Cinnamon: A New Netvibes, A Better Netvibes [update]

Netvibes Cinnamon colors

As you may already know, the Netvibes that you use everyday has changed thanks to our new release, Cinnamon. Cinnamon is a three-month release cycle, where you will see new features and upgrades throughout that time. (Don’t forget to check back for the latest info.) This means that we will be releasing more in the coming days and weeks.

One of the main goals of this new version is to implement the features and correct the bugs you’ve submitted. For one year now, Netvibes has served to change and improve our digital lives. One year has been enough time to figure out what should be the next step for Netvibes. Cinnamon is the transition release to the real Netvibes 2.0.

The first important thing we should say is that we need your immediate feedback on bugs. Older netvibers know that we always spend time after the release to fix bugs. If you experience a bug, just send us a bug report, with a screen copy and a precise explanation. Our entire tech team is working hard to correct the bugs you’ve submitted. I’d also like to thank the many people that have already helped us in this process.

And now let’s take a look at what’s new in Cinnamon.

A NEW NETVIBES

New “settings” panel

At last we have a real configuration panel. We have included all the latest settings in a more user-friendly interface, but we have also added some new features: better language support (community translated, if you’d to help out please contact us), and local support. With your help, we will develop a localized Netvibes page for each country.

New design and color themes

The overall design has been improved and we’ve also added color-based themes. You have now have the choice to keep the classic skin or to choose from our “tonic” set of themes. This is only the beginning of your personalized Netvibes design–we’ll be releasing more features soon. By the way, if you are a designer and have ideas for skins, please get in touch with us.

New Netvibes Digital Life Assistant

Making your digital life better is our motto. This is why we introduced the web search, video search, and blog search. The idea is simple: you type a keyword and, in one click, you can compare most services. This is just the beginning as more modules and a wider choice of modules will be arriving shortly. Any suggestions? Please provide us with your feedback and we will integrate your favorite services.

Do you have any “MySpace” friends? You can now interact with them via Netvibes! The MySpace module has everything you dreamed of– even the music player (and a magic drag & drop, details to come).

New content localization

Forty languages are on their way, translated by the Netvibes community. Want to have Netvibes in your language and in your country? Contact us. You can even see the live status of the translation of any language. Yesterday, thanks two netvibers, the Korean and Spanish translations were finally completed!

A BETTER NETVIBES

Side bar reorganization

The side bar is now organized in a better way with groups of modules, and a new feed directory will be arriving shortly. And as you can see, the side bar keeps track of your latest changes and is kept exactly how you left it. We also have upgraded the side bar with better category organization.

Better performance

Cinnamon dramatically improves user performance. We will activate our “super boost” feature in the coming days to make loading of your start page even faster.

Browser compatibility

We now have better support for IE, Opera, Safari, and Firefox. Netvibes wants to give you the best user experience no matter what browser you’re using.

Within the next few days, we’ll be providing more details on the new features and upgrades.

Enjoy!

Can you put the feed hyperlinks back the way they were? Now that they run to the end of each feed box there is no white space where you can click without activating something. Really bad usability, only the words need to be hyperlinked not the whole span!

  2. #2 | [DoodoM] | October 1st, 2006 at 20:10

When you change the color of a block it doesn’t change when you select a different color theme and you have to change their colors individually.

In other words, it would be great for the blocks to have a default color.

  3. #3 | Sinaptik | October 1st, 2006 at 20:13

    Great updates !
Only one request : correct the Calendar bugs with 30boxes, I’m waiting it for months. :(

    Thank you.

  4. #4 | monser | October 1st, 2006 at 20:13

    I LOVE NETVIBES !!!

  5. #5 | JOJOFACE | October 1st, 2006 at 20:14

@User(first comment): I like it. Perhaps it could be an option.

  6. #6 | ignazio | October 1st, 2006 at 20:19

    Nice work.

  7. #7 | Martyn | October 1st, 2006 at 20:29

    No question………

    N E T V I B E S R O C K S!!!

    Can’t wait for more….

One request…. addition of a web page module allowing the manipulation of the page to show only the area required… a la protopage.

    Keep up the great work!

  8. #8 | User | October 1st, 2006 at 20:30

Jojoface, I see how some could like it, but I use Netvibes all the time and have loads of feeds in it and now everywhere you click results in an action which isn’t much fun when just trying to bring the window to the front.
I guess I may get used to it in time but it smacks of bad usability to me.

