Coriander launch: second step
Here it is, the long awaited Netvibes coriander release.
Firstly, thanks for the incredible feedback for the new features we introduced during the first step of the Coriander launch, when we discussed the release of the universal widget API.
We have some cool features that will, we hope, change the way you use netvibes !
A better RSS experience
This is the reasoning behind our the new Netvibes Reader, which turns RSS into Really Sexy Syndication. It makes it easy for users to use multimedia contents from blogs and news feeds, directly within Netvibes. View photos and videos, listen to podcasts, play games and more!

While the new Netvibes Reader is a major new feature, we have a few more for you:
Easy sharing
We’ve listened to those of you who wanted to share their customized Netvibes items with friends and family. You can now instantly share feeds, modules/widgets and Netvibes tabs via e-mail or instant messaging!

Quick start
While we do our best to make the Netvibes experience as easy and accessible as possible, some still find it hard to grasp. That’s why we now introduce some new tools to help newcomers be a part of the Netvibes revolution. Try out our Tour Guide, get help from the Mail Wizard and the Feed Assistant, build your own page from a host of tab templates… Netvibes Coriander makes it even easier to add and customize content!

New search modules
We already introduced the Craigslist search tool in mid-February, and we now have added a Map Comparison Search.

Add the Map Search module to your page :
Even more customization
Click around the Netvibes interface: you will find new personalization features, together with more than 30 new supported languages.

March Madness module
We want to use this opportunity to show you a cool module to follow the March Madness. Try it now :
This new edition of Netvibes will make it even easier for you to (re)mix the Web your way!

Netvibes = Best Website Ever!
#3 | Haf | March 19th, 2007 at 20:52
Wow, this release rocks!
Thank you so much for the great work!
While it is still not as functional as the mail plugin of other websites of such kind, now the pop mail plugin works better than ever for me.
The rest is also pretty cool, I instantly added the map search widget.
Good job!

I love the "show website" feature, it changes my life.
One thing though, we would like to get more and more netvibes themes, so as to be able to change every week, depending on the mood
keep on keep in on
#5 | norti | March 19th, 2007 at 21:04
And the unread counter is left aligned! At last!
#6 | Jeff Staple | March 19th, 2007 at 21:09
As cool as I think the new RSS Reader is (the "view website" is a powerful addition), I still sort of wish Netvibes had a Reader option that was akin to Google Reader (my current reader of choice). Part of the reason I haven’t used Netvibes for the last 6 months or so is because I’m not crazy about having 40 some-odd RSS modules open, particularly if some of them don’t update very often.
I think you’ve got a really slick site going on here, and I subscribe to this blog so I always know about any new features you add, but right now I prefer the RSS service I get from google.
#7 | James | March 19th, 2007 at 21:09
The unread counter should be at the end, so you can click it easily to read all! Noooooooo!
#8 | B. | March 19th, 2007 at 21:15
I love you, Netvibes. Just wanted to let you know.
#9 | MikeH | March 19th, 2007 at 21:21
BUG: How come the unread counter for email doesn’t appear anymore?!
Love the new additions though – well done!!
#10 | Zedix | March 19th, 2007 at 21:24
James > there is an option into General settings to let you choose the unread counter position
#11 | ceedee | March 19th, 2007 at 21:30
I’m confused…
To send updates to my GoogleTalk account, where do I paste the generated link?
Interesting new features to an already wonderfully-useful site.
Couldn’t do without it!
#12 | Alex | March 19th, 2007 at 21:38
Still. No. Windows. Live. Mail.
#13 | Alex R | March 19th, 2007 at 21:43
I love you netvibes.
#14 | Thomas | March 19th, 2007 at 21:45
The first netvibes changed my web-life (i’ve recently experienced that I do not know where to surf anymore without my netvibes).
With the ’show website’, i’m entering in my second revolution. Welcome to my netvibes 2.0 !
Thank you all guys.
Houuaaahh : this word best applies to netvibes.
#15 | Bdy | March 19th, 2007 at 22:32
Excellent update guys!
I love the "Show website" addon as well as the new suggestion button at the top. Movement of windows seems to be more robust than before.
Who can still use Google Reader after this launch?
Keep going with bank accounts and it will be even closer to perfection!
I can’t wait for the Paprika release!

Thanx for the read all red reamining number before the name a of the feed (I can now put long fdd title).
Please add a setting check box for RSS feeds to only display unread items, this way many clicks would be avoided when many rss lies on the page.
You would not have to close them all and open them again when a new item is available. All RSS feed would be opened but only display the unread items.
SeB.

I Love Netvibes but those little thing can be annoying.
Please add a volume to the podcast player.

