Update: Database Server Maintenance (update : up again)

You probably noticed some errors today around 1PM GMT (5AM PST) due to heavy load. We thought that you would love our new Ginger features but we didn’t expect such a success!

In order to prevent any additional load problems we’ll take this opportunity to bring the site down at 5PM GMT (9AM PST) in order to upgrade the database servers. The expected downtime is about 4 hours which will give us the ability to fix this and prepare the next wave of upgrades and features.

We’ll of course let you know as soon as everything is up again.

Update: Everything is back to normal. The servers came up again at midnight GMT (4PM PST). It took us then 30 minutes to digest the load of all the users refreshing their Netvibes every 20 seconds ;)

5. #5 | JR | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:24

This reads to me like
"My personal Internet is preparing to upgrade itself"

coool

*can’t wait*

6. #6 | Netviber | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:25

Hi,
it could be interesting for Netvibes to have the possibility to publish a short Alert Message on all Netvibes pages for such emergency cases…
Thanks and good work.

7. #7 | WooX | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:25

Damn, where to go for 4 ours?

8. #8 | Frank | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:26

Damn.. How am I gonna spend my day now while drinking my early coffee?
I guess I’ll have to go to igoogle… just kidding :) You guys rock. Keep up the good work

9. #9 | anonymous | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:28

Perhaps the next upgrade could be to set up a hot cluster, so that you can take one server down for upgrades and leave the other running? Slow/busy netvibes secondary server is better than no netvibes.

10. #10 | Dan | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:30

some warning would be nice.
I am switching back to google

11. #11 | GarbledOne | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:30

Well, crap. I guess I’m just going to have to do actual work for a while. Thanks guys, for ruining the first half of my day… :P
Honestly though, I can’t wait to try out Ginger. Do what you guys have to do!

12. #12 | Alex | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:31

thanks…

13. #13 | ycg | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:33

Just an idea, a warning message should appear a few hours before the shutdown… Thanks.

14. #14 | Gauthier | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:44

Bon courage pour la maintenance :)
Et encore merci pour tout votre super travail à Netvibes !!!

15. #15 | Paulo | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:47

love the image "doctoring netvibes"

16. #16 | LouSit | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:48

Oh great. It’s been 30 minutes and the tremors have begun. In 4 hours I will be a quivering mass of gelatinous protoplasm. Complete this post haste.

Thank you very much for Netvibes and Ginger.

17. #17 | Gordo | January 23rd, 2008 at 17:50

I hope hope hope my account migrates to ginger when it comes back online. I changed over last night at like 9 and as of today still no migration. Either way keep up the great work Netvibes!

21. #21 | Pat | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:09

Boy, that remembers me of a day when Google was offline. It’s like the internet stops existing. I’d love to use Ginger and blog about it though… INVITE ME!!! :-)

22. #22 | kronflux | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:10

eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww.. health check… now I have to visit each site seperately. ah well. thanks for the great service in the past.. lets home this health check doesn’t last too long.

23. #23 | Mitko | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:13

the new ginger is more then great, its fantastic!!! :) keep on the amazing work!!!

24. #24 | Kevin | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:14

Dudes. Pick a better time or try the hotcluster idea. I use this as a home page and if this happens like 3 times, I’m outa here, probably (shudder) over to igoogle. I imagine I’m not the only one with a short attention span/tolerance.

25. #25 | Blaspheme Bourne | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:20

Dag. And I had just signed up too. G’luck!

26. #26 | Chrys | Greblog Mongrenoble | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:24

Merci maurice de m’avoir prévenu à l’avance :)

27. #27 | Cedric | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:29

"probably (shudder) over to igoogle"

Very very funny ? How dare you ?

Would you really really switch to the ugly iGoogle Personal Page.

We’ve become very very impatient with the Internet.

Continuez votre excellent travail, les gars (et les garces).

28. #28 | noname | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:29

will wait

29. #29 | Keith Peters | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:30

withdrawal setting in. hurry!

30. #30 | Jerry | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:32

I just realized (as I do every time the site is unavailable) how reliant I have become upon Netvibes. Folks, please do some clustering or something.

31. #31 | torba | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:32

Yeah! the new ginger is excellent!!! :) Thank You!

32. #32 | Frederic | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:32

I´ve been using Netvibes for two years. Really great, my favorite tool. Please give me Ginger when the server comes up again. By the way, congrats for the Crunchies!