  9. #9 | JOJOFACE | October 1st, 2006 at 20:55

In order to scroll I usually just click the far FAR left. It’s pretty safe. :)

  10. #10 | Tariq KRIM | October 1st, 2006 at 20:56

    hi,
thanks, the classic skin bring old behaviors if you like the old skin ( I switched to the tonic green )

for the 30 boxes bug ? sorry to hear that, if you can feedback us this today, I’ll have someone correct this ! tell us precisly, help us and we can correct, sometime we don’t correct bugs because we don’t manage to replicate them !

our support now handle things very well thanks to François.

don’t forget, cinamon release is for the next 3 months (you see the starting features now, more to come) and as usual, we take your feedback to build this release. The big thing is that we correct serious bugs and issues first, and then we can discuss design options. The good news with the settings, is that we can put a lots of options for power users.

thanks for your feedback and don’t forget to digg our story on the front page ! ;)

  11. #11 | zain | October 1st, 2006 at 21:09

Hm… I don’t notice anything really different. The new skins are too bright imo, so I switched back to the classic skin immediately. About the only different thing is (as the first poster mentioned)… the RSS reader links now span the whole box rather than just the words. I have to agree… while the yellow highlighting is a nice touch, its annoying that clicking on the whitespace brings up that RSS feed entry.

As far as I’m concerned, nothing has changed, but that isnt necessarily a bad thing. The reason I use netvibes is because it rocks already. keep up the good work.

  12. #12 | OG-K | October 1st, 2006 at 21:21

Don’t notice anything different? I do!

I love how you don’t have to click on the specific link text now.. the whole link row will do. That makes the world of a difference for me on a widescreen.

I am looking forward to a DARK theme. I want a black background with light grey text.. or the option to provide my own colors.

But all in all, SLICK SUFF!

  13. #13 | Jeff Staple | October 1st, 2006 at 21:29

I don’t know if this is possible, but I’d love it if Netvibes could create a MySpace module that updated whenever "I" (meaning any netvibes user) receive a new comment, message, or any updates I’m notified about when I log into MySpace. I love the current module, but a more personalized one would be nice too.

  14. #14 | Ashish | October 1st, 2006 at 21:39

Excuse me for whining, but why are my webnotes in a default Yellow color, as again the off-white I had earlier.

  15. #15 | nick | October 2nd, 2006 at 00:27

the myspace module is nice but it doesn’t update comments as they happen.

  16. #16 | ccc | October 2nd, 2006 at 00:42

congratulations netvibes, loving it even more than before.
Right now I have to complaints or bugs to report, but I second the option for a dark background. (it’s easier on these old eyes)
Thanks again and keep up the good work.
    cc

  17. #17 | cc | October 2nd, 2006 at 00:46

That should read ‘NO complaints’ in above post . Sorry ’bout that. See what I mean about these old eyes!!!

One big problem with the Meebo module that’s been there ever since it first appeard on Netvibes: Every time you navigate to one of the other tabs and back to Meebo again, all the conversations are shown from the top, and you have to scroll them down to the ende. That is very frustrating.

Also: The sound notification doesn’t seem to work, so you never know when you get a new message. That’s a big problem!

  19. #19 | Tariq KRIM | October 2nd, 2006 at 02:34

have you guys tried this ? eco.netvibes.com/tools/

  20. #20 | Inbal | October 2nd, 2006 at 08:36

"When you change the color of a block it doesn’t change when you select a different color theme and you have to change their colors individually. In other words, it would be great for the blocks to have a default color." (DoodoM) — I disagree. Some of my tabs are organized by the blocks colour, like my News tab – every newspaper has a colour that I can remember and find easier. A total theme take-over will mess that up for me.

"I am looking forward to a DARK theme. I want a black background with light grey text.. or the option to provide my own colors." (OG-K) — Totally! Regarding the previous issue, it would be great for me to have a black-grey-white theme and colourful blocks, that’s why I also support more colour choice on the blocks.

  21. #21 | Paul | October 2nd, 2006 at 10:04

@ Tariq: I would love to use the Add2Netvibes Firefox extension, but I’m using Firefox 2.0 RC, and the extension seems to be incompatible with that version :-(
Will there be an update to the extendion soon?

P.S. The ‘new’ Netvibes is great!