#20 | Docgalaad | March 19th, 2007 at 23:08
Thanks for those new kicking ass additions.
I noticed though, the unread count has a disgracious white underline instead of none (not hovered state).
I use the "Winter Plain" theme btw.
By far the best theme.
Speaking about themes, i have a request. Could you tell us the statistics about theme usage. Which one is the most used, etc ? I guess the information is on your side.
#21 | Thomas | March 19th, 2007 at 23:11
Very cool !! Already so much stuff since the start ! I love netvibes
But there’nt a "Stared" functionnality for the RSS items
#22 | Thomas | March 20th, 2007 at 00:27
Here is a small typing bug in the french netvibes : ‘partager cet oglet’ instead of ‘partager cet onglet’
#23 | cc | March 20th, 2007 at 00:28
WoW, great stuff again Netvibes. You guys never stop! Love it.
One question for anyone though, maybe I’m extra tired tonight but can someone point out the "view website" feature for me please. I just can’t seem to find it.
Thanks,
cc
#24 | Richard | March 20th, 2007 at 00:47
When reading an RSS feed it is on the top right of the RSS item viewer (near the cross). Big button
#25 | cc | March 20th, 2007 at 01:19
ok Richard, thanks very much.
The reason I couldn’t find it is because I had my feeds set to open directly on the site.
Thanks for your time
cc
#26 | Dexter | March 20th, 2007 at 02:25
The unread counter now shows up between the Favicon and the Title – that’s very unusual and awkward. Please put it back to the end.
#27 | Dexter | March 20th, 2007 at 02:45
Nevermind, found the option to change it back!
#28 | Bruno | March 20th, 2007 at 03:12
I’m posting here just to say congrats!
Netvibes is getting better and better, keep up the good work!

#30 | manuchis | March 20th, 2007 at 04:10
i really love netvibes and all new features, i use it all day and its very necesary in my rutine.
But, i don’t like the align-right footer. I wanna my footer centered Again!!!
je, thanks all of you for this great app .
#31 | sxwayxwey | March 20th, 2007 at 08:38
I like the changes, but I have a strange stripe under the unread red number. Do you also have it? It is kinda annoying.
But it is very nice that I can choose if the number is on the left or right
#32 | fourvin | March 20th, 2007 at 09:01
Chapeau bas !
Nevertheless a small hickup: I confirm #9 MikeH above: my PopMail and Gmail windows have lost their unread counter display, and even though there may be actual unreads, they are not added to the tab unread counter.
Otherwise, no other words than: merci
#33 | Inbal | March 20th, 2007 at 09:10
Can you please release a Coriander Silver theme?
#34 | ullrich | March 20th, 2007 at 10:38
great release, just noticed a bug:
i preiewed the march madness module but canceled its install.
then i tried to open one of my feeds items and it tells me someting like "not available in preview mode" (don’t know the right translation because i get the message localized).
reloading the page fixed it.
great work though! loving netvibes!
#35 | Dr Nick | March 20th, 2007 at 10:48
Awesome update as usual. You guys are legends. I’ve been using Netvibes for over a year now and I can’t imagine the internet without it.

Cette page est devenue, au fil de mises à jour astucieuses et travaillées, un outil indispensable du quotidien. Alors je tenais à vous remercier chaleureusement et à vous adresser tous mes encouragements pour la poursuite de ce fabuleux projet !!
#37 | Cim | March 20th, 2007 at 15:18
Fantastic update, makes Netvibes much better and useful.
One recommendation though, should make it more obvious what you guys mean with "Really sexy syndication" in this blog post. A lot of people seem to miss the big new thing.
#38 | AH | March 20th, 2007 at 16:44
It’s really cool! Thanks for your great work guys!
#39 | nogg3r5 | March 20th, 2007 at 18:16
GAH! Its so broken! PLease bring back the thing wherre you used to display the humber of new items on each module! I cant use Netvibes without it. I use the totals to see which things need reading, emails etc.
#40 | Pilou | March 20th, 2007 at 19:18
The new Netvibe Reader is just oustanding, and it works ! Thanks
#41 | JOJOFACE | March 20th, 2007 at 20:44
Agreed with #30. Have the footer centered again! It looks so awkward now.
Love the new features, especially the option to keep the unread number right aligned.
NEVER forget to include options on Netvibes! Implement a new feature, add options of disable/change it. Everybody likes things different. ^_^
#42 | softeye | March 20th, 2007 at 21:31

