, 2006 at 19:32
how do I close a module i’ve opened by pressing enter?
#15 | Cyrus | June 1st, 2006 at 20:02
hmm… this is pretty annoying… i want to use my up and down arrows to scroll up and down the page like it should, but instead it now just highlights different modules. you guys contemplating option to turn off this feature… very aggravating. thanks
#16 | Manu | June 1st, 2006 at 20:03
Good idea but how do we turn this OFF ?
It interferes with some custom modules from the ecosystem’s repository, e.g. you cannot add stock symbols into the stock quotes module anymore ;-(
#17 | Jean Jordaan | June 1st, 2006 at 20:34
I agree with everyone saying this is annoying. My arrows should scroll the browser window, and nothing else. Keys like h and p also interfere with typeaheadfind in Firefox, a mortal crime.
Pleeeeeeeeeeeze don’t break the good stuff of the web! Please! Please! Pretty please!
#18 | Erik A. Drabløs | June 1st, 2006 at 20:35
Keyboard shortcuts are nice and all, but we really should be able to turn them off…
#19 | Cyrus | June 1st, 2006 at 20:39
woohoo.. keyboard shortcut off option is available under settings. Thanks guys
#20 | Adamus | June 1st, 2006 at 21:42
"mark all in the tab as read" <– under "R" button – would be just great!
#21 | eskey | June 1st, 2006 at 23:01
I think that Ctrl + key would be better option for shortcuts, just to avoid some strange browser behaviours (like not scrolling page on arrows or activating search bar in Firefox for searching typed letters).
The only not disturbing shortcut is Esc
Option to switch off shortcuts (except Esc) could also be a useful feature.
Anyway, keyboard control of netvibes is very good idea !

#23 | Viktor | June 2nd, 2006 at 01:06
thx for the shortcuts, I really apreciate them, and I also have one more suggestion. Think a bit!
How would you open an original post using shortcuts? You can navigate until its rss part, but there is no button to view the original post!
So finally you have to move your hand to the mouse. I don’t want to!
#24 | pile0nades | June 2nd, 2006 at 01:28
I agree with comment #10, it would be better to use up and down in the feedreader. Kudos on the awesome new features though, you guys pwn!
#25 | Jeff | June 2nd, 2006 at 02:46
Is the gmail module broken? I keep getting hung on loading….
These new tweaks are brilliant. Thanks so much for this amazing product. When is someone going to buy this and make you guys rich. Soon, I hope. You deserve it. Great work!
I’m a major Netvibes-evangelist on my blog. Keep it up!

#27 | derrick | June 3rd, 2006 at 19:35
is there any way to turn this off? it’s interefering with my browser keyboard shortcuts.
#28 | derrick | June 3rd, 2006 at 19:36

#29 | Johnny | June 4th, 2006 at 19:38
Would you please share your secret of how to create the shortcuts? I want to create shortcuts for my site, but I searched for create shortcuts for web site in google and nothing valid comes up. Thanks.
#30 | Tam | June 5th, 2006 at 08:14
that great but how turn off it ??
#31 | Michael | June 5th, 2006 at 10:02
Shortcuts are good but with limits.
The limit: Cannot scroll down the start page by using either Down or Page Down.
As an enthusiast for mouseless browsing, I hope this can be fixed soon.
#32 | Diede | June 5th, 2006 at 23:18
i think this shortcuts feature is terrible. i can’t even search more, when i type something in the searchbar, modules start to open, add, delete. fix this terrible bug.
#33 | sheep | June 6th, 2006 at 11:16
same as others : when trying to input text (babelfish for exemple) i’m annoyed with all that shortcuts (no, i don’t wan’t to edit annytime i press "e"…)
#34 | sheep | June 6th, 2006 at 11:29
sorry i’m an idiot, there is the option to disable that on the "settings" pannel
#35 | Quique | June 6th, 2006 at 18:02
J’adore Netvibes.
#36 | Teef | June 8th, 2006 at 14:02
#37 | david | June 10th, 2006 at 01:50
Also the RSS feed for the shortcuts (so I could keep them visable while I learn them) does not work:
eco.netvibes.com/rss.php?…
#38 | Nicolas C. | June 19th, 2006 at 02:59
Mm.. good idea, but I noticed this feature by pressing ctrl+H to open my history in firefox. Now I can’t use such browser shortcut : very bad usability
D.
#39 | Jean | June 25th, 2006 at 10:24
Comment supprimer cette fonction? On ne peut plus écrire dans des modules demandant une saisie de texte!!!! C’est très embétant

Fantastic, now I can navigate without mouse.
#43 | Jeff | August 4th, 2006 at 06:07
I second the requests to be able to turn this feature off. This pretty much breaks Netvibes for use on my MSNTV2. Can’t imagine it’s accessible for the visually-impaired folk who read with screen readers, either.
#44 | Bruno | August 6th, 2006 at 07:13
Yes, we are all addicted to shortcuts!!! And it is somthing important in web 2.0, isn’t it?
#45 | Dominik | August 14th, 2006 at 11:44
Shortcuts are a great idea but unless they are customizable, I won’t be able to use them because some of them conflict with others I already use. E.g. I use alt d to get to the toolbar.
#46 | MacHamR | November 6th, 2006 at 23:14
Is this a MS Windows only thing, or am I just stupid?
I am viewing here in Firefox 1.5 under GNU/Linux, but when I press a key (like h), nothing happens.
#47 | Franck Mahon | November 7th, 2006 at 00:31
MacHamR> Did you activate this option in the Settings panel?
#48 | Fertiggaragen + Carport | January 10th, 2007 at 13:29
It doesnt work on my Mac + Firefox even. Makes me wonder…

#52 | brady | February 26th, 2007 at 21:50
Please allow for "read all" shortcut without having to open each tab. What is the use of having the feed previews showing in the tab if i can’t easily shortcut to read all.
#53 | Tensor | March 8th, 2007 at 02:04
Can you tell me your secret how you have created theshortcuts?
I tried to create shortcuts for my site too, but i failed several times.
Even if I search on Yahoo and Google nothing usefull comes up.
I would be glad if you write me how you have done it or just sent me the link where I can get the information.
#54 | Jones | March 17th, 2007 at 09:27
Shortcuts are great but in this case there are some of the shortcuts that I am used to using for different purposes (as I read in others’ comments I am not the only one) and that can be pretty annoying at times. For example the arrows up and down – I think it will be better if they can be used for scrolling up and down. For navigation through modules may be you could use the tab button or somethin else.