  22. #22 | Tariq KRIM | October 2nd, 2006 at 10:45

sure we can do it ! I’ll ask my team

  23. #23 | AnA-l | October 2nd, 2006 at 11:38

ok, using netvibes for a bit more than a year, still loving it.

    Inbal, i think it’s coming ;)

And dunno if you change anything, but that feed wasn’t working for some months, is now back !

    http://www.phoenixjp.net/news/se...

thank you if you changed something :)

  24. #24 | Nico C. | October 2nd, 2006 at 12:01

    Great job as always !

Skins are not much differents .. but I’m sure more will come very soon.

I like much the new search box, the new setting layout (not much settings yet.. but at least well ordered now).

    Merci encore !

  25. #25 | Romain Péchard | October 2nd, 2006 at 12:10

You make it greater every day. Congrats Tariq and the Netvibes Team !

  26. #26 | AnA-l | October 2nd, 2006 at 12:26

Ok guys, forget what i said, this feed isn’t working with netvibes,
but it works very well insode my firefox, i think it may be the website hoster which is blocking netvibes.

    http://www.phoenixjp.net/news/se...

so is netvibes aggressive with website ?

  27. #27 | Marina making pictures | October 2nd, 2006 at 12:32

    I like the new layout.
The improvements make the using of features to a simple fun.

The new settings menu is my favorite improvement.

  28. #28 | Raphael | October 2nd, 2006 at 14:55

I’m a linux user with kubuntu, I’m using konqueror as naviguator. Since the update it just don’t load. It stay on the loading and do nothing.

  29. #29 | Nathan Friedly | October 2nd, 2006 at 15:10

    the line
"(community translated, if you’d to help out please contact us)"
seems to have lost a bit in translation. like the word "like."

  30. #30 | Dave | October 2nd, 2006 at 15:31

I have about 6 tabs set on my page, and many of the RSS feeds on the tabs no longer load unless I specifically select that tab.

  31. #31 | mike arauz | October 2nd, 2006 at 15:51

why not make the bug report part of the basic netvibes page? maybe a link in the upper right hand corner next to the username? just a little ajax pop-up to quickly submit a bug report? make it easy for us, and we’ll be happy to help out.

keep up the great work. thanks.

  32. #32 | Dean | October 2nd, 2006 at 16:56

Seems like the close button (X) in the upper-right corner of the feed pages is gone! The only way I can get the window to go away, so I can see my other feeds, is by clicking on the feed tab at the very top. Wud up wit dat? (I’m using Firefox 1.5.0.7)

  33. #33 | Ron | October 2nd, 2006 at 17:55

Well hello there, you just made another loyal user! I’m loving my netvibes. It’s been 3 days since im using it, and I feel I cant live without it anymore. One thing I’m a bit bothered about though, slowness! I’m having a pretty slow loading time, not sure if its part of the upgrade and the works, but hopefully you’ll superboost it soon! hehe thanks

    ron

  34. #34 | jmor | October 3rd, 2006 at 11:58

Hi everybody. Can you explain me why Wikipedia disappears from "Web search" ? I suppose a "Business Model" reason underneath that ? Am I right ? thanks a lot …

  35. #35 | Brian | October 3rd, 2006 at 17:15

It rocks. apart from the new search box, which I’ve replaced with the "classic" one. No wikipedia button! And a link to Snap.com (a search engine which mixes sponsored results and proper search results in a very deceptive way). No thanks!

  36. #36 | Brian | October 3rd, 2006 at 17:17

BTW is there a way to search my feeds? Sometimes I read a good story and have to hunt for it a few days later. It’d be great if there was a serch box for this.

  37. #37 | turbotape | October 3rd, 2006 at 17:26

What’s up with the Norwegian translation? For "Themes" the word "Nettbunad" is used, which translates to "Web-national costume" which doesn’t make sense.

What’s even worse, is that even if I switch to English language, next time I start Netvibes, it’s in Norwegian again.

  38. #38 | fluxam | October 3rd, 2006 at 19:24

The floatover summaries of underlying lines finally work in Gecko browsers — yay! But I had to remove the Meebo module tab because that made the front page fail to load all items.
    I eagerly await dark themes.

  39. #39 | grawity | October 3rd, 2006 at 20:34

    fluxam:
    > I eagerly await dark themes.
    Me too.