#46 | anchedo | March 21st, 2007 at 08:44
Nice update, but I can’t see the icons of my rss-feeds anymore. Please bring them back.
#47 | Benjamin David | March 21st, 2007 at 12:27
I’m not really used to come here but I wanted to say thanks for the last version of Netvibes.
You took it to the next level guys. Awesome !
#48 | phoenixrising | March 21st, 2007 at 13:32
I must say, I love all the implemented stuff in this release — particularly the "Go to Website" part.
Way to go, Netvibes!
#49 | Amar0k | March 21st, 2007 at 22:25
I love the new ‘View Website’ feature, and I’ve become addicted to it strangely fast.
However I’d like to recommend a few features that IMO would greatly improve it:
– A loading indicator. Since the web view takes alot longer to load than the rss one I often find myself wondering if I already clicked the news item I want to see.
– A link to open the item in a new window. (like ‘Link>>’ or title in rss view). I know I can middle-click on the article name on the left, but it feels counter-intuitive.
– I’m not sure about this, but I feel the reader should stay open when I switch tabs. I often wish to check something on another tab while I’m in the process of reading an article on the reader, and don’t, because I know I’ll have to find the right article again and scroll to resume reading.
I hope I don’t sound too pedantic here. These are just some suggestions to an already amazing service.
Thank You!

Just a sugesstion for localized versions:
I think it would be better if we would be able to see the localized version of other countries like France http://www.netvibes.com/?lang=fr... without having to login.
I live in North America and I want to be able to see the Franch version without having to login.
Thank You

Bug: The view website button in the RSS button does not work with the New York Times feed.
#52 | Howard Owens | March 25th, 2007 at 05:58
Ever since the upgarde, my RSS feeds get hung up on UPDATE repeatedly, forever … reloading the site sometimes helps, but it’s a much slower download. I’m starting to get significantly frustrated.
#53 | gerione | March 25th, 2007 at 22:38
Netvibes is now one of the best sites ever.
Help us to develop another great one:

#54 | moe | March 26th, 2007 at 12:12
you guys do sooo cool stuff! netvibes IS "web2.0"
#55 | Scott | March 27th, 2007 at 03:24
I wish you’d "store" old RSS entries. (Or maybe I’m missing the feature.) Some of my feeds only push forward 10-15 items at a time, and I read them too slowly to read all the entries before they get bumped off the main feed. Google Reader and some others will store old entries until you trash them.
#56 | Karl Sultana | March 30th, 2007 at 13:34
Super cool stuff. It may take a while to learn them but really useful. Makes everything faster, easier and more fun to use! . Anyone reading this: Best one – netvibes
#57 | Jeff Staple | April 3rd, 2007 at 08:14
I feel I should elaborate a little on my previous comment. Especially after reading Scott’s a few posters up.
Having played with Netvibes again since the Coriander update, I’m thoroughly convinced that you guys are offering the best startpage on the net. The shear breadth of modules alone makes Netvibes worthwhile, not to mention the seamless functionality of tabs and drag-and-drop (something even Google IG hasn’t mastered). However, even as a Netvibes fan, I still think the RSS features could be improved.
In my mind, there are 3 factors that make Google Reader superior from a purely RSS standpoint: (1) uncluttered interface, (2) storage of older RSS news entries (the point Scott was driving at), and (3) the ability to read feed entries in the order they were posted.
On the first point, right now on my Netvibes page I have a tab each devoted to blogs and general news feeds. Quite a few of these (mostly blogs) update very infrequently, which when dealing with rss modules makes it hard for me to justify keeping them on my page (even if they are feeds I really care about). Even if I collapse those that don’t update much, these two tabs still end up looking rather cluttered. On GR though, I can hide my list of feeds in folders and only see those entries that have been updated. And when I’m done navigating my list of new feeds, the read feeds disappear entirely from the page. If there’s nothing new in a particular feed, I don’t want it cluttering up my screen, y’know?
Of more importance though is the lack of archiving of older feed entries. Conveniently enough, I went I’ve been away from a computer for a week both when I used Netvibes for RSS and now that I use GR. When I returned while using Netvibes, other than the most recently updated feed entries, I had to physically navigate each site to see what I missed while I was gone. Heck, when I read Kotaku on Netvibes, I could hardly go half a day before I’d be forced to go the the site itself to see the updates. Doesn’t that defeat the point of RSS? GR on the other hand, keeps an ongoing list of the updates that I can come to and sort through whenever I’m back near a computer. Overall the far superior experience for the power RSS user.
My final point is a purely personal preference, but I like the option to read my feeds in the order they were written.
I’m not sure whether or not I’m alone on this opinion, but I personally would love to see Netvibes at least offer a more powerful RSS module more akin to Google’s Reader. It could even take up a whole tab, a la Meebo, if needed.
Again, I think you guys are offering a great service here, but it just isn’t worth it for me to switch from GR currently since I use Netvibes predominantly for RSS.
