Enter the Netvibes Universe (update)

Today we’re introducing something that will change, and improve, the way you use Netvibes: the Netvibes Universe.

Personal Universes

Soon, every single Netvibes user will be able to create a personal Netvibes Universe, that is, a Netvibes page that you can build using the content and widgets that you want — and make it available to the world at large.

Netvibes users will soon have two pages for every account: a private page, where you subscribe to all the content for your personal, everyday use, and a public page, where you can allow others to access your favorite content — everything that you love on the web.

Netvibes will not only be your start page, but also the page where people who know you (and maybe even some who don’t) will go to follow all the feeds, widgets, and sites that you recommend.

Branded Universes

But that’s only the beginning of the Netvibes Universe. Starting today, more than a hundred special Netvibes Universe pages will be available to the world. We have partnered with leading content publishers to create official Universes for some of your favorite musicians and media outlets. Get all the daily content about Ben Harper, Moby, Deftones, Mandy Moore, 50 cent, Snoop Dogg and many other artists on their own Netvibes Universe. Get all the stories from CBS, CNN Money, Newsweek and many others on one page, which you can access anywhere for free. You can even add it all to your own personal Netvibes page.

Navigating the Universe

The netvibes sidebar now features a “universe browser” to allow you to navigate between universes and your private pages. To open the universe browser, click on the Universes link at the top of the sidebar.

Netvibes universes can be added from netvibes ecosystem (click on the “Browse our directory” link in the “universe browser”) or directly from links on sites, blogs, or portals. Once you open a universe, the “universe browser” will show up to provide information about the universe you are viewing. You can also choose to add all the content on the universe to your private page.

In the next few weeks, we’ll be releasing more and more Universes for your favorite media sources. Want to see an official Universe for a site that’s not here? Let us know.

Update August 1, 2007: New Universe Behavior — Thanks to your valued feedback, we’ve decided to change the behavior of Universes to give you the most up- to-date content and widgets. Universes will be updated by their editors, and, every time you go to a Universe, you will be able to copy all of the content to your private page. If you’ve already made your own changes to a Universe, you will be given the option to save it to a private page.

    The funniest thing is, when I loaded up my computer and I saw NetVibes was gone I thought "What the heck am I going to do?!".

    Visit sites individually – are you crazy?!

    And I’ve been a user for one month. Congrats, I’m hooked. :)

    Eeeeek I can’t get to my page anymore, what have you done?! ;)

    IE7 and Firefox 2.0 are both chewing up memory and CPU when browsing to the site and they don’t ever stop doing so.

    Quick, I can’t live without netvibes for long! ;)

    Can’t help but feel that everything is more spaced out now than before? Sort of what the "Give feeds more space" option does.

    I don’t like that.

    Other than that though it looks like a nice update. Cool that you will be able to share pages.

    The netvibes website is down for upgrade since this morning….

    I thinks that this unavailability is innaceptable regarding to the number of Netvibes addicts :)

    Am sure you would never see this on a yahoo website for example :-/

    This does look pretty damn cool – although i guess theres a risk of it becoming a myspace…. (well i see it as a bad thing ;) please can you ban animated gifs….)

    When is netvibes going to give users a @netvibes.com address to complete the start page? I really thought that this would be part of the netvibes universe.

    A Netvibes self email module would be an awesome addition – the way you can preview feeds and open feeds in a new tab could very easily be applied to email reading and composing. It would be much faster than opening the new Yahoo mail which has become way too slow.

    Please add this to the to-do list Netvibes.

    I think it’s a bummer that Ben Harper’s page is up and running but I still can’t access mine. I think your priorities are messed up when you’re screwing your old users in favor of your new partners.

    Despite everyone’s obvious glee about these parallel universes, I can’t help but think that when this goes to a personal level all we’re going to find is hundreds of universes all about people’s cats.

    Call me a cynic, but I just see this becoming a detriment instead of a bonus. This from a dedicated Netvibes user.

    Same here, I hardly see the point of the universe "concept"… but that’s just me :-)

    I love netvibes for many reasons, but the top number one it’s because it stays simple and keeps the essential.

    "Universe" to me looks like a big shared tab, but if that makes others happy i m fine with it :-)

    Is it normal my rss feed have their items so spaced ?

    I have scrollbars on all of my tabs now. I wish i recover the theme i had before with well condensed rss feed boxes.

    Plus that causes an inesthetical problem with my own widgets, having the normal and previous spacing rules on unordered lists.

    line-height should be 1.0em

    it seems like there is a problem with the new External Widget thing, it won’t stay at where you put it on your tap. it always keep going back to the bottom left of the page whenever I reload my vibes.!

    does anybody have a similar problem!

    TechCrunch says personal universes will be available in about six weeks.

    I would have preferred to see regular universes embedded on my private page’s header like tabs, instead of hidden inside the menu. It’s bizarre to check manually for updates on a page that is on your RSS reader, where everything new usually pops up…
    Here’s an idea: a window detailing the number of new entries on each feed/module in a particular universe, listed by tab, when you hover over its title, and the same general red count that tabs have for all feeds in that universe next to the title. (Actually, the details window would be kind of nice for tabs on the private page too…)

    For the petty complaints section, why is the menu open on default every time you switch universes?
    And what’s happening with that Silver Coriander theme?

    I’m not certain if it’s only been happening after the most recent update (I imagine it is since I probably would’ve noticed before) but whenever I get the extra feed details on mousing over a link, it will stay even if I mouseout of the link.

    It’s quite annoying and I’m not too sure if it’s just on my end or not.

    Matter of taste I guess though I like the picture rich stuff better.

    cutups & dude are right on it – multi-user Universes are a necessity – with multiple levels of permissions for different members of each Universe.(change layout, add/delete widget, only update/modify widget content, etc) – and SOON. You made the Universes announcement a month ago, please don’t make me bail over to PageFlakes just to get the functionality I need _now_.

    Oh, and if I close a widget on a Universe that somebody else has setup, how can I get that widget back up again? Is there a way to reset the Universe to the Author’s preferred view? (without wiping my Netvibes cookies) Which brings up the suggestion of incorporating a way to see the preferred views of Universes that other people are using (if I setup a Universe, it would be very useful to know if those who view it are routinely turning off, minimizing, or moving one widget or another).

    Currently having serious issues with both IE and FF – cannot load netvibes page at all, as it simply results in a blank white page.

    I’ve tried clearing the cache and cookies, but again, once logged in the netvibes page shows no content whatsoever.

    The UWA widgets are supported on the Iphone, but it’s a particular platform and for example there is some issues with iframes and Flash is not supported.

    UWA widgets are rendered through an iframe (like in Netvibes) but the ugly scrollbars that you can see on your regular browser will be nicely handled automatically by the Iphone browser.

    You can’t edit preferences yet (it’s read only).