33. #33 | ramon | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:42

guys! it’s the worth time to put the site down, 9AM PST to 1PM PST.
did you think about the geeks around the west coast? :)

34. #34 | crashkid | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:48

wow, i don’t know that netvibes became that important for me. without netvibes i don’t know what to do in far of the world wide web. now i have to wait until my feeds are accessible again. *waitin’*

thanks for your work, netvibes-team. you’re doing a great job!

35. #35 | matt | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:49

Yikes, it would be nice to have some warning about this. Not that I’m moving to Google, but I have to go somewhere until you come back!

36. #36 | iestyn | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:49

I didn’t realise how essential Netvibes is to me until now :-o

Please could we have some kind of public warning message at the top of our Netvibes page if it’s all going offline for 4 hours! Please!

37. #37 | Jamaal | January 23rd, 2008 at 18:59

And productivity increases nationwide. So, will Ginger appear when the servers come back up, or are the rest of us doomed to wait?

38. #38 | eddanx | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:00

Wonder what people would say if google.com was down one day because of "database upgrades"…

39. #39 | Kadikoi | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:05

No problems ! Thank’s for your work!

40. #40 | Jeff D | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:06

I just realized I don’t know how to find my daily information anymore when Netvibes is down, very weird.

41. #41 | Slimy | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:08

This is bullshit. No warning and no option to export your opml file to view the feeds elsewhere. Good thinking.

42. #42 | bookmarks | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:12

How do you think you can create TRUST by shutting down servers surpisingly?

I am pissed of, I got ALL my bookmars on netvibes.

43. #43 | eric | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:12

Do I have to wait a long time to get the invitation code for ginger ? I requested the code yesterday, a message said I have been added to the list, but is it possible to know my position in the list ?

44. #44 | googlefan | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:13

Should we switch to iGoogle? They AT LEAST have money for servers and the make proper design for HIGH availability needs.

45. #45 | common sense | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:19

41 and 42, lol, it’s a free service btw, why u gettin’ mad? sucks for you. 41, maybe you’ll back up your s#it next time incase something like THIS happens….isn’t that the point of a backup? 42, try del.icio.us., then u won’t have bookmark problems.

46. #46 | Macram | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:19

I love Netvibes too… But I couldn’t taste Ginger, I’ll try again tomorrow (if Netvibes is up).

47. #47 | alaya129 | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:20

Netvies est le meilleur !

48. #48 | common sense | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:22

44, (and all the igoogle fanbois)for the record, igoogle blows.

49. #49 | Macram | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:22

Googlefan: if you don’t like Netvibes, don’t troll here. Go trolling to another place.

50. #50 | nanoblogmaster | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:25

Encore un effort et tout ira mieux ;)

51. #51 | Joe | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:29

Great stuff – I loved it for the first day and I wonder how I’m going to read all that stuff without it, I almost forgot most of the sites — keep up the work

52. #52 | free service! | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:35

idiots like 41, 42 apparently do not know what does "free service" mean…

hurry guys, can’t wait for my beloved Netvibes :)

and thank you for your great software!

53. #53 | melissa | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:35

help! i need my netvibes back! i’m in withdrawal!

54. #54 | necro | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:37

nuisance. my rss’s…. )))

55. #55 | Erica | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:38

Dang it netvibes! Some warning would of been nice, I use netvibes at work for my to do list, notes and bookmarks. Now I feel lost.

56. #56 | Grommit | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:38

stop nagging people… it’s super that the guys of netvibes check there servers to keep this great server up-and-running as good as they can.
Keep up the good work guys.

57. #57 | Urosk | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:42

Thank you all in Netvibes team. You are doing great work here…

I can’t imagine my day without having netvibes…

58. #58 | mike | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:43

guys need to relax a bit about the down time.

"what if google shut down for database updates" well google is a BILLION dollar company. they have server farms.. im pretty sure the owners of netvibes are probably doing this as a side project…

also being a web developer myself you can prepare but not fully for any type of rush of customers. bugs happen! so what if there was no warning, isnt netvibes a FREE product?

i have been using netvibes for years, no complaints here.. you guys take the time to get it right instead of rushing a fix to please the whiners.

59. #59 | Dali | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:48

GREAT WORK! Thank you guys. Keep on doing great netvibes ;-)

60. #60 | beatlebum | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:51

sure a warning would be nice, now what am i supposed to do?…

61. #61 | Dave | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:52

Love Netvibes. I only hope that a lesson is learned from this rollout and that it is not repeated in the future. Being down for 4 hours is really inexcusable nowadays. I hope and trust that steps will be taken to eliminate the downtime should a situation like this arise again. Yes, it’s free, but that’s no excuse for poor planning.