  40. #40 | Tariq KRIM | October 4th, 2006 at 00:59

konqueror works again sorry for the bugs, wikipedia is in the classic search and a new wikipedia module is on his way. darks skins also, my team has some ideas for that.

we are coming with some new stuff soon :)

  41. #41 | Derek Giromini | October 4th, 2006 at 17:02

I have only one complaint. The Writely module does not appear to work. I am using Firefox 1.5.0.6 on Fedora Core 5 Linux (2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp).

  42. #42 | jeff | October 4th, 2006 at 17:11

After the recent announcement of Pageflakes v2 with group tabs and public tabs, are you planning on implementing anything like that? I think it would be a great addition.

  43. #43 | Phil | October 4th, 2006 at 17:18

This may already be possible, but if it is, I can’t see, which is a problem itself. I want to entirely different sets of bookmarks – one for work, one for play, on two different pages. Everytime I try however, it’s exactly the same bookmark list that I’m editing.

This seems such a basic requirement I can’t believe that it’s not available. OR … it is available and I can’t find how to do it!

  44. #44 | Escaper | October 4th, 2006 at 21:30

Right Phil, that’s what I also want

  45. #45 | Chris | October 5th, 2006 at 15:05

I agree with Phil about the bookmarks issue. I too need different sets of bookmarks for different activities such as work and play. Additionally I second Derek’s comment because I also been having difficulty with the Writely module. Regardless of these things however I think Netvibes rocks! I have wished for a digital life manager for a long time and Netvibes delivers!

  46. #46 | Martyn | October 5th, 2006 at 17:30

Anyone know how to get snippets of code onto netvibes…….. i.e. Google gadgets???

    Thanks

  47. #47 | Serop | October 5th, 2006 at 19:08

Guys, do you think you need a forum for module developers and for features discussions?! ;)

  48. #48 | Escaper | October 5th, 2006 at 19:12

    YES :)

  49. #49 | Ralesk | October 6th, 2006 at 00:25

Thanks for fixing Konqueror support so fast! :D You guys are great.

  50. #50 | Jean | October 6th, 2006 at 08:24

I have to try the theme, and I lost my colonns on Netvibes.

Where I can spécify that I want 3 colonnes ?

  51. #51 | Inbal | October 6th, 2006 at 15:13

"Guys, do you think you need a forum for module developers and for features discussions?! ;) " (Serop)
    — But it’s so wonderfully chaotic as it is!

    Jean,
It’s on the Tab Options that open by clicking the arrow on the open tab.

  52. #52 | Serop | October 6th, 2006 at 19:22

2 Inbal: as you wish :) Ok, then keep answering stupid questions over and over again, LOL ;)

  53. #53 | Pountzas Th. | October 7th, 2006 at 01:15

The new release has solved some bugs & problems. I think that we will see more searches, languages, themes soon!

Also, I want to use dropdown menu in my submitted modules, but when the user selects a link he navigates out of netvibes.com
I think it would be very usefull.

    Thanks,

    Pountzas Th.
    Patras, Greece

Why my Netvibes come in one columns?

  55. #55 | Motivr | October 8th, 2006 at 17:26

"Why my Netvibes come in one columns?"
Have you tried to change the number of columns by clicking a little triangle shaped arrow next to tab title?

  56. #56 | atomic1fire | October 9th, 2006 at 05:11

will netvibes come as a basic selection in Firefox
since my google and my yahoo and 1 other web based one is

Hey I wrote to your mail as well, don’t know if it arrived.
As new as it is, chinese yatrack.cn was quick enough to totally copy it.
    Including some new looks!

I took some screens, they even copied the about us page!

  59. #59 | spag | October 9th, 2006 at 15:36

    great job!

a nice little option would be if in the "Nb of items" in an rss module i could select to show only the unread articles.

  60. #60 | Steve | October 9th, 2006 at 23:40

Also, it would be nice to be able to set the direction of the RSS feed. I have a few feeds that start with the earliest and end with the latest. I would like all of my RSS feeds to display the same (newest on top).

  61. #61 | kamisalami | October 10th, 2006 at 11:36

fantastic… really…. but with all those great features i can still not do such a simple thing as exporting my bookmarks… Please fix this little thing and you have a very happy netvibes user (and probably a lot of them, judging by the complains i have seen about this.)

    I do LOVE netvibes however…

    Remco.

  62. #62 | Jean | October 11th, 2006 at 11:35

ok – now that google has integrated writely and spreedsheets … what’s going on with the writely module? it was so useful!!

