Some Netvibes improvements

We just performed an update and are excited to introduce a few more cool features. As you know we are intend to launch a new version of Netvibes. Code name, Coriander.

Improving the RSS and introducing the Media RSS support.

We all know how boring RSS can be, so the idea is to make RSS sexy. With our new RSS modules you can preview your favourite blogs, newspapers with pictures, podcast play button and some more text right away.

If you want to use the compact view, just untick the “Show more details” mark in the Edit panel.

More choice in our search modules

Your digital information butler just got a little more clever. A vertical search module (podcast, blogs, photos and video) lets you search across several sites at once for websites, pictures, videos, and more. Now we have taught it to search across even more sites: metacafe.com, sevenload.com (videosearch), pixsy.com (pictures) and blogsearch.google.com (blogs). With the drop down menu, you can personalise the set and the order of websites you want to search on.

Custom DLA

Craigslist…at last!

For those who know Craigslist, just so you know: it is finally here! For everyone else: Craigslist.org rocks at classifieds. And with our new module you never miss the perfect offer, because you see all the freshest ads matching your needs right on your netvibes page.

Let’s say you’re looking for a loft in San Francisco Bay Area. Simply configure it for San Francisco Bay Area and type “loft”. You’re done! Too easy.

Back up your feed subscription

Making a backup copy of all your feed subscriptions is now easier than ever. Simply:

  • Right into the “Settings” panel;
  • Go to the “Backup” section; and
  • Click “Export my feeds” to download all your subscriptions in OPML format.

And as expected, we fixed the bugs you reported to us. Thank you for keeping us informed – your feedbacks really matter to us.

Please let us know how much you like the new features.

I was waiting for this announcement. Noticed the podcast buttons a while ago. As well as the expanded view. Nice new placement for backing up your feeds.

Excellent que l’on puisse enfin sauvegarder nos flux!
    Merci.

    Thanks!

    A.

Great Tariq, will we have soon a functionnality like the widget on demand from webwag?

  5. #5 | ilan abehassera | February 20th, 2007 at 15:56

    keep truckin’ tariq

    Excellent improvements! RSS gets visual!

But I already saw these improvs 2 weeks ago. A late post in your blog, i guess?

    keep up!

  7. #7 | Joe | February 20th, 2007 at 16:12

I love the photos in the Wired module, but I can’t find any other feeds that take advantage of that feature.

  8. #8 | Alex | February 20th, 2007 at 16:25

Is the new version ‘Coriander’ going to be a whole revamp or just incremental updates to the current netvibes?

  9. #9 | Jerry Chappell | February 20th, 2007 at 16:36

The BACKUP function is greatly appreciated! I feel much better just having that locally. But I see that it doesn’t backup my WebNotes or ToDoList. I keep additional links and notes to myself in there, so I’d like them to be backed up too, please. Thanks for the great work.

  10. #10 | Dean | February 20th, 2007 at 16:48

The [ESC] button doesn’t work to close the full view pop-ups anymore. :( Love the easy Export function, though.

  11. #11 | Inbal | February 20th, 2007 at 16:51

Same as Joe, I tried it on all the feeds I have.

  12. #12 | jcmoriaud | February 20th, 2007 at 17:09

  13. #13 | YAChris | February 20th, 2007 at 19:26

Any chance you could fix a bug in the SlashDot feed? It may be a bug in slashdot itself, but they have two ‘classes’ of posts there. One has just the title, the other has the title and an excerpt. Only the latter type can be seen in the feed… it’d be nice to have both.

Thanks again for NetVibes! You guys rock :-)

  14. #14 | egon | February 20th, 2007 at 21:14

Awesome, thanks! I really like the in-line podcast payer, I noticed that a while back. Not a huge fan of the "details" on the blogs, but it’s a cool idea and I understand how some people can use it. Finally, thank you SO MUCH for the backup, I’ve been waiting for this. I’ve had it once where my netvibes simply wouldn’t load anymore so I had to create a new account, losing all of my feeds. Since then I’ve been paranoid about it and have been taking screenshots of each tab occasionally in case that happened again. Word.

Really great! I’m keeping stuck on Netvibes.

  16. #16 | dickz | February 20th, 2007 at 22:53

the mp3 playa is a great feature
keep on the good job guys!