I think Netvibes is a much stronger product than iGoogle, but I do keep a duplicate of my Netvibes page there just in case my beloved NV goes away unexpectedly. Comes in handy on days like today, and gives me a chance to see what the competition is up to as well.

Hope to see you up and running soon…

62. #62 | Jive Turkey | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:55

Please give us warning next time.

63. #63 | Baumann | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:59

"Being down for 4 hours is really inexcusable nowadays."

Really? Seriously? Are you using Netvibes to track the stock market or something? Or possibly you’re a doctor and you’re using it to look at up-to-date medical information on your patients?

I’d be willing to guess that almost all of us use netvibes for pretty much the same things: organizing bookmarks, aggregating RSS feeds, checking our email. If any of these are things that you can’t live without for 4 hours, perhaps you need a much longer break from netvibes and the internet all-together.

64. #64 | Jul | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:59

May I ask for compensations ? Like … a invitation for Ginger ? :P

I can’t live without Netvibes. Thanks to you guys for your work.

See you soon !

65. #65 | Craig | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:59

I don’t think their real competition is iGoogle, yet. There are other players that almost enticed me to switch such as Pageflakes. Ginger looks good so far but like everybody said it’s not acceptable to be down especially during normal hours and warning. If you want to compete you have be better than the big boys. Yahoo, Google, or MSN would never be down for maintenance.

66. #66 | Free Service? | January 23rd, 2008 at 19:59

Doesn’t mater that it’s a free service. All sites like netvibes are free services. That’s no excuse for not giving a warning.

67. #67 | Erwin | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:01

@googlefan Yes, YOU should switch. Bye!

68. #68 | Joe Blow | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:01

When is it going to be back?

69. #69 | Free Service? | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:01

It doesn’t matter if netvibes is free, so are its competitors. Free isn’t an excuse for not offering a warning message.

70. #70 | monkey | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:02

Yesterday: I HAZ Ginger!
Today: I NO HAZ Ginger?!

I’ve never been so sorry to be on PST.

71. #71 | Geck | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:02

So unprofessional.
Try the hotcluster idea. This is my one and only homepage.

72. #72 | just surprised | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:07

I love netvibes and think this is a great service, however I am sad that we were not given warning of the downtime. Anyone have any suggestions of a better site like netvibes? I’m willing to entertain comparisons between free services and downtime.

73. #73 | Slimy | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:16

@72, I just posted this: http://www.neowin.net/forum/inde... and I’m watching it carefully

74. #74 | Baumann | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:23

Well, looks like it’s back up, though running a bit slow. I was hoping they’d be back up with Ginger, but no luck. Possibly a few Ginger invites for our trouble?

75. #75 | balu | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:32

Didn’t know how addicted I am already… ;-)

76. #76 | Slimy | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:35

yay it’s back!

77. #77 | Docthib | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:41

Back it is. I especially liked the whiners’ part. Those people probably download for free on Kazaa / eMule / whatever, and complain about "those damn leechers who suck up the bandwith".
Some hints :
– it’s free. So you should say thank you.
– try doing some backups. If your life really depends on netvibes, who is the moron ? The guy who cuts the Netvibes platform, or the netvibes-dependent-never-paid-for-anything-never-did-backups guy ?
– consider switching. Really.
Thanks, Netvibes people. I had a break, I realized my dependency, I am glad it came back. But I had my backup…

78. #78 | Han Solo | January 23rd, 2008 at 20:42

WHAT!?? I thought we were getting ginger today? I had to go through all that pain and got nothing?! :)

79. #79 | Dave | January 23rd, 2008 at 21:09

"If any of these are things that you can’t live without for 4 hours, perhaps you need a much longer break from netvibes and the internet all-together."

Lighten up, dude. Nobody said anything about not being able to live without it.

Having said that, if NV wants to compete with the big boys, you simply can’t afford downtime if you want to be taken seriously. With all the Ginger invites being unleashed in the last couple of days, the demand should have been anticipated and planned for beforehand. Hopefully the lesson has been learned.

Thanks for getting the system back up, folks. I do appreciate it and I want you to be successful!

80. #80 | donnyb | January 23rd, 2008 at 21:35

I had the code to switch to ginger and it was accepted, but I still on the old system.