  63. #63 | xk_liber | October 11th, 2006 at 15:20

I use netvibes since 1 year now and it’s great..

This is a cool update but… as I’ve just lost my password, your retrieving password page doesn’t work at all (in order to make a new one) and I’m now in trouble ’cause I can’t get some important data which were put in my netvibes account.. :(

I’ve already wrote 2 mails but still no answers… :(

    Bien cordialement,

I think the main step taht netvibs have to pass, is to be surf-able threw SmartPhones.
I like NetVibes, but i can’t use it duroing 8 hours a day, cause i’ve got meetings.
    We all need a smart-netvibes version !

  68. #68 | Opo | October 13th, 2006 at 14:41

    "VISUAL BOOKMARKS"
I would like to save links to videos with a little pic from video to remember the video. (it works better than tags for me…)

I would have my best goals video page, my best friends video page, best music …

I would like to link to Google, YouTube and any other web or even my own pc video source.

How can I do it, without copying jpg and url my self?

Could you create a module ad hoc?

    thanks

I love netvibes so much that I want to buy netvibes tshirts and such! When will they be available?

  71. #71 | Kat | October 16th, 2006 at 20:34

Any idea why netvibes keeps "forgetting" changes I make to my page when it refreshes? Ever since the cinnamon update, feeds get marked as unread, To Do items disappear, item titles revert, etc. Extremely irritating. I’m using Firefox version 1.5.0.7 on a Thinkpad.

  72. #72 | Josh | October 16th, 2006 at 23:40

I love the new Netvibes, but I would like to see Zohowriter and other Zoho office applications supported by Netvibes.

  73. #73 | Philippe Lebrun | October 17th, 2006 at 09:09

Writely doesn’t seem to work any more. Any ideas?

  74. #74 | Jean | October 17th, 2006 at 16:47

Writely doesn’t work because Google integrated this service in his brand new Googl doc and spredsheets. Anyhow, I would be very interested if someone form Netvibes or not develop another similar module for Google Docs

  75. #75 | Tariq KRIM | October 17th, 2006 at 19:45

google docs and spreadsheeets on his way

  76. #76 | Jean | October 18th, 2006 at 00:28

    well done Tariq!

  77. #77 | atomic1fire | October 18th, 2006 at 01:19

    how is google a he?

  78. #78 | Brian | October 19th, 2006 at 03:06

    Tariq

Thanks for all of the hard work at Netvibes…I was looking at Pageflakes today and noticed a feature that I could really use in Netvibes…the ability to save a RSS feed item to read later. Any talk of adding such a feature. I currently tag feed items to delicious as "readlater" and then subscribe to that feed in Netvibes. A more integrated solution would be appreciated.

    Thanks

it could be cool to be able to duplicate a module. for example long time ago i found a simple web browser module (simpler than bitty, without _any_ toolbars) and now i want some more but i cant find it anymore on eco.

btw, anyone knows where can i find such module?

  82. #82 | waruwaru | October 23rd, 2006 at 20:22

On IE 6, Win XP. I have not seen the "Loading…" thing work at all. That alone defeats how I use Netvibes. It makes the "Read All" button useless. If I just want to see headings only, I can just read them in the main page. If I have to click on something to see rest of the feed, or this is not changed soon, I am definitely switching to something else.

  83. #83 | Al | October 24th, 2006 at 20:02

Puh-lease, pull back the "Loading.." thing. It’s mixing entries, NOT-loading aka freezing, confusing and slowing me down, and rendering almost useless the "read all" feature. I cannot predict when it’ll do each, nor imagine how it could be a good idea, whenever it works.

    Beggars can’t be.. But, y’know, it’s a bit annoying. (And I said puh-lease..)

    Thanks for everty(other)thing!

I second what Al says. Some of my RSS feeds get confused (entries mixed), some load after the word "Loading", others just freeze.

That, and providing a way for the full post to be rendered in the sidebar (rather than another tab or window) are what it takes for this to become a true killer app. I hate having to open windows or tabs just to read blog posts when they don’t put the entire post in the feed itself.

Where is the "Wikipedia Search" module? Not the classic web search, the standalone module. It was deleted?

I love how you don’t have to click on the specific link text now.. the whole link row will do. That makes the world of a difference for me on a widescreen.

Why my Netvibes come in one columns?"
Have you tried to change the number of columns by clicking a little triangle shaped arrow next to tab title?