  17. #17 | Alex | February 21st, 2007 at 01:01

I’d really just hope you’d get Windows Live Mail and Yahoo Mail beta support really…

  18. #18 | Olviier | February 21st, 2007 at 09:46

Thanks for the Back up function ! It’s great !

  19. #19 | MikeH | February 21st, 2007 at 09:51

Nice improvements, but I think you’ve introduced a couple of bugs (I’ll report them via Feedback too).

1: Article titles with ampersand are appearing as the HTML format &, same for other HTML-encoded symbols.

2: Sometimes when I click "Read All" and go back to the main view, some articles are still highlighted as unread.

    Bonjour Tariq,

most excellent additions, especially the OPML backups.

question for you guys, though…is there any chance you could add an option to not use the nyud.net proxy? there are a couple of locations where i use netvibes that don’t like port 8090…

  22. #22 | DavidM | February 23rd, 2007 at 10:58

The feed with images are great, it enlarge the page but it’s very more friendly and we don’t need to read now with the media. The export is very fonctionnal but I have a question regarding Google and Yahoo widgets, because you can integrate them in Apple or Microsoft OS and what about netvibes widgets?

  23. #23 | Komsopolit | February 24th, 2007 at 15:34

the podcast buttons are really great! any chance of integrating a volume control in the player??

  24. #24 | Adrienhb | February 25th, 2007 at 18:35

    ???

Anyone have a good method for exporting iTunes podcasts to netvibes?

  26. #26 | abel | February 27th, 2007 at 16:45

    IMHO it would be fine:
    – to be able to fix the number of items in feeds in a more flexible way
    – to get a fully keyboard driven funcionality, and
    – to have an optional text interface, less appealing but faster indeed.
    Thank you! #8^)

  27. #27 | l'Annaen | February 28th, 2007 at 14:37

    Good ^^

Just a suggestion, you should make possible to choose the language of the search form. I used to use google.fr as homepage, now it’s Netvibes, but when I’m looking for french informations, I always have to return to Google.fr…

  28. #28 | James | February 28th, 2007 at 17:10

The latest update seems to have screwed by PopMail box up – it’s stuck an additional http on the front of each address so the links don’t work.

I would report this properly, but as much as I love Netvibes, you’ve never once got back to me about a support issue, so I think I’ll just wait for you to fix it…

  29. #29 | Fryzury | February 28th, 2007 at 21:33

Same as Joe, I tried it on all the feeds I have.

  30. #30 | Janeth | February 28th, 2007 at 21:33

The export is very fonctionnal but I have a question regarding Google and Yahoo widgets, because you can integrate them in Apple or Microsoft OS and what about netvibes widgets?

  31. #31 | Thomas Holmes | March 5th, 2007 at 16:25

    Great improvements Tariq!

    Two questions for you:

    1. As a subscriber, you now have a preview feed step when I subscribe to a blog. I have no need to preview a feed – it just makes it an extra step. Is it possible to skip this?

    2. As a publisher – how can I create a feed with images like you have displayed for WIRED above?

    Thanks in advance!

  32. #32 | Komsopolit | March 6th, 2007 at 21:58

I agree with Thomas. The preview option is nice but it should be possible to choose if you want to add a feed right away or if a preview should be shown.

  33. #33 | Karl Sultana | March 30th, 2007 at 13:32

Yes, thanks for the new tools … they are helpful. I stopped using Google Bookmarks to view rss fields.

  34. #34 | dcxixl | May 24th, 2007 at 00:28

Hi! I used information from that site its great.
    I’ll be back.

  35. #35 | roselia | June 14th, 2007 at 01:23

Yeah those improvements really mean a lot.
    Thanks much, Netvibes rules

  36. #36 | mingus | June 14th, 2007 at 19:15

    Yes, thanks for excellent updates.
Graphical RSS was what I’ve been waiting for.
    Excellent job

  37. #37 | brinkmann | June 19th, 2007 at 23:37

Great, thanks, it’ those little things like bad RSS that bothered me visual RSS is something I always wanted, cheers

  38. #38 | Troy | July 19th, 2007 at 02:22

I like the new update and especially the fact that you included Craigslist.