81. #81 | lighty | January 23rd, 2008 at 21:36

92. #92 | eThikas | January 23rd, 2008 at 23:38

Great service! I looove netvibes.
I think there should be giving out more ginger beta invites, due to the long downtime :D

93. #93 | Max | January 24th, 2008 at 00:31

"I think there should be giving out more ginger beta invites, due to the long downtime :D"

I agree. :)

By the way, 7pm EST, everything works fine now.

113. #113 | Goran | January 24th, 2008 at 07:52

I’ve rediscovered tabs in firefox and I’ll do my best not to refresh my netvibes tab too often. No promises though! :)

114. #114 | Mansoor | January 24th, 2008 at 07:53

Doesn’t work for me :( Still getting "Sorry, we are unable to connect you to Netvibes." error.

115. #115 | Elisabeth | January 24th, 2008 at 07:54

The long-awaited changes must be worth it, before i cheer and clap I must see for myself a fully operational ginger netvibes for my students and I to work on next week, or i’ll have to use another service for their training… which I would be so ginger about as you have been the best so far
keep up the good work!

119. #119 | Martin | January 24th, 2008 at 08:05

Site’s still down. When can we expect it to be available again? A blog update would be great even though I understand that the crew is probably busy right now.

Apart from yesterday’s and today’s outages: you have a killer site! Don’t know how I managed without it before. Great work!

120. #120 | Lilith | January 24th, 2008 at 08:07

We don’t have service in Spain since yesterday!!!!!!!!! It’s a big problem because we have a lot of work links and other of useful stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, we are unable to connect you to Netvibes.

Please try again by reloading the page.

WTF ????

122. #122 | L'Peter | January 24th, 2008 at 08:15

123. #123 | joaopcrodrigues | January 24th, 2008 at 08:18

Hi there, from Portugal here, still can’t connect to netvibes. I’m an IT too, so this is a "good luck", "nice job" and "hurry up" message for those who created and manage netvibes.

joao

124. #124 | Roel | January 24th, 2008 at 08:24

It’s 09.00 here now (Netherlands, GMT +1) and Netvibes is still down. No blaming, just to let you know. Hope you can get everything working again very soon! Netvibes is ‘the internet’ for me. I really really love Netvibes and like Martin said: Don’t know how I managed without it before!

Good luck and many many thanks!

I have got an ERROR since yesterday.

Since yesterday´s server maintance, I have lost lots of my netvibes feeds. I can login but many of my feeds and widgets have dissapeared.

Is anyone with this same problem??

140. #140 | Flubber | January 24th, 2008 at 14:36

@ #141

Yes I have the same problem. Only 4 of about 10 feeds on every tab have survived. What a mess!!!

I hope it is resolved quickly, otherwise I’ll have to switch to the Google RSS services, like google.com/ig and the Google Reader.

141. #141 | Slimy | January 24th, 2008 at 21:12

142. #142 | Seka | January 25th, 2008 at 11:00

It would be nice if the blog or system status was outside of the main NV ecosystem so that when problems occur with the main site there’s still a place to go. As of now it’s all or nothing. :(

Reallt cool that you guys handout another 1000 invites, but it makes the servers go down for everyone who isn’t INSTANTLY there to click and login. As you can see above, this pisses a whole lot of people off… Why not just release the whole thing in one time? Or let me put it this way: when can we ALL enjoy ginger and use netvibes without any problems?

Hope you guys understand what I’m talking about.

Howdy folks !
Here’s a
It is not unusual as women age for their breasts to sag more due to a decrease in the firmness of the breast tissue. If the breasts also begin to shrink after menopause, you should know that this is normal. But may be a viable alternative.
Breast enhancement is now a big industry. HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is widely being used to increase breast size. options are less expensive. This is one way of avoiding putting unnatural chemicals into your body.
Surgery to enhance your breast size will work, but is it worth the risks you’ll face? It is not uncommon for a breast enhancement surgery to result in a build up of scar tissue around the surgery site that can lead to a lot of pressure being put on the implant.
Many other complications, such as wavy breast skin or malformed breasts can also result well after the surgery. The breasts may also become very sensitive and painful. These high risks discourage most women from getting implants.
This is why many women turn to to get more in their breasts.
And in fact, it does work! I work so well, but some how it was hidden for centuries – probably to be to simple. Read more about , and have that breasts that you deserved.!
With very best regards
Steven W.
